Three dead, six wounded in shooting at Carson City IHOP

[Updated at 4:18 p.m.]

[Updated at 4:18 p.m.] Five of the nine people who were shot Tuesday were members of the National Guard, a spokesperson told CNN affiliate KRNV. Two were killed and the other three are being treated in area hospitals.

[Updated at 2:18 p.m.] At least two of the victims killed at a shooting in a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant were military members who were wearing their uniforms, Chuck Allen with the Nevada Highway Patrol said Tuesday.

Police were still looking into the shooter's possible motive, Allen said, but officials were taking precautions in case military personnel were specifically targeted.

"When you have people in uniform randomly targeted ... we take that seriously," Allen said.

Heightened security measures are in effect in military bases in northern Nevada, affiliate KRNV reported, citing a National Guard spokesperson. The restaurant is located about three miles from Nevada National Guard headquarters, so it would not be unusual for service members to be eating there, the spokesperson added.

[Updated at 2:10 p.m.] Three people were killed and six others were wounded Tuesday in a shooting at a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant, police said.

Those six victims did not include the shooter, who police said turned a gun on himself.

It "appears its going to be difficult for him to survive," Ken Furlong with the Carson City's Sheriff's Office said about the gunman.

"He was still breathing," he added.

Furlong said that currently the situation appears to be contained to the one strip mall.

"Right now it appears as though there was one shooter," Furlong said. "There does not appear to be safety concerns outside of this area."

Furlong confirmed reports that a semi-automatic weapon was used during the shooting. Some of the victims "appeared to be military folks," he said.

Officials are still investigating any possible motive.

[Updated at 1:48 p.m.] One person has been confirmed dead after a shooting at a an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, police have told The Reno Gazette-Journal.

Lt. Rob Van Diest of the Reno Police Department also told the paper that eight people have been transported to the hospital.

[Posted at 1:46 p.m.] Seven people were shot after a man walked up to an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, and shot a man on a motorcycle before walking inside the restaurant and opening fire, The Reno Gazette-Journal is reporting.

The owner of a store in the same shopping mall told the newspaper that he saw a man wearing a red shirt and black shorts pull up to the store in his blue minivan, take out a rifle and shoot a man on a motorcycle. The man then walked into the IHOP and began firing, the owner, Ralph Swagler, told the Gazette-Journal.

After shooting inside the IHOP, Swagler told the paper that the shooter then turned his gun to his store and began firing. He then pointed toward an H&R Block in the same mall and shot again.

CNN affiliate KNRV reports it is being told other nearby businesses are on lockdown.

Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command spokesman Chuck Allen told CNN his agency is assisting the Carson City Sheriff’s office at the scene but offered no more details

CNN affiliate KOLO said there were reports that the shooter was "taken down," but officials could not confirm that detail.

KOLO reported that at least two women and a man were airlifted from the location. At least one other victim was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Witnesses report hearing a semi-automatic weapon

You want the wild, wild west., then come to the great state of Montana. You can still today, carry a gun in plain view on your person in the state of Montana. There is NO law that says, you cannot carry a firearm in public and in plain view, except for a state or federal government building. It's still the old wild west or as we call it.., "Cowboy western law.." in the state of Montana. The fine is so low for carrying a firearm in a state of federal building in Montana, that it is somewhat ridiculous. Mike in Montana

The narcissistic "hippy generation," no accountability, no morals, mental defectives treated as "citizens" instead of being lock-up in asylums like they once were, new age teachers, "do your own thing." All the idiot mantras and crap that has contributed to a culture of "me first, or no one!" where you can't just kill yourself if you have problems, you have to take them with you because "they" are responsible for your lot in life. Where is Darwin when you need him? I know, thwarted by socialist policies...

Just to clarify; by hippy generation I was actually referring to the children of the rotten, degenerate generation we now see committing these acts. Most of these lunatics are in their late 30's to early 40's, which makes them the "spawn" of that worthless group.

Amen! How many more would have been wounded in England recently if the rioters and cops had guns. We need to be saved from ourselves because we all fall short – unfortunately, it's the ones who need to learn this lesson most that keep pushing to keep dangerous guns on our streets.

Yeah okay, go ahead and trust your "Government" while I and many others will not. I've even been told by police officers you're nuts if you don't carry. The Government is NOT our nanny or protector. It is up to US, WE THE PEOPLE to defend our sovereignty and integrity as a nation. Our Founding Fathers would be rolling over in their graves if they heard what you think.

You are one of the nitwit liberals who ban certain guns because they look or their names sound scary. A nutcase with a pump shotgun loaded with buckshot will will kill far more people than someone with a semi-auto (doesn't matter if they are a regular or assault rifle, the effect is the same, because they aren't full auto, which are illegal) rifle because it takes no skill to use one when it can spray a deadly pattern almost like a machine gun.

    • Huh?

By that logic we should remove all cars from the roads. Many more automobile accidents cause deaths than gun violence. In fact, drunk drivers kill more people every year (about 10,000 more). Please come up with a better argument to bash the 2nd Amendment with.

How do you know Jesus wasn't like david koresh? Jesus mirrors other gods in history, only he is younger historically.

The only thing that keeps the government from tyranny, is gun ownership. Don't forget that, like you did the men and women who died for not only that; but the freedom for you to say that. What you say is borderline treason.

I agree with Jimpa. Military-style weapons are not commonly used for self-protection (You're really going to carry around an AK-47 in case someone tries to mug you?). Even those handguns that can pierce bulletproof vests shouldn't be sold to the public.
Doomguy, please ask the people of Mexico and pretty much all South America how this is working out for them. hint: It's not.

@ DaveM: " if nobody had a gun, no one would get shot." It is hard to argue with a hypothetical especially because that will never happen. Tell that to the unarmed Mexicans who have stricter gun laws but are far less safe. The causes of crime are not availability of firearms and criminals will always be able to buy firearms—they have the will and the money. Would more people carrying reduce crime? The data suggests that states with more liberal firearms laws and more carrying do have less crime, but they are also less populated. If we could just ban people, crime would end. Further restricting firearms won't do it—it hasn't in Mexico.

Why do the anit-gun nuts always seem to jump on incidents of crazy individuals using a gun as a means to spew their hate. Yet when someone defends themselves with one and prevents their family from being chopped to pieces we hear nothing.

Even funnier if you look at the greater picture your chances of being killed in a shooting like this are slim to none. On the other hand your chance of being killed by other daily activities such as driving are much, much higher. The driving tests are a joke, they allow kids to drive at 16 which is ridiculous, idiots going slow in the fast lane on their phones, hit and runs, half blind elderly people, the list goes on yet not much is done...

I can only relate to peoples fear of guns to how people tend to fear what they don't understand. Just like some groups are racist, anti-gay, etc...the anti-gun crowd are just as bad!!!

If this man didn't have a gun these people would not have been shot. Guns are for cowards. I'd much rather he went in wielding a knife or trying to punch people with his fist – at least then those people could have run, stayed at a safe distance, or fought back. Without guns this wouldn't have happened. Period.

You don't shoot someone while cleaning your gun. At that point the gun is disassembled and cannot fire. If you have a loaded gun, safety off, finger on the trigger, then you are not cleaning a gun you are shooting a gun. If you have an AD (accidental discharge) you need to re-learn muzzle and trigger discipline and gun safety. OR you shouldn't have a gun to begin with

Yes, this is not a gun issue. And it's not about the military or politics.

This is about the rampant and ever-increasing condition of mental illness, and the fact that society has completely turned its back on this issue.

There are tens of thousands of insane lunatics who are left to wander the streets, sleep and deficate in alleys, and eat out of trash bins.

As a society, we are merely inviting this kind of tragedy.

Careful, it almost looks like you're suggesting getting these people help ... which would suggest that people who don't work (for example: people with mental illness who are prone to psychotic breaks) should have access to mental health treatment ... but they don't work ... so we'd have to have a national health care system put in place ... so that these people don't kill others. Huh, look at that, I think we just made a case for National Health Care.
