Three dead, six wounded in shooting at Carson City IHOP

[Updated at 4:18 p.m.]

[Updated at 4:18 p.m.] Five of the nine people who were shot Tuesday were members of the National Guard, a spokesperson told CNN affiliate KRNV. Two were killed and the other three are being treated in area hospitals.

[Updated at 2:18 p.m.] At least two of the victims killed at a shooting in a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant were military members who were wearing their uniforms, Chuck Allen with the Nevada Highway Patrol said Tuesday.

Police were still looking into the shooter's possible motive, Allen said, but officials were taking precautions in case military personnel were specifically targeted.

"When you have people in uniform randomly targeted ... we take that seriously," Allen said.

Heightened security measures are in effect in military bases in northern Nevada, affiliate KRNV reported, citing a National Guard spokesperson. The restaurant is located about three miles from Nevada National Guard headquarters, so it would not be unusual for service members to be eating there, the spokesperson added.

[Updated at 2:10 p.m.] Three people were killed and six others were wounded Tuesday in a shooting at a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant, police said.

Those six victims did not include the shooter, who police said turned a gun on himself.

It "appears its going to be difficult for him to survive," Ken Furlong with the Carson City's Sheriff's Office said about the gunman.

"He was still breathing," he added.

Furlong said that currently the situation appears to be contained to the one strip mall.

"Right now it appears as though there was one shooter," Furlong said. "There does not appear to be safety concerns outside of this area."

Furlong confirmed reports that a semi-automatic weapon was used during the shooting. Some of the victims "appeared to be military folks," he said.

Officials are still investigating any possible motive.

[Updated at 1:48 p.m.] One person has been confirmed dead after a shooting at a an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, police have told The Reno Gazette-Journal.

Lt. Rob Van Diest of the Reno Police Department also told the paper that eight people have been transported to the hospital.

[Posted at 1:46 p.m.] Seven people were shot after a man walked up to an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, and shot a man on a motorcycle before walking inside the restaurant and opening fire, The Reno Gazette-Journal is reporting.

The owner of a store in the same shopping mall told the newspaper that he saw a man wearing a red shirt and black shorts pull up to the store in his blue minivan, take out a rifle and shoot a man on a motorcycle. The man then walked into the IHOP and began firing, the owner, Ralph Swagler, told the Gazette-Journal.

After shooting inside the IHOP, Swagler told the paper that the shooter then turned his gun to his store and began firing. He then pointed toward an H&R Block in the same mall and shot again.

CNN affiliate KNRV reports it is being told other nearby businesses are on lockdown.

Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command spokesman Chuck Allen told CNN his agency is assisting the Carson City Sheriff’s office at the scene but offered no more details

CNN affiliate KOLO said there were reports that the shooter was "taken down," but officials could not confirm that detail.

KOLO reported that at least two women and a man were airlifted from the location. At least one other victim was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

I don't think a lot of you know what "semi-automatic" even means.

And news flash for those of you screaming that we need to take all the guns away: Bad guys ignore laws. The only people you would disarm are those of us that follow the law. If making something illegal completely removes the damage caused then why do we still have such a huge drug problem?? It doesn't work.

I agree that taking guns away from citizens won't have much effect on our society... The prevalence of guns and the respect given to them and to the idea of solving our problems through conflict and violence is indicative of a sickness in our society that is much deeper.

Well, muhrvis. Since guns have been a part of American culture predating the Revolution, I guess you think that American society was always sick.

Please remember, as you hammer away at your own personal agendas and seek to use this tragedy as grist for your own political ideological mills, that innocent people have died this morning. They were our neighbors and our countrymen...they were someone's loved-ones. Their deaths should not be callously leveraged as if they died to illustrate your points.

So please have some respect for the dead and injured, as well as a community that is still reeling. There will be plenty of time for petty recriminations and poor attempts at dark humor later.

Idiot, we hear much more about crimes where people get shot for no apparent reason than people getting killed by someone defending themselves. GUNS suck and the gov't needs to have more control of them. Until this doesn't happen to one of your family members then you will be on the other side jerk. I hate guns!!!

Mrod, did it ever occur to you that bad news gets reported more often than good news?

Keep an open mind. How can you hate an inanimate object?

Mrod, one more point: You say "the gov't needs to have more control of them (guns)."

Since the police usually arrive AFTER a crime has been committed, what protection will the government give you when you are confronted by thugs? The police will be there, after the fact, after you've already had your gun-hating head kicked in.

I agree guns are safe. But what about people who have them. Are they safe?. Mentally sick people are also have guns with them in this country. Even If I have gun with me all the time, I still can not protect myself against a bad person who also has a gun. Safe Guns are unsafe in unfriendly communities all over America.

Just watch. After the corporate media demonizes gun rights for a while it will quietly come out that this guy was on some "anti depressant" or other mind altering drug. 9 times out of 10 that is the case in these random shootings.

You gun nuts, have a look at Singapore.

Carrying guns = illegal, there are no gun-shops
There is no place to buy ammo

Penalty for being caught with a gun => mandatory (the judge doesn't have a choice) death sentence
Penalty for murder, kidnapping, drug trafficking => mandatory death sentence
Penalty for carrying live ammo => death sentence

Gun crime (homicide) in last 40 years = 0

Banning guns and having severe penalty for anyone possessing them will ensure the problem solves itself in 10 years max

Do not compare a tiny country with US. There is no way a "no gun law" can be enforced here. Try enforcing mexican border first!

Different country. Different culture. There are millions of guns in the United States. Gun bans here would be impossible.

Singapore is also not known as being a place where civil liberties flourish. I guess it's OK if freedom means nothing to you. Just make sure that you flush the toilet after yourself when you are there, because there are heavy fines for failing to do so.

It always amazes me how eager people are to sacrifice freedom in exchange for an antiseptic, government-controlled environment and lifestyle.

Uh, check your facts sir. I don't even consider Wikipedia a fact source, but didn't want to take any time searching for you. If you'd read, it says there were 3 homicides by firearms as of 2000. And, it's not about being a gun-nut, it's about freedom. Do you think I'd change my mind if someone in my family was killed in that IHOP? No it would not change, people who can legally own guns should have that right. I'd be extremely upset if I was there and had some politician making a law that said that I could not defend myself and my family. If I could legally carry a gun I would in order to have the ability to protect myself and my family from people like this. And yeah, whoever said a baseball bat would work. Last time I checked, bullets move faster than a bat.

Any idea who is behind the NRA? It's the gun manufacturers using a propaganda machinet to ensure there are no barriers to them selling guns and making money. They actually want Obama re-elected because that got the fringe crowd so riled up that they've sold more guns during his presidency than were ever sold during a Repub presidency. Nice of the gun manufacturers making their billions to entice simple folks to ensure their wide-open market stays wide-open.
