No jobs added in August

Hiring slammed to a complete halt in August as several fresh challenges put the American economy in turmoil.

Employers added no jobs during the month and the unemployment rate remained at 9.1%, the Labor Department said Friday.

The report was partially distorted by 22,000 state workers in Minnesota returning to work after a temporary government shutdown in July, as well as 45,000 Verizon workers on strike in August.

Those effects made it hard to compare the August jobs number to the 85,000 jobs gained in July.

Still though, the overall figure is considered weak in comparison to job gains of about 200,000-a-month, earlier this year.

Economists typically estimate the nation needs to add about 150,000 jobs each month to keep up with population growth alone. It needs even stronger growth to recover the millions of jobs lost during the financial crisis.

I hear all this talk about what the government can do to increase employment in America. Well in my opinion they can start by making the training programs for wind energy available to all who apply. My husband traveled 58 miles to Bakersfield, CA to go to an orientation for training as a wind and/or solar techinician in Tehachipi, CA where the largest wind and solar energy technology farms exist in the U.S., which by the way the government has already porovided the funding for, only to be told that the career center's only function was to gather applicants' applications and personal information so that it could be sent to Washington DC where a computer would randomly select the candidates that would approved for training. I ask, who came up with this bright idea, when my husband was 1 of 4 others who even interested in these positions.

@Scottish: I've cooked in restaurants, dug ditches, did landscaping, built houses and currently work in a grocery store while I go to school. Any job I left was due to the owner/manager/coworkers being abusive. Your little world of extremes going on inside your head doesn't work on me. Go try on somebody else.
