Police grab $2 million worth of cars after Canadian street race

This could be the plot for a movie, "Fast and Furious Canada," or maybe "Fast and Furious, the Young and the Rich."

Police in British Columbia say they impounded $2 million worth of high-end vehicles this week after witnesses reported the 13 cars racing on a metro Vancouver highway at speeds of 125 mph (200 kph).

The high-end race cars included a Ferrari, Lamborghinis, Maseratis, an Audi, an Aston Martin, Nissans and a Mercedes, according to a Royal Canadian Mounted Police press release.

Two of the racers would run side-by-side to block other traffic going in their direction on the highway while the others cars would take off in a race, witnesses told the RCMP.

"These drivers seemed to be looking for attention. Well, they definitely got the attention of police," Cpl. Holly Marks, spokesperson for the Lower Mainland District Regional Police Service, said in the press release.

What the racers, who police said are all under age 21, won't get is harsh punishment.

"Each driver will be charged with Driving without Reasonable Consideration and receive a violation ticket with a specified penalty of $196. Additionally, these drivers will be responsible for all associated towing and storage charges," according to the RCMP press release.

That's because police didn't actually catch them in the act and acted only on witness accounts. They weren't caught on radar, video or seen by a police officer, Superintendent Norm Gaumont, RCMP officer in charge of traffic enforcement for the Lower Mainland, told the Surrey Now newspaper.

"I know there's a lot of disappointment, wondering why we only charged them with an offence of $196. They fact of the matter is, we have to look at all the evidence we have and what we're able to prove," Surrey Now quoted Gaumont as saying. "That's why we've charged them with driving without due consideration for the public."

If police were able to charge the 13 drivers with more severe offenses, they could have faced forfeiture of their vehicles, according to a Vancouver Sun report.

The RCMP said most of the drivers were operating their vehicles on "N" class licenses, which means they had not yet attained full driving privileges. Only one of the drivers was the registered owner of the car they were driving, Gaumont told Surrey Now.

The drivers included 12 men and one woman, according to Surrey Now. Gaumont told the paper they were on their way to have a meal when they decided to race.

According to the Sun, the vehicles were:

  • 2007 Ferrari 599
  • 2010 Lamborghini Gallardo
  • 2010 Lamborghini Gallardo
  • 2009 Lamborghini Gallardo
  • 2009 Audi R8
  • 2012 Nissan GT-R
  • 2010 Nissan GT-R
  • 2010 Nissan GT-R
  • 2010 Maserati Turismo
  • 2010 Maserati Turismo
  • 2011 Mercedes SL63
  • 2011 Mercedes SLS
  • 2005 Aston Martin DB9

If your Camero has over 600 horsepower, then maybe. Let's not forget most of these cars listed will do over 180MPH. You might have a chance winning on a 1/4 mile race, but I doubt your Camero is geared to do more than 155MPH.

my camaro has a built pontiac 428 that's bored out .060 over.. i have ross racing pistons and a billet roller comp cam.. 226/230 duration. the motor is nitrous friendly and can handle a 300hp shot.. the only weak spot is i have a 4spd muncie so i have to be careful not to hammer the thorttle to much or it could brake the transmission...

WHATEVER... they might have top end speed... but nothing can match a 428 pontiac on tourque and horsepower... mine has 450hp and around 550 tourqe and that's without the nitrous shot...

There isn't a camaro on the planet worth buying.

Plus, all of the people that drive them are garbage. Just look at the hero that posted the original comment about how awesome he thinks he is.

I've been in the racing business for some time. Let's just say it like this... The second anyone starts talking about nitrous, don't continue the conversation. At that point, it's over. Why? Because the fast and furious is just a movie. I'm sure this guy wants to have carnal relations with both paul walker and vin diesel at the same time. He lives his life one stroke at a time while watching one of these crappy fast and furious movies on the regular.

Nitrous is the cheater's way out. Cheap horsepower. Most of the time it isn't done right anyway.

"oooh I'm awesome I get 300 HP out of a shot of nitrous!"

Yeah, but what happens when your bottle of gaseous horsepower runs out? You're done. And that's because you own a crappy camaro.

whatever punk... my camaro cant be touched.. nitrous or not.. i've never dyno'd it but i know for sure it makes close to 500hp and atleast 550 tq.. i had the motor built for a power adder.. eventually i will put a bds 8-71 blower on it.. the thing is it is 4000$ and the other stuff you need is 2000$ for extra stuff fo it... so for now i use nitrous..

  6. Stupid, Stupid Kids

First of all, what are these kids doing with these cars? Did they all borrow their dad's car, or are their parents just that ignorant and buy them these expensive vehicles, WHEN IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THEY WILL DRIVE RECKLESSLY IN THEM. Everyone knows that owners of these kinds of cars have lead foots. I hope these kids lose their license because they are young and stupid and don't know how dangerous it can be to drive. STUPID STUPID KIDS.

You're right that the kids shouldn't have those cars – their parents are too stupid to realize that, but you should know that most of the owners of "fast" or "high end" cars drive them much more subtly than the average person on the road. Most of the time when you see speeders, its someonen in a 1.3L Mazda, or a 160HP Grand Prix, thinking his car is a race car because of its name. The Vette ZR1, the Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Vipers, etc, are usually the few cars you see doing 55 in a 55 zone.

Great to see some of you social drunks oops I meant social drinkers and serial food abusers discuss responsibility like you guys are paragons of virtue. Since you all seem to have come to this conclusion that these children can't own or drive these vehicles because they are careless, who tells your listless asses that you can't smoke because well your second hand smoke affects others as well as yourself? Better yet, who tells you obese pachyderms in training to push away from the dinner table because well your obesity is one of the reasons the health insurance costs in this country are sky high? Still feeling RESPONSIBLE? Admit it you're just mad at your lives and how inconsequential it has become. These are kids we are talking about here regardless of how they got the vehicles they are driving KIDS! Not a group of disgruntled middle aged beach master seals crying on the CNN.com website about the failings of another human being. I'm betting none of the kids they caught look anything like you beached orcas!

Yeah. They are garbage. The people that drive camaros that is. The cars, well, if anyone other than white trash drove them, then maybe they'd be worth something. But pretty much, they suck. The old body style, you couldn't see over the steering wheel, and I'm over 6'. The new body style, the windows are so bloody small you can't see anything. I think they were designed that way so you would have no choice but to drive them straight into a wall at 125 mph. Which is fitting. I hope it happens to all of them.
