Three dead, six wounded in shooting at Carson City IHOP

[Updated at 4:18 p.m.]

[Updated at 4:18 p.m.] Five of the nine people who were shot Tuesday were members of the National Guard, a spokesperson told CNN affiliate KRNV. Two were killed and the other three are being treated in area hospitals.

[Updated at 2:18 p.m.] At least two of the victims killed at a shooting in a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant were military members who were wearing their uniforms, Chuck Allen with the Nevada Highway Patrol said Tuesday.

Police were still looking into the shooter's possible motive, Allen said, but officials were taking precautions in case military personnel were specifically targeted.

"When you have people in uniform randomly targeted ... we take that seriously," Allen said.

Heightened security measures are in effect in military bases in northern Nevada, affiliate KRNV reported, citing a National Guard spokesperson. The restaurant is located about three miles from Nevada National Guard headquarters, so it would not be unusual for service members to be eating there, the spokesperson added.

[Updated at 2:10 p.m.] Three people were killed and six others were wounded Tuesday in a shooting at a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant, police said.

Those six victims did not include the shooter, who police said turned a gun on himself.

It "appears its going to be difficult for him to survive," Ken Furlong with the Carson City's Sheriff's Office said about the gunman.

"He was still breathing," he added.

Furlong said that currently the situation appears to be contained to the one strip mall.

"Right now it appears as though there was one shooter," Furlong said. "There does not appear to be safety concerns outside of this area."

Furlong confirmed reports that a semi-automatic weapon was used during the shooting. Some of the victims "appeared to be military folks," he said.

Officials are still investigating any possible motive.

[Updated at 1:48 p.m.] One person has been confirmed dead after a shooting at a an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, police have told The Reno Gazette-Journal.

Lt. Rob Van Diest of the Reno Police Department also told the paper that eight people have been transported to the hospital.

[Posted at 1:46 p.m.] Seven people were shot after a man walked up to an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, and shot a man on a motorcycle before walking inside the restaurant and opening fire, The Reno Gazette-Journal is reporting.

The owner of a store in the same shopping mall told the newspaper that he saw a man wearing a red shirt and black shorts pull up to the store in his blue minivan, take out a rifle and shoot a man on a motorcycle. The man then walked into the IHOP and began firing, the owner, Ralph Swagler, told the Gazette-Journal.

After shooting inside the IHOP, Swagler told the paper that the shooter then turned his gun to his store and began firing. He then pointed toward an H&R Block in the same mall and shot again.

CNN affiliate KNRV reports it is being told other nearby businesses are on lockdown.

Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command spokesman Chuck Allen told CNN his agency is assisting the Carson City Sheriff’s office at the scene but offered no more details

CNN affiliate KOLO said there were reports that the shooter was "taken down," but officials could not confirm that detail.

KOLO reported that at least two women and a man were airlifted from the location. At least one other victim was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Another "victory" for the gun lords and their spokesgroup, the NRA. Criminals have no better friend than the NRA.

Criminals carry weapons and commit horrible crimes reguardless of the law. Had there been one legal CCW carrier in the resturant the situation would have ended fast with less casualties.

I say we ban all vehicles. Cars, trucks, motorcycles, etc. They kill more people in America than all of the guns combined. Ohh, and think of the side benefits. We can cut the military waaaay back. No more wars for oil will be needed once the cars are gone. Down with all the evil cars before some car loving nut mows down another family.

Nice try, but how many miinutes each day is a car used versus how many minutes is a firearm used? Also, what reason do you have to use a gun? Not much it can do except kill. Of course, the issue here isn't about banning guns, it's about banning the mentally incompetent from owning a gun. But we can't have that, now can we?

We should also ban people who have only a high school education from voting.

Oh please. If you seriously can't see the difference between a car which sometimes results in deaths and an instrument which is created for the sole purpose and use of killing then you shouldn't even be talking. Otherwise, stop spouting silly, NRA, straw man drivel.

      Agree.

Total American deaths due to car accidents from 1975-2010 = 1,558,386 (source: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration)

Total American deaths due to Revolutionary War + War of 1812 + Mexican American War + Civil War + Spanish American War + Philippene American War + World War I + World War II + Korean War + Vietnam War + Gulf War + War on Terror = 1,311,739 (Multiple sources, but pretty easily confirmable...)

Cars in 36 years have killed more than every major war the US has engaged in EVER.

Gun deaths are meaningless, statistically speaking.

A car can not be hidden in your pockets. Guns sole purpose is to kill people.
      Thanks, but not thanks.

You go Pete, think that through. Cars were not just made to drive to and from work, but rather a tool to get you somewhere or to carry things. Same with guns, guns were not made to kill people, they are made to expel a projectile. Now, that same projectile can be used for paper targets, steel targets, wood, and even to defend yourself from animals, people, etc. Think it through Pete, I know it's hard, but if you try you can think!

Yes, in Oregon we let criminally insane folks walk in neighborhoods unsupervised (except by an unarmed aide) and let them make unmonitored phone calls, so they can escape. We are so liberal and humane in Oregon. A'int it thrillin'

Hmm, letting a population of people known to suffer from PTSD and have higher than normal suicide levels carry a gun with them at all times? That couldn't have unintended consequences or anything. You people have the dumbest ideas in the comments, without fail, every post.

Totally agree with Big Paulie, wouldn't be surprised if the guy who precisely shot and killed all these people wasn't trained to do so in a US military boot camp. I guess if everyone other idiot on here is going to make assumptions, why not just throw that into the mix.

Seeing as how there were two fully-dressed Service members, I do not doubt that justice will be found and delt out with a steel hand; however, as I am also in the Service, I am sad to lose two brethern who were randomly targeted in America. These two fought for Americans, gave up their freedom(s) for Americans, and THIS random act was how Americans showed the two Soldiers (IN UNIFORM) how much they are appreciated.

I grieve with the families and I hope that the cracks and bruises from this Horror story heal quickly.

Why is no one expressing sympathy for the victims of this senseless shooting? My heart goes out to those who were killed and my prayers go out to the wounded. Our military should not have to worry about being shot or killed in their own country.

Lets make absolutely certain we spend all our tax dollars to keep this piece of crap animal alive so some "out from under a rock" digusting lawyer can sue the police for not attending to the shooter faster. Or better yet how about a movie of the week or a trash magazine piece written by someone who wasn't even there. This is a tragedy of epic proportions and should be treated as such.
