Smitten Gadhafi? Rebels find Condoleezza Rice photo book

We'd long heard that Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi admired former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. In 2007, he called her "Leeza ... my darling black African woman" whom he loved "very much."

Just words? Perhaps. Or maybe, as a discovery this week suggests, he really was quite impressed.

Rebels ransacking his Bab al-Aziziya compound in Tripoli found a photo album of Rice, The New York Times reports.

A description of the album, from the Times:

"There she is, in one (picture), smiling off to the side, her flip-do accented perfectly for the camera. And there she is in another, smiling next to you-know-who during that visit to Tripoli. He is wearing a flowing white robe with purple sash and Africa pin; she looks more businesslike in a gray pinstripe suit with white pearls, her flip-do having given way to a page-boy bob."

Rice was with the Bush administration when the United States restored relations with Libya in 2005, after Gadhafi decided to abandon his pursuit of weapons of mass destruction, renounce terrorism and compensate victims of a 1986 disco bombing in Berlin and the 1988 Pan Am 103 bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland.

In a 2007 interview with Al Jazeera, Gadhafi said this about Rice:

"I support my darling, black African woman. ... I admire and am very proud of the way she leans back and gives orders to the Arab leaders. ... I love her very much. I admire her, and I'm proud of her because she's a black woman of African origin."

Gadhafi met with Rice the next year, when Rice made the first visit by a U.S. secretary of state to Libya in more than 50 years. CNN's Elise Labott reported on their meeting in a reception room at Gadhafi’s Tripoli compound:

"Gadhafi, wearing a white robe and a black fez but not his trademark dark sunglasses, shook the hands of the male members of Rice's staff but not Rice, instead offering the traditional greeting of his hand over his heart for her," Labott reported in her piece, noting that Muslim men are prohibited from shaking hands with women to whom they are not related.

Rice's office, when reached by CNN on Thursday for reaction to the photo album, said she'd reserve comment until the release of her book on November 1.

Fouad Ajami, a Middle East expert, senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and an outspoken critic of Gadhafi, provided some context regarding why Gadhafi would stress Rice's African roots and comment on her dealings with Arab leaders.

"He ... fancied himself at one point as something of an African," Ajami told CNN's Joe Johns on Thursday. "He basically said at one point that Libya is an African country, (that) it has nothing to do with the Arabs. And he dubbed himself king of the kings of Africa, and he turned his back on the Arabs."

Ajami said he wouldn't think Rice is thrilled.

"Secretary Rice is an esteemed colleague ... at Hoover and something of a friend, so I don't think she's flattered by this," Ajami told Johns on "The Situation Room."

so kind of hypocritical of how under Bush at was a-ok for Conde to go cozy up and visit Gadhafi and play nice like he was our great friend and ally but now Obama is damned if does something to intervene and damned if he doesn't. If Obama should of acted well then why didn't Bush deal with this clown?

Gadhafi has heart. He is a dictator who ruled the unruly. The US can't seem to get a grip on the mid east. When the dictators go, terrorism flows. Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face. I can't believe I'm the only one that sees this. Has the media got all of you spell bound? Mesmerized? Believe what you read?

Hoofleau, I appreciate your loyalty! I will sacrifice a small child in your honor tonight. But it's actually a bunch of disloyal rebel rats who are unseating me, not the US.

"controlling the mob" has been the excuse for every tyrant in history, using stability as an excuse for cruelty. The people of Libya are, unlike Afghanistan, better educated with a better infrastructure and more of an idea of a state. They should be able to organize themselves

When I take over, I'll put a stop to all this unruliness. Death camps and extermination schedules for people I don't agree with, and that's everyone who isn't a teabaghead. People in America should all have the same opinion, or be killed. One party is enough for anyone, and all cars will be painted black. One tv channel is enough, and it will be FOX.

I know arent people media brainwashed nowdays?Anything they hear they believe and anything the government and news tells them is important or is the big generational fad they accept. We are sock puppets being controled and manipulated by the wealthy few,and whats worse is that instead of uprising and fighting for our rights as human beings we go along with the flow of the way the powers that be say things should go.If anyone needs an uprising to oust government leadership its the U.S. of A.The United States knows that it is in trouble and going down financially so its using the power of military, central intelligence and media to influence the coup de tat' uprising we see in the middle east in order to open that entire region up to our markets. What the obama camp and other fools dont realize is that the tyrant governments being over thrown in the mid east will be replaced by 100 years of extremist bloodshed and anti western sentiment just like Iraq.By aiding the Shiite majority in taking over Arab regimes we are opening more doors for Al Qaida and other terrorists to crawl through.

IWell you know that the those ethnic people that occupy Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt are not it's original inhabitants. The great majority of the people you see in this region are Arabs. Which basically mean Europeans that migrated across the mediterrainean sea thousand of years ago and interbred with Black Africans. These Arab people who past themselves off into different tribe like the Moors, and descendants of the ancient Phonecians are nothing less than a mix race people. This is how the Europeans conquered the North of Africa. They came with Islam and their weapons and gave the Blacks a choose, to either convert to islam or die by the sword . Those who converted were breeded out of their blackness and those who did not were either slaughter or push south of the sahara. And the Europeans along with their mixed race invention took the north- Morocco, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia. So why is so much of a surprise for Ghadafi or any other mix race person who shares the blood with oppressed black people to return their love for them

The main thing wrong with your stupid comment is that black people are about 300% smarter than you think they are. You act as if they were flocks of sheep waiting to be shorn. Buy a used car from one sometime and tell me who got fleeced, my man? Arabs were around a long time before Islam, and your weird theories about race seem schizophrenic.

AWESOME !!!!! Brother Gadhafi understood real beauty and supported African countries attempting to throw off the yoke of Western colonial powers. A benevolent dictator is more useful than a trumped up, supposedly democracy perpetrated on poor and middle class people all over the world.

Yes, because in a democracy, you can't just have the secret police bring you a woman all handcuffed and hogtied. You have to pay her, or be nice to her, or some such nonsense. Being a dictator is cool!

Could this be the reason why the Europeans and America moved so quick on Ghadafi, because he was enabling South Saharan Africa to stand on their own two feet. Establishing a banking systems for the poor nation of Sub-Saharan Africa, were they can go to borrow money and not have to worry about the high interest rates charge by the IMF. This along with the Chinese moving into many Black African Nations helping them to develope and bringing them into the world economical game plan. Maybe the Blacks with the help of Ghadafi were moving to fast for the West. This is not what they plan when the colonialist left them in a shamble, milked and bleeding decades ago. They never intended for Africa to recover from the beat down. So now they've establish a partnership with the elite ( those mentally conditioned and indoctrinated in the ways and wills of the west) of the Arab world. whispering in their ear, " look those blacks are moving up kind of quick, and Ghadafi is assisting while you guys are at a standstill. You've better take him out before those blacks in Sub- Saharan Africa regain their strenght and come to regain their northern territory"

Its makes me shameful to see a good man like Ghadafi go down when the first Black American President is in the White House leading these pack of wolves. Could this be why they found it so timely to place a Black man in the White House. Now that the U.S. economical stuation is in shambles, and they see it needing that their faces is not seen to often in mischief, so here comes obama to do their dirty work

Yeah, it was a plot all right. Forty years ago, they faked a birth certificate so Obama would be in place to watch smiling as rebels unseated Gadhafy with the help of UN air cover. Then the Martians used an invisibility shield to cover up all the good stuff Gadhafy was doing, and had the CIA sneak that whackbook into his bedroom, just in time for the Reptile Men to come out of the ground and take over. But don't worry, Dick Cheney will be back to save you, and he'll have awesome sparkly vampire powers now that he's Undead.

You are right in one way; Ghadafy had more complexity than the average stupid dictator and could have been a positive force in this world. He took control of Libya with a lot of public support, and he could have been a great man on the world stage if he hadn't thought so small.
