Rebels give loyalist towns until Saturday for surrender

The head of Libya's interim council set a Saturday deadline for remaining loyalist towns to surrender or face fierce military battles.

Mustafa Abdul Jalil, head of the National Transitional Council, told reporters Tuesday that the rebels are in negotiations with tribal elders and hope that by the end of the Eid holidays, loyalists will surrender in places like Sirte, Moammar Gadhafi's hometown.

Jalil said the rebels hope to "avoid more bloodshed and to avoid more destruction and damage."

But in the end," he said, "it might have to be decided militarily. I hope this will not be the case."

As fighting continued for the last bastions of Gadhafi's grip, the strongman's whereabouts still were unknown. Members of his family, including Gadhafi's wife Safia, two sons - Moahamed and Hannibal - and daughter Aisha escaped to Algeria.

Mourad Benmehidi, Algeria's ambassador to the United Nations, said his nation allowed them to enter on "humanitarian grounds."

Unlike Libya's other neighbors, Algeria has not recognized the authority of the National Transitional Council and that nation's authoritarian government has much to fear with Arab revolutions so close to home.

Jalil said Tuesday that the rebels would ask Algeria to extradite members of the Gadhafi family back to Libya. He also said that once Libyan liberation was complete, the country would set up courts to hear people's complaints against the Gadhafi regime.

Rebel fighters forged ahead Tuesday toward Sirte, situated along the Mediterranean coast between the capital, Tripoli, and the opposition nerve center of Benghazi.

How nice of Mustafa Abdul Jalil to give the residents of Sirte until Saturday to surrender unconditionally. Either way, there will be a bloodbath there, punishing the people for suppoting Qadaffy. Now Libya's sovereignity will be completely out the window!!!

I feel sorry for Gadafi's family. The USA has lost a true friend. Us Democrats were hoping he would come to the USA with his billions so he could help us fund our welfare programs. I really don't want to work and Obama programs was my goal on achieving this.

I have no idea why that character popped into my head recently, after having not seen that show for at least 35 years. Strange how the human brain works. So, naturally I had to adopt it as my new screen name.

I wonder if NATO will standby and watch as the rebels attempt to slaughter these tribes for not surrendering to them unconditionally? Just because they're loyalists doesn't make them any less of a civilian and that's who nato is there to protect right? Nato backed rebels vs. Loyalist tribesman and whatever remaining gadhafi forces there are, not a fair fight at all.

And now begins the Taliban and Al Qaeda slaughter. Gadhafi needed to go yes but this was not the group the US and NATO should've been backing-huge mistake. This band of thugs has been aligned with the taliban and al qaeda from the get go not to mention the muslim brotherhood, now within ten years we'll have to invade another country to root out the terrorist networks they will build with all that oil money they will soon have. This will go down as one of the biggest blunders in American foreign policy ever.

NATO and the US need to make it explicitly clear to the transitional government that we will not sit back and watch the wholesale slaughter of people just because they were on the other side.

All that the U.S. and NATO cares about is good PR tim, not the welfare of Libyan civilians. So the NTC can go on slaughtering tens of thousands of civilians as long as the public doesn't know about it!!! Moreover, Barack Obama right now couldn't be more pleased as what happened in Libya is another blow to Islam!
