Nutrition professor Mark Haub, who lost 27 pounds eating mainly Twinkies, powdered donuts and Oreo cookies, is back to an average American diet.
Since ending his junk food experiment in November, he has gained 2 pounds and his cholesterol has also increased a little bit, he said. He also has gained a new insight into the debate over healthy eating.
"People have a hatred towards (processed) foods," he said. "I like them. I eat them. It's amazing how people believe if it's processed, it's not food."
What also caught Haub by surprise was "how vitriolic people can be when they take a stance, whether it's low-carb or paleo diet. It's like politics. Those discussions can get heated. It's the same thing with religion, I'm right. You're wrong."
Last fall, Haub shed 13% of his weight over two months restricting his diet to 1,600 calories while eating "junk food." Surprisingly, his cholesterol readings improved and his level of triglycerides, which are a form of fat, decreased. This could have been explained by the decreased consumption of calories.
November 8, 2010: Twinkie diet helps nutrition professor lose 27 pounds
Today he eats three meals a day, consuming about 2,200 calories with food choices like turkey sandwiches, peanut butter, and snacking on pears.
"The main thing I did was reduce portion size," he said about what he learned from the diet. "It's that concept of mindfulness or mindful eating - I eat relatively the same. I just eat less."
And he still munches on an occasional Twinkie or snack cake.
Correction: When I said "somebody can eat 7 Hamburgers a day and lower there cholesterol." I meant without the Hamburger Bun. Also Corn syrup and Fructose are not only sugars but they can also cause insulin resistance. What the liver does is if the body don't burn up the excess sugar then the Liver converts the excess into Fat and Cholesterol. Since the Human Cells cannot absorb Fructose and Corn syrup as easily as some other simple sugars. Even more of the excess is converted to Triglycerides and LDL-HDL..
I'm a chemist. Carbohydrates, such as sugars, do not convert directlly to fats/oils or sterols. They are chemically very different. There MAY be an INDIRECT route which causes the body to increase fat and/or cholesterol in response to dietary intake, but this is complex and unproven.
You might think this is a moot point, but it is first year organic chemistry, and it bugs me when people get it wrong.
The twinkie diet is insane. I am the Dunkin' Doughnuts diet and I like the variety of sugared treats that it provides.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this the same story that was in the news about two weeks ago, isn't it ? No new news CNN ?
Hey, what's wrong with recycling?
would people shut up with the news CNN provides. get the hell off if you don't like it.
Omg, Cnn, your sooooooo lazy!!! BaaaaHaaaa
OMG your grammar is so lazy!
Look at the dates: there are comments from August 10.
It is listed as updated Aug 30. They should probably just have posted a new story, and linked to the Aug 10.
Personally, I'm starting the beer and pizza diet tonight. We'll see what happens.
I guess there must have been more important news that day.
@ Bimbo the Birthday Clown:
I knew a man who really believed that red wine turned directly into blood.
Was he a Catholic Priest? No, wait....other way around.
Mi, Mi, Mi..(ahem) Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy BIRTHdaaa y dear BAN-a-seeee, Haaappy Birthday to yoouu! ( and Happy EVERY day, my friend and sista)
So let me understand, man loses 27 pounds by consuming less calories? WOW. Has that ever been done before? And oh wait, when he went back to consuming more calories he started gaining weight!!! I'm so confused, how does that happen???
Bingo. But amazingly there are people who don't get it.
1600 calories of junk food is about 3 twinkies, no wonder he lost weight!
Actually, each Twinkie contains only 150 calories.
"Junk" has nothing to do with the calorie aspect here. I could eat 3,000 calories a day of the "healthiest" food on earth; but, if I burn only 2,000 a day then I will put on 1 pound in about 3 1/2 days. The only way to lose weight (not water weight) is to burn more than you consume. Simple. Now, whether you are healthy in eating choices is a different matter.
What a freain' idiot. I could lose weight eating ANYTHING if I limited myself to 1,750 calories a day.
That's the point. Simply being a processed food doesn't make twinkies unhealthy. They're unhealthy because they're high in calories. You can eat processed food all you like, it doesn't have an independent unhealthy impact other than the one from the calories.
This guy is a idiot... if it's such a good diet, I think he should stay on it for a year and see what happens. I am sorry but eating like crap for a long period of time and watch those numbers turn he was also eating less at 1600 cals per day as compared to 2200. This is a crappy example to set with no real backing.
My guess is that you probably watch what you eat to an extreme as well as exercise and haven't lost as much weight as him. You just come across as bitter. What do you care how he eats/what he eats etc.?
Sorry to say, but this guy is a nutrition professor and he did this as an experiment for his students to show the concept of calories burned/consumed. As a result, it would seem your comment is null and void as you have no proof of your ability to correctly discern whether this is scientific research.
Two months is a long time to be eating so-called garbage. You are not very bright.
He was trying to show people that it's not always what you eat, but how much you eat. If he stayed on it for a year, theoretically, he could continue to lose weight. More calories burned than calories taken in equals weight loss. His health after a year would be a different matter, as would his absorption rates and metabolism.
Maybe he just got tired of eating twinkies. I don't even like those things. The cake portion manages to feel greasy but taste dry at the same time. Mrs. Baird's apple pies are the best thing at the gas station.
Wow, this guy is a real scientist. Lets see...
I think anyone who restricts their calories and eats a nutritionally poor diet will have 2 things happen. They will lose weight and will deplete their vitamins and minerals stored up in their system. Now if this guy wanted to put some real science on the line he would eat his "diet" for 5 years and see how well is body responds at that point. I would love to see him vs someone eating a nutritionally dense, high vegetable diet with grass fed or wild type animal protein. Then have them train for a marathon and see how well they do. Thanks CNN for another brilliant article to help the american people understand how to eat and stay healthy.
I think that you don't understand the article. The point was that calories cause people to gain weight, not degree of processing. He isn't advocating this diet for anyone and isn't saying that it's "healthy".
"There MAY be an INDIRECT route which causes the body to increase fat and/or cholesterol in response to dietary intake, but this is complex and unproven."
Wow, really? Are you saying what I think you're saying? It's complex and unproven that eating more carbohydrates/sugar will cause your body to convert the excess energy to fat stores? I'm pretty sure this concept goes beyond mere common sense and falls under the category of "duh." Doesn't take a scientist to figure that one out.
