Update: Weight up, cholesterol up for man who lost 27 pounds on Twinkie diet

Nutrition professor Mark Haub, who lost 27 pounds eating mainly Twinkies, powdered donuts and Oreo cookies, is back to an average American diet.

Since ending his junk food experiment in November, he has gained 2 pounds and his cholesterol has also increased a little bit, he said. He also has gained a new insight into the debate over healthy eating.

"People have a hatred towards (processed) foods," he said. "I like them. I eat them. It's amazing how people believe if it's processed, it's not food."

What also caught Haub by surprise was "how vitriolic people can be when they take a stance, whether it's low-carb or paleo diet. It's like politics. Those discussions can get heated. It's the same thing with religion, I'm right. You're wrong."

Last fall, Haub shed 13% of his weight over two months restricting his diet to 1,600 calories while eating "junk food." Surprisingly, his cholesterol readings improved and his level of triglycerides, which are a form of fat, decreased. This could have been explained by the decreased consumption of calories.

November 8, 2010: Twinkie diet helps nutrition professor lose 27 pounds

Today he eats three meals a day, consuming about 2,200 calories with food choices like turkey sandwiches, peanut butter, and snacking on pears.

"The main thing I did was reduce portion size," he said about what he learned from the diet. "It's that concept of mindfulness or mindful eating - I eat relatively the same. I just eat less."

And he still munches on an occasional Twinkie or snack cake.

Actually, domehead, I am a female vegetarian who is 5'9" tall and weighs a healthy 150 pounds. I have been a vegetarian for over six years now and have had no health problems at all. Can you say that for the guy who's overweight by 200 pounds and, at the age of 40, has already had heart surgery from the massive amounts of fried foods and animal carcass he consumes each day? I think not. So why don't you do some research before you start judging others' diets. Thanks! 🙂

Please note that Dr. Haub will be speaking at a FREE Webinar EET Fitness is hosting tomorrow night Wednesday August 31st. Again, the webinar is FREE and open to the public (although space is limited).

No solicitations of any kind will be made before during or after the presentation. It's being offered for educational purposes only. The webinar starts at 6:15 PM Pacific Time. Dr. Haub will do a short prensentattion of his new "Eating Better" Plan he has developed since ending his Twinkie Diet Experiment, will review how the plan is different from other philosophies like Taubes, Dr. Oz and other major nutritions plans, and following this there will be a question and answer period. Search EET's Blog for more information.

Please note: Dr. Haub has no affilliation with the EET Fitness Plan. He is not endorsing the EET Fitness Plan nor is he being paid for this appearance. EET simply believes Dr. Haub offers a unique and important perspective on weight loss and fitness and we asked him to share his views on nutrition and dieting at this webinar, and he was gracious enough to accept. If you are able to join us, I am sure you will agree, Dr. Haub has some answers other "experts" simply have not considered.

Hitler made prisoners go on twinkie diets.

People in the bible are the real idiots though because you know what they do? They fast. Why? Because they think it'll clear their minds. It's called starvation and hallucinations. That isn't god speaking, cuz there is no god. It's your body telling you that you are an idiot.

Medical experts really don't know as much as they think, especially nutrition. And ESPECIALLY if they're religious at all.

1600 calories for a grown man? Of course he lost weight, but I don't know if I believe that his cholesterol and triglycerides went down. He doesn't mention what is blood sugar was/is either. But, then, who cares? It's his body and he can eat whatever he wants, although it does seem somewhat irresponsible for a professional to publicize eating poorly especially with all the overweight kids (and adults) we have in this country.

Are you a nutrition scientist? Why don't you believe that his cholesterol went down?

What an idiot. Does he think this proves that processed foods are just as healthy as unprocessed foods? If YOU EAT LESS YOU LOSE WEIGHT, it's not rocket science but that does not tell you whether he felt better or had more energy. I'm sure this guy was able to keep up those kick boxing classes just fine uh huh. His next experiment will be to fast for a couple of days and watch Jersey Shore and he'll say "Watch T.V. and lose weight!"

It's what many of us have long been told and suspected was close to the truth: Eat fewer calories than you burn–over a sustained period of time–and you'll shed weight. It's not like people haven't been telling us that for decades now. Still, the twist, in that the calories may in be "good" or "bad" food is a great point to make. It's about taking a measure of calories. If you keep a dairy of your consumption each day, you then have to confront your intake.

Many years ago, when I was working full-time and at the same time taking a full load in graduate school, the same thing happened in another way: By burning a lot of energy. I lost 30 pounds from constantly needing to be on task and only being able to sleep four to five hours a day (which at this age I could probably not do to the degree that I did in my early thirties). That happened without any plan or any intention. And I daily ate mostly wiener sandwiches and a Hostess blueberry pie that I liked. I just ate for fuel–and as cheaply and quickly as possible–but it was not good food.

So it comes back to the decades-old advice: Eat fewer calories, or conversely, burn more calories to shed body weight.

What a pointless experiment. At 1600 calories a day, of course anyone is going to lose weight.

My own experience closely matches that of Professor Haub. When I lived in the SF Bay Area, I ate a very healthy vegetable rich diet, and plenty of meat and fish too, but not fried and not too much red meat. My cholesterol hovered just under 300 at its worst, but was no lower than about 250. I moved to North Carolina and discovered fried foods and I also started making cakes. I like to bake. What can I say? Regardless, my dietary habits changed dramatically for the worse and I braced myself for the news that I was going to be joining the ranks of people on cholesterol lowering drugs. Unlike Professor Haub, my weight DID increase, by about 15 pounds. I was shocked when my doctor told me that my cholesterol was 150. The "good" cholesterol was ideal as well. Nobody seems to be able to explain it. I eat BBQ pork sandwiches with hush puppies and mac and cheese at least twice a week too! I think God wants us to lighten up and have some BBQ.
