[Updated at 4:18 p.m.] Five of the nine people who were shot Tuesday were members of the National Guard, a spokesperson told CNN affiliate KRNV. Two were killed and the other three are being treated in area hospitals.
[Updated at 2:18 p.m.] At least two of the victims killed at a shooting in a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant were military members who were wearing their uniforms, Chuck Allen with the Nevada Highway Patrol said Tuesday.
Police were still looking into the shooter's possible motive, Allen said, but officials were taking precautions in case military personnel were specifically targeted.
"When you have people in uniform randomly targeted ... we take that seriously," Allen said.
Heightened security measures are in effect in military bases in northern Nevada, affiliate KRNV reported, citing a National Guard spokesperson. The restaurant is located about three miles from Nevada National Guard headquarters, so it would not be unusual for service members to be eating there, the spokesperson added.
[Updated at 2:10 p.m.] Three people were killed and six others were wounded Tuesday in a shooting at a Carson City, Nevada, IHOP restaurant, police said.
Those six victims did not include the shooter, who police said turned a gun on himself.
It "appears its going to be difficult for him to survive," Ken Furlong with the Carson City's Sheriff's Office said about the gunman.
"He was still breathing," he added.
Furlong said that currently the situation appears to be contained to the one strip mall.
"Right now it appears as though there was one shooter," Furlong said. "There does not appear to be safety concerns outside of this area."
Furlong confirmed reports that a semi-automatic weapon was used during the shooting. Some of the victims "appeared to be military folks," he said.
Officials are still investigating any possible motive.
[Updated at 1:48 p.m.] One person has been confirmed dead after a shooting at a an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, police have told The Reno Gazette-Journal.
Lt. Rob Van Diest of the Reno Police Department also told the paper that eight people have been transported to the hospital.
[Posted at 1:46 p.m.] Seven people were shot after a man walked up to an IHOP in Carson City, Nevada, and shot a man on a motorcycle before walking inside the restaurant and opening fire, The Reno Gazette-Journal is reporting.
The owner of a store in the same shopping mall told the newspaper that he saw a man wearing a red shirt and black shorts pull up to the store in his blue minivan, take out a rifle and shoot a man on a motorcycle. The man then walked into the IHOP and began firing, the owner, Ralph Swagler, told the Gazette-Journal.
After shooting inside the IHOP, Swagler told the paper that the shooter then turned his gun to his store and began firing. He then pointed toward an H&R Block in the same mall and shot again.
CNN affiliate KNRV reports it is being told other nearby businesses are on lockdown.
Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command spokesman Chuck Allen told CNN his agency is assisting the Carson City Sheriff’s office at the scene but offered no more details
CNN affiliate KOLO said there were reports that the shooter was "taken down," but officials could not confirm that detail.
KOLO reported that at least two women and a man were airlifted from the location. At least one other victim was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Now THAT was interesting and something than CNN should REALLY be reporting on! Thanks!!!
So if two waitresses were killed in uniform, would they be taking precautions as well? Just for clarification, which groups being targeted would prompt for taking precautions?
MALMBORG. So stoned that I spelled my own name wrong! Pluck the duck, who have I got to lose?
Reggie, please move to Singapore if you like there way of life so much.
like any thing else that goes wrong in this world lets just blame the Muslims for this too.
I work in Singapore, so am speaking from an american's perspective in this place 🙂
Had I been in that restaurant it wouldn't have happened...as an ex military member who ALWAYS carries a concealed loaded weapon that fool would have been down within 5 seconds.
Not if the SOB walked up behind you and popped you in the head. All the concelaed weapons in the world won't help you if you are caught off guard...
Good job! Use a tragedy to pat yourself on the back and brag! "Self certified internet badazz"........
In England, which has strict gun control laws, massive widespread rioting recently broke out. It went on for about a week.
Only 5 people lost their lives - three of them due to an automobile accident.
So don't tell me "If criminals don't have guns, they'll just use something else."
how many people got assaulted and beat up. Yeah im all set with getting assaulted, flash mobs, riots. You attack me i will defend myself with deadly force if need be
You have to understand half of the US population want the right to be shot by a gun (statistically most likely a family member) because the founding fathers said we needed a well armed militia using muskets to defend the people. Of course this now means the founding fathers clearly meant to write semi-automatic weapons used by anyone but I digress, the same half tend towards believing the World is 6000 years old but you can't have everything.
I won't BS you—criminals would always prefer to have a gun.Criminals here have firearms and most were not obtained legally. More laws won't change that. Mexico has more restrictive firearms laws than the US and look who that has worked out. Britain has plenty of crime and, injuries, and knife murders. Most of the violence in the US has to do with drug dealers and gangs, and, like in Mexico, those two groups will get firearms regardless of local laws. They have the will and the money.
Hey everyone.....SamSkwirl thinks it's hysterical that two of our brave military personnel were killed today. Let's hear it for Sam! He's doosh bag of the year!
Don't believe he thinks it truly hysterical. But some find it offensive that the fact two victims were in the military made this crime somehow "worse?" The military are great, but they deserve no more reverence than teachers, firemen, or any other hardworking people. The almost religious devotion to the military is ridiculous, and comments like the one made in this story – that having it be people "in uniform" makes them really sit up and take notice, make me sick. And a lot of others, too. The same people who hold the military up on a not-always-deserved pedestal would be the first to call these folks freeloaders and lazy if they had not joined the military because it was the only job they could get.
@wakeup:
You forgot the Mexicans. Another convenient scapegoat.
"When you have people in uniform randomly targeted ... we take that seriously," Allen said.
The rest of time we just laugh it off and go back to the donut shop.....
Thanks, Norm. Exactly what I was trying to say. I found that statement hugely offensive.
Did he yell anything like . . . praise be . . . Jesus . . . Harry krishna . . . Moses . . Buddah . . . The Tea party or ................ Allah ?????
People should always be aware of their surroundings. You never know what nut ball is there. I see people not even aware of the person four feet from them in a supermarket. You may not be heavy at the time, but at least you can duck or take cover.
LAW'S need 2 b changed about shootings' when a person shoots some1 and if not 4 medical help they would have died that should be a capital offense (death b their justice) thats just my opionion but its thee only logical answer. weed out the lunatic's and maybe then sanity will happen 4 the human race.
dead soljerz ist always gut
Why aren't the CW folks EVER at tragic events like this? Arm-chair quarterbacking at it's best: "well, if I was there..." Well guess what? You weren't. You never are.
You can't even eat your pancakes without being shot at anymore, it's time everyone started packing heat so at anytime you can defend yourself.
That's stupid circular logic used by the NRA. By the same logic, if nobody had a gun, no one would get shot. if everyone had a gun, that would include a lot of mentally ill people. There would be shootouts everywhere. If you have a disagreement with a perfect stranger over a parking spot, why work it out? Just shoot 'em. I especially want every drunk SOB in a bar to have a weapon. Then we'd have a lot fewer drunk SOBs on the road...
