Three dead, six wounded in shooting at Carson City IHOP

[Updated at 4:18 p.m.]

[Updated at 4:18 p.m.] Five of the nine people who were shot Tuesday were members of the National Guard, a spokesperson told CNN affiliate KRNV. Two were killed and the other three are being treated in area hospitals.

[Updated at 2:18 p.m.] At least two of the victims killed at a shooting in a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant were military members who were wearing their uniforms, Chuck Allen with the Nevada Highway Patrol said Tuesday.

Police were still looking into the shooter's possible motive, Allen said, but officials were taking precautions in case military personnel were specifically targeted.

"When you have people in uniform randomly targeted ... we take that seriously," Allen said.

Heightened security measures are in effect in military bases in northern Nevada, affiliate KRNV reported, citing a National Guard spokesperson. The restaurant is located about three miles from Nevada National Guard headquarters, so it would not be unusual for service members to be eating there, the spokesperson added.

[Updated at 2:10 p.m.] Three people were killed and six others were wounded Tuesday in a shooting at a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant, police said.

Those six victims did not include the shooter, who police said turned a gun on himself.

It "appears its going to be difficult for him to survive," Ken Furlong with the Carson City's Sheriff's Office said about the gunman.

"He was still breathing," he added.

Furlong said that currently the situation appears to be contained to the one strip mall.

"Right now it appears as though there was one shooter," Furlong said. "There does not appear to be safety concerns outside of this area."

Furlong confirmed reports that a semi-automatic weapon was used during the shooting. Some of the victims "appeared to be military folks," he said.

Officials are still investigating any possible motive.

[Updated at 1:48 p.m.] One person has been confirmed dead after a shooting at a an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, police have told The Reno Gazette-Journal.

Lt. Rob Van Diest of the Reno Police Department also told the paper that eight people have been transported to the hospital.

[Posted at 1:46 p.m.] Seven people were shot after a man walked up to an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, and shot a man on a motorcycle before walking inside the restaurant and opening fire, The Reno Gazette-Journal is reporting.

The owner of a store in the same shopping mall told the newspaper that he saw a man wearing a red shirt and black shorts pull up to the store in his blue minivan, take out a rifle and shoot a man on a motorcycle. The man then walked into the IHOP and began firing, the owner, Ralph Swagler, told the Gazette-Journal.

After shooting inside the IHOP, Swagler told the paper that the shooter then turned his gun to his store and began firing. He then pointed toward an H&R Block in the same mall and shot again.

CNN affiliate KNRV reports it is being told other nearby businesses are on lockdown.

Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command spokesman Chuck Allen told CNN his agency is assisting the Carson City Sheriff’s office at the scene but offered no more details

CNN affiliate KOLO said there were reports that the shooter was "taken down," but officials could not confirm that detail.

KOLO reported that at least two women and a man were airlifted from the location. At least one other victim was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

i cant believe how we can turn a tragic story like this into a political debate. FYI, while u all using this story as an opportunity to express whatever thoughts you have in ur wasted brains, someone is mourning the tragic death of their father, brother, uncle, son or husband thanks to an insane person whose actions are just as cruel as your thoughts. too sad you all come here to create this selfish forum instead of praying for the victims, their families and love ones. may god bless their souls, protect their families and the people of Carson. Amen.

Perhaps the cruelty lies in not thinking of others in the future having the same fate, because of politics.

Now, imagine if everyone was packing instead of waiting for cops who don't even have to protect and serve the public anymore...he would be taken down after the first shot, period.

I agree and support open and concealed carry. You used the term "everyone paking" Not everyone will ever be cuz some don't want to, are afraid of guns or have some other reason. right to carry may still have meant no one in the area was in possession of a weapon and the same fate would have resuted.

If this incident had occurred in any other country but the US, there would be many fatuous and racist posts on here by now. I will say this slowly for those who are blinkered – the US is no better and in some cases worse than the rest of the world when it comes to murderous low-life.

So Nevada allows conceal carrying of handguns. Why is it that when such an incident occurs no one shoots the guy on a rampage? Is there no one around who has a CCW? If so any do we need CCW? It just makes no sense that someone can shoot a few people without anyone shooting back at them. With the NRA screaming that we need CCW laws to be liberal why is there no one defending themselves?

Why can't we just admit it? We won't give pause until the blood is flowing.

It surprises me that so many have a lack of understanding about guns and crime. Twenty-three people died at the Luby's in Killeen,TX, while Suzanna Hupp could have stopped it, had she not left her gun in her car do to the fact she did not want to break gun laws, at the time. She also lost both her parents that fateful day. She has gone on to defend our rights and do something about our laws. If the gun laws had been different then, perhaps only a couple people would have lost their lives. It is the armed law abiding citizen that can make a difference at times like these. England has banned all guns and now has a violent crime rate that is more than double that of the US. When we are unarmed we become victims.

One bystander said he had is gun with him, but he couldn't figure out where the shooter was in time to do anything. The same thing with the Gifford shooting.

People really don't like each other anymore. One manifestation is Mr. Froot Loop at the iHOP. Another, milder consequence is the CNN comments section.

Our society needs a collective trip to the woodshed.

My fellow Americans the antigovernment sentiments in America is real, as a reformist I can tell you that America society is braking down comunity by cominity and household by household, people are subordinated policed controlled burdened taxed and manipulated. There are many Americans whom have been impoverished, and struggling in the economic conditions that each elected government has created since civil war. My fellow Americans on our next election don't vote in protest, only then America can start anew!!! Buy my book when I finish it.

Some group will ALWAYS be defended. That's a huge part of what's wrong with our Country and the main culprit for the devolution of our society! Every d-bag has a "representative group". No one can say anything without being condemned and drummed out of their job/community if they have the gumption to speak the truth or reveal some fact. This is no longer a "melting pot", but a Country filled with lobbyists content on destroying the rights of the individual. Shameful.

As a self-made reformist I can tell you that America society is braking down community by community, household by household. People are subordinated, policed, controlled, burdened, taxed and manipulated. There are many Americans whom have been impoverished, and many are struggling to provide for their families in the economic conditions, as a result of bad policies. that each elected government has created since civil war. Americans working class are now the poor and minority class. My fellow Americans on our next election day don’t go out to the pools to vote in protest, only then America can start anew!!!
