Officials confirm 'credible but unconfirmed' 9/11 threat

[Updated at 10:05 p.m. ET] New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters Thursday night that authorities are "taking additional precautions" given "new threat information" tied to the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

These measures include "vehicle checkpoints around the city," more bomb-sniffing dogs around the city, increased towing of illegally parked cars and greater police staffing, according to Kelly.

[Updated at 9:56 p.m. ET] New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters Thursday night that while additional police will be deployed around the city amid reports of an "unconfirmed" terror threat to the city on September 11, "there's no reason for any of the rest of us to change ... our daily routines."

In an earlier statement, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged residents to be "cautious and aware" while adding, "There is no reason to panic." And D.C. Metro Police Chief Cathy Lanier said that authorities in the nation's capital are preparing for 9/11 anniversary events and noted "maintaining a certain sense of unpredictability is essential to the success of any security plan."

[Updated at 9:53 p.m. ET] U.S. officials said Thursday evening they have "specific, credible but unconfirmed" information about a potential threat against the United States coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

"We have received credible information very recently about a possible plot directed at the homeland that seems to be focused on New York and Washington, D.C.," a senior administration official told CNN Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr.

The official said the plot was believed to involve three individuals, including a U.S. citizen. U.S. officials believed the threat was a vehicle laden with explosives, but "the intelligence picture is not completely formed," the official said. "Not enough is known about the potential operatives and their plotting."

Another source gave CNN conflicting information about possible details of the threat.

A senior law enforcement official involved in briefings about the matter told CNN Justice Department Producer Terry Frieden that his best information is that the three individuals had not yet entered the United States.

The information came in around noon Wednesday, one official said.

A senior federal law enforcement official intimately involved in counterterrorism efforts told CNN Chief National Correspondent John King authorities "aren't sure if this is or real or just chatter." The official confirmed the threat was vehicle-related.

Officials said they were taking the threat seriously, while evidently trying to temper the news by saying such threats are commonplace during key events.

This serves only serves to keep "the war on terrorism" alive. Yeah, bad things happen from time to time but that doesn't mean it's necessarily a war. When did the real war on terrorism actually start, the Oklahoma City Bombing, Black Hawk Down, when the Branch Davidian's compound was surrounded? Those in charge want you to think it was started when the evil little brown man in the turban and his crazy overseas religion ticked us off. This is so we are glued to the TV on the 11th watching all the politicians with a little yellow ribbon get a photo op at Ground Zero when the first responders are the one's who should be there. It's to make us think the real war is here in the US affecting only American citizens instead of the actual third world countries and the people it's really affecting.

This looks like divergence tactics. Most likely, if they are going to strike, will be away from NY or DC. Some other soft target city, where local security is less vigil.

Something stinks about this....Why would an official report a credible threat? They would be working behind the scenes to figure out whats going on...not reporting (or Not reporting) on threats. I call foul. Don't drink the KOOl-aid and be a sheeple

I was thinking almost the opposite: if it's a credible threat (even unconfirmed) why not disclose the details so that everyone can be on the lookout? Maybe they have something specific they can do something behind the scenes first, or maybe the details might lead to panic. From what I've heard, they're talking about a vehicle-borne bomb somewhere in NYC and/or DC. If that's all they have, I'd think having everyone keeping their eyes open would be a good idea.

It's actually a pretty common approach. You get a threat and maybe you aren't sure of specific details that you need, so you make it sound like you know all about it. We did it all the time in Iraq...and it seemed to work, but it's one of those things you never know if it was a success or just somebody overreacting in the first place.

Concur about not being a Sheeple. "Officials" need to start providing specific information and not just try to solve the problem from behind the scenes.

I doubt any terrorist are planning anything considering we attacked ourselves on 9/11. Nice try US, but we all know who is guilty here, and it's not the so called "terrorist"

    Plenty of viable targets.

    1. The ceremony itself. The ultimate target for anyone looking to make a statement.

    2. The White House and/or Capitol Building. These were the suspected targets of Flight 93 during the attacks. A chance to finish what was started.

    3. Giants/Redskins game. NY vs DC in America's favorite game? Perfect way to bring down the "American Spirit".

    4. Numerous targets in the midwest or west coast. They were relatively ignored during the initial attacks, and probably have less security than the east coast will.

    5. Any and all American military stations at home and abroad. In fact, be surprised if there isn't an attack on US forces.

Smoke and mirrors, empty threats, extremists wanting everyone to pay attention to them. It's very much like raising a toddler who wants to be the center of attention and they will do or say whatever they think will gain them the spotlight. After shaking the saber for so long, you'd think that these morons would realize that their day is past. Poof, nothing but warm air and no substance, only their miserable little "cause" and nobody but them to care about it!

And if they blow up a vehicle loaded with explosives, killing thousands or even hundreds, it's still smoke and mirrors and empty threats?
If you receive a warning, you act on that warning and investigate. And you try to warn the public, without causing a panic or tipping off those potential attackers in full.
