Officials trying to identify enslaved disabled workers rescued from brick kiln

Authorities in China are struggling to identify 30 people they rescued from illegal brick kilns where they were being enslaved and abused, state-run media reported Wednesday.

The officials are having a difficult time identifying some of the workers because at least 17 of them are disabled or have a mental illness, police told the state-run China Daily newspaper.

"Some of them can't even speak a whole sentence, and they don't act like normal people," Liu Weiming, deputy director of publicity in Zhumadian, where the workers were rescued, told the state-run paper. "Most are staying at a relief station because they can't remember where they are from."

The China Daily said that the scandal was exposed by the City Report TV channel who reported that workers were "abducted from streets and railway stations and then sold to bosses at brick kilns for 300 yuan to 500 yuan ($45 to $80)."

Bai Shasha, one of the rescued victims, said he and his father got lost in March and were abducted when several people with knives approached him. He said during the time he was enslaved at the kiln he was regularly beaten with bricks or whips, China Daily reported. Bai also said he and other workers were forced to work all day long without any rest, and then they all slept in cramped confines at night.

China Daily reported that Liu said two bosses and a supervisor were detained in relation to the case. One of the supervisors, age 14, is accused of beating workers with whips.

The incident is not the first in China. In 2007, 2009 and 2010 more than 1,500 people have been rescued from illegal brick kilns. An investigation in 2007 found that more than 53,000 workers at kilns were illegally employed, according to previous state-run media reports .

    Just One Question:

Which politician came up with the lame-brain idea of giving tax breaks to businesses that outsource American Jobs?

I really, really want to know....

By the way he also removed a lot of Enviro regulation and now the gulf is a mess and a lot of people can light their tap water on fire, from what was once good water wells. You can live with out oil you CANNOT live with out water.

deregulation and just look at business flourish! teabaggers must have a wet dream about this, of course as long as they dont have to do this them selves.

This is the place and the reason our loyal american companies are flocking to nations like this because it fattens the margin, and increases shareholder profit. just another dayat the office.

Bottom line.... China is a communist country and we are making them prosperous through our corporations partnering with them. It's almost traitorous. Bring the jobs home and pay a little more for quality, American made products. Restore the pride and workmanship and you'll see America prosper again. Corporations must sacrifice record profits in exchange for decent profits and a growing nation.

ya but its about PROFIT not anything else! not quality, or the fact we fight wars to protect these as you quite correctly pointed out traitorus companies, or jobs for americans, just profit, we have always been told if the government gets involved its communist, and thats all the politicians had to say to shut people up... just remember most politicians are owned by business lobbists. you can usually tell the ones that are not because the media gangs up on them they too are owned by corporate sponsership. Fox news is a mouth piece for big business and not a news agency.

"Corporations must sacrifice record profits in exchange for decent profits and a growing nation." vidkid...deep in their coffins the founding fathers of the Rockefellers, Getty's and Vanderbilts are rolling over in their graves by your statement. America and sacrifice profits in the same sentence is an oxymoron. Greed will never stop and it doesn't care about the state of any person whether intelligent or disabled. It is the driving mechanism for prosperity at any cost no matter what the damage and people seem to loose their minds behind it! It doesn't matter what country your talking about. The individuals (all who are involved and profitted from this act) who perpetrate such attrocities should be given a lobotomy and put to work in those same kilns while their families are forced to watch in horror.

Slaves don't give China an unfair advantage, your former political leaders do. They formed The Carlyle Group and sell oil to China from the Group's Caspian Basin holdings for 1/3 what we pay OPEC. get a clue. US gov. occupies afghanistan so this oil arrives in China without interference from the local Afghani's the US gov. calls "terrorists".

It is an oxymoron that the Chinese Authorities are concern about the workers. They just don't want their own abuses to looked at, so they found another abuser to put into the spot light.

14 year old supervisor, mentally disabled workers, people who can't make complete sentences, people who don't even know where they are from... sounds like the average makeup of any local Party leadership to me – what are they complaining about?

Abu: Old Story? It was reported on the same day that People's Daily reported it. Sure, it's not the first time this has happened, but you don't stop reporting on something simply because it has happened before.
