Three dead, six wounded in shooting at Carson City IHOP

[Updated at 4:18 p.m.]

[Updated at 4:18 p.m.] Five of the nine people who were shot Tuesday were members of the National Guard, a spokesperson told CNN affiliate KRNV. Two were killed and the other three are being treated in area hospitals.

[Updated at 2:18 p.m.] At least two of the victims killed at a shooting in a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant were military members who were wearing their uniforms, Chuck Allen with the Nevada Highway Patrol said Tuesday.

Police were still looking into the shooter's possible motive, Allen said, but officials were taking precautions in case military personnel were specifically targeted.

"When you have people in uniform randomly targeted ... we take that seriously," Allen said.

Heightened security measures are in effect in military bases in northern Nevada, affiliate KRNV reported, citing a National Guard spokesperson. The restaurant is located about three miles from Nevada National Guard headquarters, so it would not be unusual for service members to be eating there, the spokesperson added.

[Updated at 2:10 p.m.] Three people were killed and six others were wounded Tuesday in a shooting at a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant, police said.

Those six victims did not include the shooter, who police said turned a gun on himself.

It "appears its going to be difficult for him to survive," Ken Furlong with the Carson City's Sheriff's Office said about the gunman.

"He was still breathing," he added.

Furlong said that currently the situation appears to be contained to the one strip mall.

"Right now it appears as though there was one shooter," Furlong said. "There does not appear to be safety concerns outside of this area."

Furlong confirmed reports that a semi-automatic weapon was used during the shooting. Some of the victims "appeared to be military folks," he said.

Officials are still investigating any possible motive.

[Updated at 1:48 p.m.] One person has been confirmed dead after a shooting at a an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, police have told The Reno Gazette-Journal.

Lt. Rob Van Diest of the Reno Police Department also told the paper that eight people have been transported to the hospital.

[Posted at 1:46 p.m.] Seven people were shot after a man walked up to an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, and shot a man on a motorcycle before walking inside the restaurant and opening fire, The Reno Gazette-Journal is reporting.

The owner of a store in the same shopping mall told the newspaper that he saw a man wearing a red shirt and black shorts pull up to the store in his blue minivan, take out a rifle and shoot a man on a motorcycle. The man then walked into the IHOP and began firing, the owner, Ralph Swagler, told the Gazette-Journal.

After shooting inside the IHOP, Swagler told the paper that the shooter then turned his gun to his store and began firing. He then pointed toward an H&R Block in the same mall and shot again.

CNN affiliate KNRV reports it is being told other nearby businesses are on lockdown.

Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command spokesman Chuck Allen told CNN his agency is assisting the Carson City Sheriff’s office at the scene but offered no more details

CNN affiliate KOLO said there were reports that the shooter was "taken down," but officials could not confirm that detail.

KOLO reported that at least two women and a man were airlifted from the location. At least one other victim was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Witnesses report hearing a semi-automatic weapon

Where in the New testament does it talk about Jesus commanding his disciples to kill?. Any Christian that takes part in killing, is missing the meaning of Christianity. So anyone who uses Christianity as a scapegoat, does not want to take responsibility for their own actions. No where in the New testament does it talk about committing acts of violence towards your fellow brethren. Love you all 1

At Columbine-was a complete surprise. If the military had been allowed to carry weapons at the ceremony in Texas-Thing would have gone much differently. Guns are predominately not allowed in public-Your seeing the results as here. If this idiiot knew others were armed in that IHOP-he may have second guessed his idea of shooting up the place.

And Great Brittain has more stabbings, particularly in Glasgow. Keep in mind that the US has a population of over 300 million people. that a three with nine zeros after it. A lot more than any of your european or south american countries. This guy was most likely disturbed. Probably because American also puts more people on anti depressants, has worse chemicals in foods, and less zoning rules for homes near cell towers than those other countries too. The point is that if they guy didn't have a gun, he would have done it with a knife. If we banned those, he would have done it with a food tray. Look at the London riots, they didn't have guns and look at the wide spread carnage those hoodlums caused. Guns are a tool, a tool to launch a projectile at a target with the intent of putting a hole in it. What you use it for is up to you.

If you do a study, you will find that towns where more citizens are activally using their 2nd ammendment rights are safer. But your not interested in that, you just want to say that this situtation would have NEVER possibly happened if the man had access to any other weapon besides a gun.

I bet you also blame the police and/or government for not protecting the people too right?

bad analogy. with an axe or a chainsaw, you have to get close to the people. not so much with a gun

      September 6, 2011 at 3:46 pm | Report abuse |
    • Jason K

Rick, last I checked you could throw axes or even chainsaws if you got creative. With some PVC pipe, some nails and creativity you can turn a NERF gun into a deadly nailgun that can shoot with decent accuracy up to 50 ft. He could have also used a bottle of alcohol with a rag and a match and caused way more havoc. Or maybe made a pipebomb. He could have driven a truck through the restaurant at highway speeds and killed a lot more people that way too.

But he didn't, he chose a gun. The problem is not the gun, the problem is that this man for whatever reason decided to kill several people and then to attempt to take his own life.

Instead of b!tching about guns you should be happy he chose that instead of a handful of molotovs. By most of the anti-gun people's logic on here, we'd then have to call for a ban on combustible fluids, rags, matches or lighters, and bottles.

i love how many people blame this on our facination with the 2nd amendment and how if gun control was tighter the world would be safer. Its the exact opposite. The only those with the sole intent of harming others would have them and average joe wouldnt be able to protect his family. Gun education is whats needed, not banning.

Another victory for the NRA... Isn't about time we said no to all the massive amounts of weapons on every street in America. Do we really need 30 round clips, military assult weappons, 50 cal sniper rifles. to do what? Hunt? Protect your home? The amount of shooting in AZ has sky rocketed in direct proportion to the GOP move to put a gun in every hand in this state. The NRA is not done, they want laws on the books allowing college students to carry guns on campus here. How many shootings must we endur? How many militiary, police officers, congress men/women, innocent bystandards are are enough blood for these people???

    • Wzrd1

Actually, I personally know people who use those .50 caliber rifle systems that you call sniper systems in compet i tion shooting matches. So, because of criminals, we'll get rid of the only weapon not ever used in a crime?
Without those magazines and "assault rifles", I can't fire in compet i tion against the military, which I do still occasionally participate in.
So, we'll ban an entire sport over criminals.
Then, we'll ban assembly and free speech over militia groups that want to overthrow the government.
Then, we'll repeal the fourth amendment, criminals hide behind it.

      September 6, 2011 at 3:47 pm | Report abuse |
    • Really People?

The 2nd amendment does not guarantee anyone the right to hunt..... it ensures that citizens have the arms necessary to defend themselves and if all hell breaks loose, to form a militia. people kill people, guns do not.
