Three dead, six wounded in shooting at Carson City IHOP

[Updated at 4:18 p.m.]

[Updated at 4:18 p.m.] Five of the nine people who were shot Tuesday were members of the National Guard, a spokesperson told CNN affiliate KRNV. Two were killed and the other three are being treated in area hospitals.

[Updated at 2:18 p.m.] At least two of the victims killed at a shooting in a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant were military members who were wearing their uniforms, Chuck Allen with the Nevada Highway Patrol said Tuesday.

Police were still looking into the shooter's possible motive, Allen said, but officials were taking precautions in case military personnel were specifically targeted.

"When you have people in uniform randomly targeted ... we take that seriously," Allen said.

Heightened security measures are in effect in military bases in northern Nevada, affiliate KRNV reported, citing a National Guard spokesperson. The restaurant is located about three miles from Nevada National Guard headquarters, so it would not be unusual for service members to be eating there, the spokesperson added.

[Updated at 2:10 p.m.] Three people were killed and six others were wounded Tuesday in a shooting at a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant, police said.

Those six victims did not include the shooter, who police said turned a gun on himself.

It "appears its going to be difficult for him to survive," Ken Furlong with the Carson City's Sheriff's Office said about the gunman.

"He was still breathing," he added.

Furlong said that currently the situation appears to be contained to the one strip mall.

"Right now it appears as though there was one shooter," Furlong said. "There does not appear to be safety concerns outside of this area."

Furlong confirmed reports that a semi-automatic weapon was used during the shooting. Some of the victims "appeared to be military folks," he said.

Officials are still investigating any possible motive.

[Updated at 1:48 p.m.] One person has been confirmed dead after a shooting at a an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, police have told The Reno Gazette-Journal.

Lt. Rob Van Diest of the Reno Police Department also told the paper that eight people have been transported to the hospital.

[Posted at 1:46 p.m.] Seven people were shot after a man walked up to an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, and shot a man on a motorcycle before walking inside the restaurant and opening fire, The Reno Gazette-Journal is reporting.

The owner of a store in the same shopping mall told the newspaper that he saw a man wearing a red shirt and black shorts pull up to the store in his blue minivan, take out a rifle and shoot a man on a motorcycle. The man then walked into the IHOP and began firing, the owner, Ralph Swagler, told the Gazette-Journal.

After shooting inside the IHOP, Swagler told the paper that the shooter then turned his gun to his store and began firing. He then pointed toward an H&R Block in the same mall and shot again.

CNN affiliate KNRV reports it is being told other nearby businesses are on lockdown.

Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command spokesman Chuck Allen told CNN his agency is assisting the Carson City Sheriff’s office at the scene but offered no more details

CNN affiliate KOLO said there were reports that the shooter was "taken down," but officials could not confirm that detail.

KOLO reported that at least two women and a man were airlifted from the location. At least one other victim was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Witnesses report hearing a semi-automatic weapon

How can you people say that guns aren't the issue? Of course it takes a psycho to carry out something like this, but the point is that the accessibility of guns makes it too easy. It'd take a pretty crazy person to set off a nuclear attack as well, so are we going to argue that we shouldn't have regulation on uranium. After all the, the nuclear bomb isn't the problem, it's just a few crazies misusing them. Unfortunately, we've gotten to the point where legislation is useless against the problem. We certainly can't ban guns since criminals have a unique tendency to not pay laws much attention. Nevertheless, we would be better off as a society if NO one had guns. No reasonable person can intelligently argue against that. (Meaning the global society.) Fact of the matter is most law abiding citizens want guns for selfish reasons. They feel some higher right to them so they don't want them taken, even if doing so would be beneficial.

Even if you ban guns, someone will find a way to get them. Besides you could just use a knife or bomb instead. People will find ways to kill people if they really want to.

Nice thought....... but very naive....there are bad people out there and in your world only the bad people would have guns.......try pragmatism vs. emotion...oh well.....

There were 30+ shootings in New York City this past weekend. Banning guns didn't do any good did it? As far as your "global" comment, you are boviosuly a liberal who views things in terms of a global society, which is dangerous fantasy

But reducing accessibility to guns makes that a more difficult proposition. Aren't guns extraordinarily convenient ways to kill people? Yes that are, and so, gun violence will continue to be rampant until something is done.

You're right; ideally there would be no weapons, and no anger that would inspire the use of them. The truth of the matter, though, is that there are those who will use (and acquire, regardless of the law) weapons. The police do the best they can, but when seconds count, they're just minutes away...and the courts have already deemed that they don't have a *responsibility* for your safety. You do. As of now, for this story, we don't know if this killed obtained these firearms legally or what. I'll just say that I agree in wishing that the ready availability of weapons were not a necessity, but I find it better than the alternative of needing them and being unable to obtain the means of self-defense.

If people who have gone through the proper training with guns had theirs @ the IHOP, I am sure the outcome could have been a bit different. I am not a proponent of just having a gun to have one, but these are the reasons why I have one. God Bless all who were shot in such a senseless act.

Guns are not the issue. Even if you could ban guns (which you can't) WHO CAN ENFORCE IT?!? You may as well ban cars too. and you may have a easier time enforcing a ban on cars. GUNS ARE HERE TO STAY. Don't worry you will get over it. IHOP still has the best waffles too 😉

Law abiding citizens want to own guns for selfish reasons? Care to list any? I own them because I like target shooting. I own them because I can protect myself if someone broke into my home with the intent to harm me. Since you already acknowledge that "law abiding citizens" own guns, exactly what would be the benefit of taking guns away from them? In other words, I am a responsible gun owner and with the exception of the gun in my nightstand for protection, all are locked in a gun safe, not accessible to anyone. Help me understand what "benefit" I would realize by handing in my guns?

Jay, why do you anti-private-gun-ownership types always mention non-related topics when trying to explain your viewpoints? I guess it must be because you don't have enough facts or a valid platform upon which you make your 'argument'.

Indeed, as Xman alludes to herein, the legality of gun ownership leads to convenience of possession, which allows otherwise law abiding citizens to go on rampages. Possession of a firearm if gun ownership is illegal on the other hand requires more effort and thus provides the countermanding force which is useful against emotional outbursts which lead to rampages like these.

If you take away their right to own a gun, they'll still find a way to own one anyway. If you take away the guns altogether they'll become more creative and effective in the way they cause death and violence. i.e. bombs, poison etc.

MOre creative? You dont seem to understand. Guns were the creativity. 100 years ago people killed people with knives and poisons. Someone got creative and created the gun. You really think someone dumb enough to think a gun is good would be creative enough to make something even more powerful? clearly you have never been to the southern states.
