Three dead, six wounded in shooting at Carson City IHOP

[Updated at 4:18 p.m.]

[Updated at 4:18 p.m.] Five of the nine people who were shot Tuesday were members of the National Guard, a spokesperson told CNN affiliate KRNV. Two were killed and the other three are being treated in area hospitals.

[Updated at 2:18 p.m.] At least two of the victims killed at a shooting in a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant were military members who were wearing their uniforms, Chuck Allen with the Nevada Highway Patrol said Tuesday.

Police were still looking into the shooter's possible motive, Allen said, but officials were taking precautions in case military personnel were specifically targeted.

"When you have people in uniform randomly targeted ... we take that seriously," Allen said.

Heightened security measures are in effect in military bases in northern Nevada, affiliate KRNV reported, citing a National Guard spokesperson. The restaurant is located about three miles from Nevada National Guard headquarters, so it would not be unusual for service members to be eating there, the spokesperson added.

[Updated at 2:10 p.m.] Three people were killed and six others were wounded Tuesday in a shooting at a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant, police said.

Those six victims did not include the shooter, who police said turned a gun on himself.

It "appears its going to be difficult for him to survive," Ken Furlong with the Carson City's Sheriff's Office said about the gunman.

"He was still breathing," he added.

Furlong said that currently the situation appears to be contained to the one strip mall.

"Right now it appears as though there was one shooter," Furlong said. "There does not appear to be safety concerns outside of this area."

Furlong confirmed reports that a semi-automatic weapon was used during the shooting. Some of the victims "appeared to be military folks," he said.

Officials are still investigating any possible motive.

[Updated at 1:48 p.m.] One person has been confirmed dead after a shooting at a an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, police have told The Reno Gazette-Journal.

Lt. Rob Van Diest of the Reno Police Department also told the paper that eight people have been transported to the hospital.

[Posted at 1:46 p.m.] Seven people were shot after a man walked up to an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, and shot a man on a motorcycle before walking inside the restaurant and opening fire, The Reno Gazette-Journal is reporting.

The owner of a store in the same shopping mall told the newspaper that he saw a man wearing a red shirt and black shorts pull up to the store in his blue minivan, take out a rifle and shoot a man on a motorcycle. The man then walked into the IHOP and began firing, the owner, Ralph Swagler, told the Gazette-Journal.

After shooting inside the IHOP, Swagler told the paper that the shooter then turned his gun to his store and began firing. He then pointed toward an H&R Block in the same mall and shot again.

CNN affiliate KNRV reports it is being told other nearby businesses are on lockdown.

Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command spokesman Chuck Allen told CNN his agency is assisting the Carson City Sheriff’s office at the scene but offered no more details

CNN affiliate KOLO said there were reports that the shooter was "taken down," but officials could not confirm that detail.

KOLO reported that at least two women and a man were airlifted from the location. At least one other victim was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Witnesses report hearing a semi-automatic weapon

Zomberry, are you really that stupid or do you pretend to be? The people in the airplanes on 9/11 didn't have a place to run away and they were told to stay put by the captain who themselves had been told to always obey hijackers.

The only reason the people on the last airplane fought back was because of the cell phone call they made and found out what was happening.

Tell do you think they same terrorists would succeed today with a knife?

How can you state that guns are the problem? Murder is illegal and people still do that. Speeding in your car is illegal and people still do that. If the U.S. made guns illegal it would make it harder for good honest people to have them while the criminals and people that aren't supposed to get them now wouldn't skip a beat. Guns are not the problem the psycho behind the trigger is. Don't punish the masses because of one or two psychos.

Yeah i support the 2nd amendment and a armed society.

If you were knowledgeable about the NRA and/or 2nd amendment enthusiasts you would know we don't want to arm everyone. We want the people that obey the law and take personal responsibilty seriously to have the legal ability to be armed if we so choose. I am not a member of the NRA, but I do own guns and can hit 9 shots on a 10 inch circle from 15 feet in under 5 seconds. I think anyone that legally, owns and carries a gun with the intent of using it in self defense should be able to do the same. Most all of my gun nut friends can. And NONE of them have ever fired their weapons outside of ranges, private land, or while hunting. Had we been there and armed the armed assailant would be dead.

actually firearms ARE the problem. You just dont have a bad temper to this extreme. In a pent up stressed out world where anger management classes are almost the norm for some people, its best not to let everyone and their dog have access to guns. Its sortof like saying 'nuclear weapons arent the problem, the USA has em and we dont use em.. ' .. well then lets let IRAN have some and maybe throw a few to the rest of the nut jobs in the world.

Just so we're clear – the zealots on this page are using the, well-if-he-can-get-one-why-can't-I logic? Please shut up. The point is that it is too easy to get a gun in this country and if you take away guns (which are for wimps who are too weak to actually take a punch) then people won't get shot with ... guns! No one is trying to throw the baby out with the bath water here – we're calling for GUN CONTROL not eliminating guns entirely. If you need one to make you feel manlier then your problem is probably not that you need a gun – it's probably that you need a viagra.

It's not like "google" – they can't just show up on the scene and have wikipedia answer all of their questions – there are cops who won't disclose certain information out of respect for the families of the deceased and the reporters do actually have to TYPE the story and SUBMIT the story – which takes time. everyone tends to get angry from time to time, sometimes more than other times. When I look back at some of these 'postal' slaughters over the past decade, I wonder, how many of them wouldnt have happened had the shooter needed a few days or weeks to track down a suitable weapon and as a result calmed down enough to realize their plan is ridiculous.

Your logic doesn't quite work out. If we use your statement that people get upset from time to time, then what if that same person had waited and had already bought a gun and had already decided his plan was stupid? Then he got "upset" again later on, and now had the gun to commit the crime? Listen the guns are not the problem the criminals are. Last I heard it was illegal to kill people. If we ban guns, only the criminals will have guns. Criminals don't obey the law anyway so only law-abiding citizens will suffer.. I would rather have the opportunity to defend myself and my family than to have some politician somewhere making that decision for me. We should have a national right-to-carry for those who can legally purchase a gun. Oh wait, that would be the 2nd amendment.

The NRA loves this shooting. There goal is for everyone to be armed no matter what kind of weapon. As always, there reply is guns don't kill but people do, and hopefully another gun carrying person can have a shootout with the killer. There logic is so full of holes.
