Bush documentary to air this Sunday

On the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001,  attacks, the documentary "George W. Bush: The 9/11 Interview" will air on National Geographic.

In an interview for the documentary, according to documentarian Peter Schnall, former President George W. Bush says he experienced no pleasure when he heard about the death of Osama bin Laden, the al Qaeda leader responsible for orchestrating the deadly terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. He also recalls his initial reaction to news about the attack and how it changed his presidency.

But should former President Bush feel some pleasure about bin Laden’s death? And what about his initial reaction to the attacks? CNN.com readers had strong opinions and plenty of them, some defended the former president and others said they still resent him for going to war with Iraq.

Southerner01 said, “Gotta love you Bush-haters. I respect him for the fact that he's not happy that we had to kill bin Laden. I personally felt no joy from it, just relief. Bin Laden was a monster. He did need to die. But it is an equally monstrous person who feels elation over it.”

MrLudd responded, “Well, I agree with your basic statements, except where it applies to Bush. Bush has proven himself over his political history to not give a flying fig about human life... especially non-whites and non-Americans. I don't buy for one split second that Bush doesn't feel elation over this because of any moral or ethical stance. More likely he doesn't feel joy of any kind over it mostly because he wasn't involved in killing him... and someone else got the credit.”

factChecker2 responded, “Bush bragged about the executions in Texas. Just saying.”

Guest12234 responded, “Bush is not happy that bin Laden was killed because he nor the GOP can claim credit for the kill. Hell not even Obama nor the Democrats should get credit. The credit should go towards the service men and women that were associated with the mission. If Bush had the respect for human life that you claim then he wouldn't have invaded Iraq as quickly as he did, and he certainly would've acted quicker with regards to Katrina.”

amembername responded, “It would be a totally different story for him if he actually caught him instead of giving up. I guarantee he would have absolutely no guilt for doing it. Maybe he should have ordered the troops to actually pursue him instead of trying to resolve his daddy's prior grudge with Hussein?”

figmo said, “There have been many books on this topic and whether you are right or left, it's hard to escape the conclusion from all that's been written that Bush did fine immediately after 9/11 but failed miserably thereafter. He was over his head and manipulated but Cheney/Rumsfeld. The cost to this country has been mind-numbing. Except for the unrestricted greed turned loose during the Reagan era, most of our problems today can be traced back to Bush's total mishandling of domestic and foreign policy. It's shocking and very disturbing that he got elected the first time but the second is beyond comprehension although this election, like the first, may have been stolen. Stolen elections or not, that half the voters still supported Bush the second time is very, very disturbing.”

sju36 responded, “As a Democrat, I honestly don't detest George W. Bush. In fact, I'd like to have a beer with the man. I feel more sorry for him: the man was simply not qualified to be president. He was entirely manipulated by the real, cynical villains in the picture, including Cheney, Rove, and Rumsfeld.”

MrLudd responded, “He did ‘fine’ basically by doing very little. He yelled into a megaphone from a heap of rubble and then did the one thing I can find in his presidency that wasn't a failure... he discouraged anti-Muslim violence and prejudice because of 9-11.”

bluesharp said, “He put us so far upside down going after the WRONG people after 9/11 – and never got close to capturing or killing Bin Laden – why should he feel good about it? I do remember him strutting across the deck of an aircraft carrier after launching the most useless war in modern history - yeah, mission accomplished, George, mission accomplished.”

Aeileo said, “I try to forget that Bush ever existed...But maybe if he spent more time looking for bin Laden instead of using that as an excuse to fight Iraq he would have caught him. And though the fight with Iraq was inevitable....it would of been nice to have some time to recoup economically between the wars.”

Beatlearl said, “If Preident Obama was a Republican after killing bin Laden he would have half the federal buildings and airports in the country named after him. Plus his face would be on Mt. Rushmore. Too bad for the President; wrong party and wrong color for some people.”

IrishYank2 responded, “Agreed. Statues would be erected in every town if Obama were a Republican. I think the statues would be even bigger due to the fact that Obama is black. IT would be an effective way for the GOP to gather minority votes.”

Are Muslims still angry with Americans?

Steven Kull, the director of the Program on International Policy Attitudes and author of the recently released book, Feeling Betrayed: The Roots of Muslim Anger at America, spent five years researching American sentiment in the Middle East, including conducting focus groups and surveys throughout the Muslim world. And he found that since 9/11 one thing has not improved: widespread anger at America in the Muslim world and the most fundamental issue is their perception that America seeks to undermine Islam.

Considering Americans will be observing the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on Sunday, CNN.com readers had many strong reactions. Some say they understand Muslim’s anger, others said that Muslims misunderstand Americans.

Dr Ruth said, “I work in the U.S. and one thing I found out is that most Americans are open minded and accepting of others. The problem arise on the lack of knowledge of other cultures, most Americans are not educated enough to understand is a nice way to put it I guess...”

Daniel Allen said, “People who come to our country need to respect our culture more, not the other way around. You have things backward.”

Jonathan said, “@ Daniel, you do need to understand the enemy.. this article is all about understanding them; it seems to me that they (Muslims) and the right-wing of Christianity in America want the same thing..I am sincerely deeply Christian and I want the opposite for both.”

Dr. Detroit said, “FACT: All terrorists flying planes on 911 were MUSLIM, so, if the Muslim community dislikes being grouped together or labeled, here is a suggestion. DO SOMETHING, try denouncing those who killed on 911, do it in public. You won't and you know why. Another attack of any kind on US soil where a Muslim of any kind kills or destroys will start a chain of events the Mid-east won't even believe. We don't care if you are offended, get over it.”

Kar said, “On 9/11, it was generally unpopular in a good deal of the Arab world. I know this because I was in Egypt when the attacks took place. No one I knew was celebrating those attacks, despite the fact that CNN seemed to find the few celebrations that went on and broadcast them.”

Rowan said, “I know how I feel about Muslims and about Islam. I think that those who attacked us on 9-11, those who continue to terrorize not only the U.S., but other countries and people of their own faith, are fanatic extremists. They do not represent the whole of Islam. They are what snake handlers and the end of the world cults are to Christians. People tend to forget that every faith has these people who make the whole of the religion look bad. I do not hate Muslims nor do I fear Islam.”

Flyingram said, “Rowan, there is a world of difference between garden variety fringe religious groups and those who have a long track record of blowing up innocent people in nearly every corner of the globe. The question remains – why is there no sense of outrage, demonstrations, and complete repudiation of this mass murder from American Muslims?”

Wzrd1 responded, “Flyingram, there ARE demonstrations and outraged speeches, but western media doesn't bother covering them at all. I've personally been present for some, while I was deployed.”

LKJ said, “American Muslims have repudiated every single act of violence. But our news conferences and essays are never reported on the news.”

Beall said, “What difference does it make why Muslims are mad at America? This is sort of like trying to figure out why the backwards fool down the street hates all his neighbors. No matter how innocent his neighbors might be he'll just making excuses and finding other reasons to continue with his hate and hostility.”

Mike said, “Of course the Muslims are not in support of the terrorists. but it’s a two way street. It’s not like anybody (except the tea party) supports the war anymore. Everybody wants out of the Middle East. The ‘political leaders’ who made these decisions and continue to support them are in our eyes, exactly like Al Qaeda. We don't support them, so to all Muslims, don't stereotype all Americans as trying to oppress your religion. It’s like us saying all Muslims support Al Qaeda. These ‘political leaders’ with their wrong decisions over and over make Americans as a whole look bad.”

AN said, “If Israel just leave the occupied land there will be peace. Or only if America stops its aid then next month there will be peace. Israel also knows by population it cannot absorb Palestinians. Look at the people lives on settlement and Palestinians life outside those settlements. Look at both sides.”

Ameen said, “Because America Supports Israel and Israel does not give Palestinians their state. I love America and hope that can change.”

USARocks said, “Muslims don't hate Jews or Christians. I have many Muslim friends and they do not hate me. They, like myself, do not approve of Israel policy towards Arabs. I suggest that you read the recent WikiLeaks on Israel to get a better perspective. Most Jews who live in Muslim countries live pretty peacefully. In fact, Muslims refer to Jews and Christians as 'people of the book' meaning they worship the same god and believe in their holy scriptures and message in Moses and Jesus. Let’s stop blaming world hunger on Muslims and trying to tag the world against them.”

Naser Oric said, “The problem is not religion, but America's support for Israel and thus far, America's support for oppression/occupation of Muslims in Palestine and Israel. That's the real problem, not religion.”
