Obama agrees to move address to Congress by a day

President Barack Obama has agreed to deliver an economic address to Congress on September 8, rather than September 7 as he originally requested, after House Speaker John Boehner raised concerns about the earlier date, the White House said Wednesday night.

Obama had announced earlier Wednesday that he wanted to address Congress at 8 p.m. on September 7, intending to introduce his highly anticipated job growth plan. But in a letter to Obama, Boehner, R-Ohio, noted that 8 p.m. was less than two hours after the House is scheduled to complete legislative business, and that security sweeps of the chamber usually take more than three hours.

Boehner countered with a suggestion to move the speech to September 8.

Numerous observers have pointed out that September 7 conflicts with a Republican presidential debate to be held at the Reagan Library in California, and September 8 is the day of the opening game of the National Football League's regular season. People from both parties made accusations - on condition of not being named - of high-handed behavior by the other side.

Here is the White House's statement, released Thursday night, announcing Obama's acceptance of an address on September 8:

"Today, the president asked to address the Congress about the need for urgent action on the economic situation facing the American people as soon as Congress returned from recess. Both houses will be back in session after their August recess on Wednesday, September 7, so that was the date that was requested.

"We consulted with the speaker about that date before the letter was released, but he determined Thursday would work better. The president is focused on the urgent need to create jobs and grow our economy, so he welcomes the opportunity to address a joint session of Congress on Thursday, September 8 and challenge our nation's leaders to start focusing 100% of their attention on doing whatever they can to help the American people."

A White House official said earlier Wednesday that Boehner's office had been consulted about the September 7 request and raised no objection. But Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck said that "no one in the speaker's office - not the speaker, not any staff - signed off on the (September 7) date the White House announced today."

The time of the September 8 address wasn't immediately announced.

Oh, Obama is there nothing you won't cave on? You are the president. You want to speak to Congress? They should be there. They have more important things to do like campaign? So what? Would you let someone take the day off from doing their current job when they are behind and not performing to go prepare/vet for another job?

IMO this plan is either going to make or break Mr. Obama's presidency. This better be one hell of a speech / plan, I am a bit disappointed in that he once again has given in to Speaker B.

The tea party republicans know their days are numbered...for their party platform and agenda always entails American people being stood up. The President did right to let 'em keep this bone for grouchy Boehner's doggy bowl. Obama will not be dealing with any of them during his second term.

He is showing to both parties the adequate that we share. Who's the better person, leader. The majority of congress, GOP wanted a child's argument. It would make President Obama look worse.

(I tried posting this earlier so sorry if this duplicates.)

Note the press release states that "the President asked to address the Congress". The President is an invited guest (by the Speaker) that can address Congress just like any other head of state. Notice the President stands on the tier below the Speaker's durning his speech to illustrate that he is a guest in the House Chamber. Obama didn't cave or throw anyone a bone, it's simply beyond his power.

So, what are you gonna do when I start possessing the zombies again and make them commit atrocities? Are you gonna blame islam, or the american government, or some other terrorist group? As long as I remain here in human form I will always have control of YOU and everything you do. If you try to take what is mine I will destroy you. If you harm my children I will wipe your DNA off the face of the planet. If you poison me I will introduce a new drug that will put a stranglehold on your society. If you take away my home and my job I will cripple your economy and make sure you never get it back in order until you do what I say.
"can anyone deny that the 21st century was not completely mine"- Satan.
" I dont give a sh!t about you anymore and last week was just a warning shot" – God.

Much ado over nothing. Media hyped a request by the SOTH for Mr. President to move his speech to the next night. Even mentioning his speech might interfere with the NFL game that night to get everyone frothing at the mouth. Fox did it. CNN did it. Both medias play on your emotions for ratings.

0bama didn't have a choice, but to cave- in. The House has its own rules. If you invite yourself over to someone's house for dinner, you don't tell them what to make and when to serve it. Besides, the house did Obama a favor. Obama will give his jobs joke I mean speech opposite the start of football season. The less person who hear Obama's speech the better it is for Obama. A prelude to the speech is that 40 companies in the high tech, financial, and health sectors will sponsor 7000 engineering internships. The joke is that these sectors DON'T use engineers. Maybe, if Obama visited the engineering college he would know it. B.S. Obama is about to strike again!

I hate when President Obama the Great gives a speech. The earth stops rotating on it's axis, birds freeze in mid-air, water stops flowing over Niagra. Hard to get anything done until he's finished and everything resumes. Then there's all those birds banging into things cause they got so disoriented from the mid-air freeze. Fortunately well less than half the people now also freeze up to stop, watch and listen. More like only a third.

If after an Obama speech when you as one of the dwindling number snap back into reality and your ear feels a bit sore, that was me standing behind motionless, Obama-entranced you, repeatedly flicking it with a finger.

Face up to it, Obama tried to pull a dominant hamster routine. And he ended up dejuicing his own speech.
