Tropical Storm Katia forecast to become major hurricane

[Updated at 11:12 p.m. ET] Tropical Storm Katia was strengthening in the Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday and could become a hurricane on Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center said.

In its 11 p.m. ET advisory, the hurricane center said Katia has maximum sustained winds of 60 mph - up from 45 mph 12 hours earlier. The storm was in the open Atlantic about 1,700 miles east-southeast of the Caribbean Sea's Leeward Islands.

Katia was moving west-northwest near 22 mph. That general motion was expected to continue for the next two days, though the forward speed could decrease, the hurricane center said.

Katia could grow into a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph by Saturday evening, perhaps more than 500 miles east of the Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico, the hurricane center said. It is too early to predict whether the storm will threaten land.

Category 3 hurricanes have maximum sustained winds of 111 to 130 mph.

Katia is the storm name that replaced Katrina in the revolving list of names, according to the center. The list of Atlantic hurricane names is repeated every seven years, and this year the list that was used in 2005 is being reused.

A storm name is retired if it is used for a hurricane that caused major damage, as Katrina did to the U.S. Gulf Coast in 2005.

"The only time that there is a change is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for obvious reasons of sensitivity," the hurricane center said.

[Updated at 5:42 p.m. ET] Tropical Storm Katia was strengthening in the Atlantic Ocean on Tuesday and could become a hurricane on Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center said.

In its 5 p.m. ET advisory, the hurricane center said Katia has maximum sustained winds of 60 mph - up from 45 mph six hours earlier. The storm was about 750 miles west of the southernmost of the Cape Verde Islands, which are hundreds of miles off the west coast of Africa.

Katia was moving west-northwest near 20 mph.

[Updated at 11:40 a.m. ET] In its 11 a.m. ET advisory, the hurricane center said Katia has maximum sustained winds of 45 mph. The storm was in the open Atlantic about 630 miles west-southwest of the southernmost of the Cape Verde Islands. It was moving west-northwest at 18 mph. That general motion was expected to continue for the next few days.

[Updated at 5:25 a.m. ET] Tropical Storm Katia barreled across the Atlantic Ocean early Tuesday and is expected to intensify and accelerate, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

As of 5 a.m. ET, Katia was about 535 miles (855 kilometers) west-southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands and carried maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (65 kph).

The CNN poll today is which one of these three are you most afraid of: hurricane, tornado, or earthquake? I have lived through all three. I choose: none, thank you very much. I do heed warnings, though, even if reporters are silly enough to stand out in the middle of a storm to get the "Big Scoop." There are infinite resources to find out what is really happening minute-to minute, which is how I kept up-to-date. I live in West Palm Beach and thank God it missed us, but not by much. I pray for the survivors of Irene and God forbid Katia.

First, a hurricane is what it is: thank God we can evacuate areas under potential target zones. God Bless all of those who were killed, injured, and are cleaning up as we speak.....I for one had to evacuate, and still am surrounded by many neighbors who didn't...Now,about Ms. Bachmann, she isn't really a moron,I'd say more like a for-real crazy/mental case, and an extremist in politics, to boot; and she actually has a iollowing of supporters! Now THERE are the morons!!! It amazes me, although I don't know why because I do know they exist, that people believe in her crazy train of thought. And they really think that she would make a great President of the USA!? !The world will definitely laugh more intensely at, and dislike our country, even more than they already do!(btw, yes, they mostly don't and haven't for many years now, like us, and recently I talked to different Americans who thought that I was wrong)! Get out there and travel, people, or just listen to BBC or something besides our limited tv stations that fail to cover international news fully if at all, and talk to some other travelers, and if they have even half a brain, they will agree with me. Thank God that she would never even possibly be elected...no one "in charge" of weeding out the "bad choices to run as the Rep. party's contender", will dare even let her get that far. Can you imagine the debates, just imagine her and Obama, he, such an intellectual, even with or without cue cards or written notes, lol, it would be like Sarah Palin on steroids! (another one for the Republican party to disclaim as a contender).
Here's hoping we all get out alive on this planet that we have abused and neglected, these days, and wasn't this blog about something else anyway, oh yeah, the nut saying its the end of the world and we should all leave! Like, yeah, lets get out and go destroy another planet, if there even was one, lets do it again! Again, these would be, remember, are the same deluded people who think there is no such thing as global-warming, though it has been proven in millions of ways, and that the world really is only thousands of years old, not the millions before man even walked it, again, again, proven. And each religion, in this case, Fundamentalist Christian, believe no one else can "get into heaven" but THEM.(uh, what about the remainder of us, including various Christians, who migrated to America so that they could actually follow their hearts and their God and have freedom of speech??) Anyway, although they push our buttons, we have to stand united and get through this upcoming election....and Obama hasn't had a 2nd term, not fair, after all that he was left to work with after Bush left. Pres. Obama knows a lot more than any one else out there now eye-balling running, about how this system runs; he is ever-the appropriate listener as well, has incredibly strong, great self-control when confronted by those out to insult him; not quick to make quips or insult someone; is a smart businessman as well as a beloved family Dad, and he sticks to his word when he is allowed to, respects the likes of the Kennedys, John F., Bobby, and Ted, regarding our health care,( no one should have to be without it); he is highly intelligent, and has wonderful integrity. The only contenders I see for the Democrats are either sleezy, yuck, inexperienced,, non-leader types, not too smart, haven't worked with world politics, fakes who will do anything to get a chance to run, NOT-intelligent,(did I already say it??), and some are just plain small -time ignorant when it comes to running the country. I repeat this, too, in our interactions with our an ever-growing, violent, changing world, we need Obama now more than ever, and he hasn't had long enough....he was doing more in his first 3 months than Bush accomplished in either of his terms of 8 years, and we are talking a huge stock market crash, homeless people, crooked realtors and bankers, who caused most of it, greedy wealthy people who can't see beyond their bank accounts and power hungry people, ditto; also losses of jobs and retirement funds; loss of control when it came to regulating how banks and lending was being done, in the first place,(and if that had been in place, perhaps it would have prevented the huge fall), which Republicans don't believe much in (government controlling us with too many laws and regulations) yet look what can happen when our government, run by an outstanding and brilliant President surrounded by his advisers, in other words: don't you think, deep in your heart no matter where you stand politically, any President who can keep his cool and make smart decisions under the kind of pressure that he has had, doesn't leap to snap inappropriate decisions or lose his cool, creates change whenever he is allowed to,(notice ALLOWED), deserves another term?? I think many will be shocked to will that he can do it, win, but we all have to stand behind him. He will be written up in our grand-children's , and their grand-children's history books as one of the smartest and "best" Presidents in all of the group,( already a fact). We can't change people's minds, but we CAN help him win. I still pray for peace, but wasn't it Pres. W. who pushed us away from original target, Afghanistan, into Iraq?? WTH was up with that? Oh, well, Pres. O. gets blamed for everything. PEACE!

I love thunderstorms and watching the clouds darken, the lightening, but when I saw waves rolling into my east coast town , and was taking photos prior to our evacuation,Irene was just hours away, hadn't even really"struck", and saw them hit OVER the pier, I knew the potential for suffering, danger and fear......lest we forget our citizens in New Orleans???

S., leave Fl., before it starts, heading to higher ground. I didn't know this, either, until it was laid out...Google it and it will tell you the months, as I have forgotten, but I do know it begins around June....ends probably after Dec.?? The issue is, the planet's average temperature varies and it appears cyclic in nature. So, whether the hotness we are getting into is caused by human activity or not. The question is how best we adapt to these changing conditions. The other questions are our industrial age and high population acclerating this normal warming or are we doomed or not doomed regardless of what we do. Maybe a future planet with a struggling 2 billion people can be better off than 9 billion fighting in the name of God and politics for the dwindling resources. Suppose Mother Earth has a method of tugging at gravity and pulls a giant rock onto itself from nearby space allowing mass extinction of any life form which gets to ‘fat’ for its own good.
