Amtrak train derails in Nebraska

An Amtrak train with 178 people on board derailed Friday in southwestern Nebraska, the rail service said.

A few passengers were hospitalized, but there were no reports of life-threatening injuries, Amtrak said in a statement.

An agricultural vehicle on the tracks caused the derailment just before 9 a.m. near the town of Benkelman, in the southwestern part of Nebraska, near the Kansas and Colorado state lines.

    I used to live in that area I didn't know Amtrac used those tracks But this isn't the first time this sort of accident has happened. It's usually caused by the vehiicle driver not payiing any attention and there are no crossarms, just lights and in some cases on private property, not even that.

    Last week-end, I was visiting a friend in Chehalis, Washington. I saw an Amtrak train fly through the town so fast, I could hardly believe it. My friend told me they always go extremely fast through town. Where I live, trains slow down when approaching a city. It's surely a wonder there aren't MORE accidents.

    i called utu trainman last night and he said that the "car" / "vehicle" that cnn is talking about actually turned out to be a matchbox car...
    .
    some kid was playing on the track and left his matchbox car on it.

    The train had difficulty negotiating Nebeaska's mountain passes. Some of those hills are near 50' high.
