Update: Weight up, cholesterol up for man who lost 27 pounds on Twinkie diet

Nutrition professor Mark Haub, who lost 27 pounds eating mainly Twinkies, powdered donuts and Oreo cookies, is back to an average American diet.

Since ending his junk food experiment in November, he has gained 2 pounds and his cholesterol has also increased a little bit, he said. He also has gained a new insight into the debate over healthy eating.

"People have a hatred towards (processed) foods," he said. "I like them. I eat them. It's amazing how people believe if it's processed, it's not food."

What also caught Haub by surprise was "how vitriolic people can be when they take a stance, whether it's low-carb or paleo diet. It's like politics. Those discussions can get heated. It's the same thing with religion, I'm right. You're wrong."

Last fall, Haub shed 13% of his weight over two months restricting his diet to 1,600 calories while eating "junk food." Surprisingly, his cholesterol readings improved and his level of triglycerides, which are a form of fat, decreased. This could have been explained by the decreased consumption of calories.

November 8, 2010: Twinkie diet helps nutrition professor lose 27 pounds

Today he eats three meals a day, consuming about 2,200 calories with food choices like turkey sandwiches, peanut butter, and snacking on pears.

"The main thing I did was reduce portion size," he said about what he learned from the diet. "It's that concept of mindfulness or mindful eating - I eat relatively the same. I just eat less."

And he still munches on an occasional Twinkie or snack cake.

It's the size of what you eat. many entertainers keep thie rweight becuase they often but little portions. The body is constantly burning calories becuase it' knows it's being fed. There are no leftovers to build fat. So eat often but eat less.
No BIG meals. So Mc Donalds cut that bogo crap on a quarter punder with cheese. Don;t you love those people who order all that fat food and then have a DIet Soda??

Some ppl don't believe/care about possible diet soda cancer risk and like the taste of diet soda. If you are gonna eat all that fatty food then shaving off a few hundred calories by drinking a diet soda only helps. Doesn't mean they think they are all of a sudden eating healthy b/c they got a diet soda. If they are going to consume a bunch of calories they would prefer it be on that fatty food rather than soda. It does make a difference.

    • Ummmmm.....diabetics?

There are just a few people around the world that are something called "diabetic".....maybe you've heard of it? They don't drink diet soda to shave a few calories, they do it to shave excess sugar, which causes insulin shock.

No. It all comes down to calories, period. Find out how many calories it takes you to maintain weight or lose a couple lbs in a week. Now, eat nothing but pizza, or ice cream, or twinkies. So long as you do not go over those calories, you will lose the same amount of weight, or maintain depending on the route you took. Doesn't matter what you eat, it is only, only about calories. Of course, it probably isn't the best long term route since your organs desire different nutrients to stay top notch, but that's about it. You all are welcome.

For a diabetic it comes down to carbs not callories.

No, for a diabetic it comes down to calories. Doesn't matter what you have, calories calories calories – that's all you must remember.

      @Snarks

Reconsider what you are saying to diabetics. Are you even in healthcare? Most would have their licenses revoked for telling diabetics it's simply calories. I would refer you to PubMed Health of the NIH for a more reliable source on diabetes and diet than your opinion.

Diabetics can develop life-threatening issues from too little or too much carbs or sugars in the diet. Carbs and sugar content of the foods do matter.

Actually, Snarks, for diabetics it is both carbs and calories. Caloric intake is restricted to lose weight, as fat is an insulin inhibitor. Carbohydrates (not just "sugar") is also restricted, because diabetes causes high blood glucose, which is harmful to the body's vital organs and to your blood vessels (too little blood glucose is also harmful). For heathy eating, most people need to maintain proper balance, For diabetics, the balance they require is different than the "norm."

And some people drink diet sodas because they LIKE them! I can't stand the icky sweetness of a regular soda. Thinking that someone orders a diet coke with their fattening hamburger because they are counting calories is just nuts. Stop judging people so harshly.

Wrong on all counts. It wasn't but a few years back that scientists were telling you coffee was horrible for your health. Doctors were recommending cigarettes in the 40's and 50's telling the public that it had great affects on your body; they have been telling you for years what is right and then switching it up once they do more research. Well, I am right and these scientists have yet to evolve to the level to say otherwise. It is all about calories, and that is final.

Sodas are the worst culprits. Diet sodas are no better.

You are better off with unsweetened ice tea.

That's true. People get really fat on soda pop. They say the things people just can't get enough of are chips, ice cream, and sodas. Drinking a can of coke is like eating ten sugar cubes. Imagine that.

This guy is my hero. I have been interested in the relationship between diet and heart health for over 20 years. The fact is: the way to lose weight is to consume fewer calories. It doesn't matter what you eat, you just need to eat less. People don't like that answer because it involves will power.

Depends on a person's other medical issues. If they have diabetes or high cholesterol, then certain things like carbs, sugars, types of fats, and cholesterol content also matter.

I do agree calorie control is a key to weight loss, though. But, not the only key for healthy weight loss.

Ya Kyle...they get that diet soda so they can actually feed their face with more junk food. So it will take them a few more feedbags to get to 400 lbs that's the difference. People are such slobs.

Saying "it's all only calories" is making many assumptions. It dangerously ignores a host of medical conditions that can develop (deficiencies and excesses). No, it's not simply certain organs needing certain components.

Please check more reliable sources on the matter (like your doctor or nutritionist, sites with clinical evidence – not personal stories).

Please also remember that Mark Haub also ate vegetables and supplements to round out his Twinkie diet.

Why anyone wants to put junk food that's filled with chemicals and preservatibes in them is beyond me. He wasn't eating much is why he lost weight, Nothing healthy was going into him, do that long-term and he would end up having major health problems in the long run, like all the unhealthy obese fast food and junk food addicts that are diabetic.

He was not endorsing the junk food diet, that was never his goal. He was simply showing the relationship between caloric intake and weight loss. Nothing more, nothing less. The big recommendation he made was portion control.

That a ridiculous publicity stunt. Of course you'll lose weight on a starvation diet of only 1600 calories! If he ate 1600 calories worth of dog feces he would have lost 27 pounds. So what has he actually proven...that eating too few calories causes you to lose weight? DUH!!! The fact that his cholesterol dropped on his Twinkie diet tells you how crappy this guy's regular diet is. CNN wrote a real fluff piece on this kook!

I work on a "maintenance" diet of 1200 calories. I gain weight like crazy when I eat 1600 calories. But then, men are able to burn more calories than women in the first place.

Depends on the pizza. Authentic pizza with all natural ingredients, consisting of sauce, bread and a little cheese? Not that bad for you at all. Pizza Hut? Not good.

This diet is obviously dangerous, and the Dr. was probably trying to point out PORTION SIZE in relationship to WEIGHT LOSS.

What he did was eat EMPTY CALORIES for 10 weeks. You cannot live off of empty calories. You won't get any of the essential amino acids, vitamins, nutrients which your body requires from different food sources.

Like that guy who went on the all beer fast/diet for a month and lost weight. Yeah it's fine and dandy for the first month, but really what about long term? What kind of weight is lost? Is your body consuming its own muscle proteins to create glucose? Is it loss in water weight? Come on.

Many forget the side note in the original news:

He ate salads and vitamin supplements along with the "Twinkie" diet.

Relative to him and his few medical issues, it was a safe short-term diet.
