Officials confirm 'credible but unconfirmed' 9/11 threat

[Updated at 10:05 p.m. ET] New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters Thursday night that authorities are "taking additional precautions" given "new threat information" tied to the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

These measures include "vehicle checkpoints around the city," more bomb-sniffing dogs around the city, increased towing of illegally parked cars and greater police staffing, according to Kelly.

[Updated at 9:56 p.m. ET] New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters Thursday night that while additional police will be deployed around the city amid reports of an "unconfirmed" terror threat to the city on September 11, "there's no reason for any of the rest of us to change ... our daily routines."

In an earlier statement, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged residents to be "cautious and aware" while adding, "There is no reason to panic." And D.C. Metro Police Chief Cathy Lanier said that authorities in the nation's capital are preparing for 9/11 anniversary events and noted "maintaining a certain sense of unpredictability is essential to the success of any security plan."

[Updated at 9:53 p.m. ET] U.S. officials said Thursday evening they have "specific, credible but unconfirmed" information about a potential threat against the United States coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

"We have received credible information very recently about a possible plot directed at the homeland that seems to be focused on New York and Washington, D.C.," a senior administration official told CNN Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr.

The official said the plot was believed to involve three individuals, including a U.S. citizen. U.S. officials believed the threat was a vehicle laden with explosives, but "the intelligence picture is not completely formed," the official said. "Not enough is known about the potential operatives and their plotting."

Another source gave CNN conflicting information about possible details of the threat.

A senior law enforcement official involved in briefings about the matter told CNN Justice Department Producer Terry Frieden that his best information is that the three individuals had not yet entered the United States.

The information came in around noon Wednesday, one official said.

A senior federal law enforcement official intimately involved in counterterrorism efforts told CNN Chief National Correspondent John King authorities "aren't sure if this is or real or just chatter." The official confirmed the threat was vehicle-related.

Officials said they were taking the threat seriously, while evidently trying to temper the news by saying such threats are commonplace during key events.

THE russians are coming! The Russians are coming! Better build a billion dollars worth of bomb shelters and hide. (imagine if we had invested all the money we spent on civil defense programs and fallout shelters in IBM, McDonalds, and CAT. we'd all be filthy rich. Do the math.

Likewise, think of all the money you would save if you never bought insurance for your house, your car, etc. Just hope like heck that nothing bad happens and you would actually need the insurance.

THE terrorists are coming! The Terrorists are coming! (fortunatly we can afford duct-tape to this very day ! After 9/11, hardware stores nationwide were sold-out of duct-tape and plastic sheating for "seaking up" their homes as Uncle Sam was warning of "dirty bimbs" going off everywhere. Duct-tape is cheaper than bomb shelters, but still would have made a lot of cash if invested in gold rather than tape.

J.F.K famously said "fear nothing but fear it self". Hence, implementing fear in people's minde is in it self an act of terrorisim, and fear is all what the citizens get from the very same authority that supposedly fights terrorisim. Why must we know about potential threats? why can't they conduct their investigiations without maaking a public statment about potential yet unfounded credible threats ? The DHS lady answered this question; "we want citizens to be visulant of suspecious activites" well, I had my observations, and I attempted notifying the authoreties; the response was unless you see a crime hapening you don't need to be concerned. So...the informing citizen about potential threats serves no purpose other than keeping us in fear and that my fellow readers is a tourturious, terrorising and emberassing act. May God bless America, and nowhere else.

It's quite laughable how a lot of people are scared over another 9/11 terrorist attack. It's like Chicken Little who kept yelling " the sky is falling, the sky is falling" but most people buy into it, unfortunately. But on the other hand, the C.I.A. may try to bring about a phoney attack in order to restore credibility the government.

The threat is from the GOP. They'll destroy the nation if that's what it takes to destroy this President.

Expect to hear about more and more threats the closer it gets.I don't think anything is going to happen personaly but if it was to happen it will no doubt be by using the so called 'lone wolf"theory. They can inflict greater damge and hurt us more by going this route than any other way

Exactly. They scared US into the Partriot Act...and now they are trying to scare us even more into the already written, just waiting on a pretext to ratify "Victory Act" that strips uS of our dignity. A scared man running away from little of nothings has no dignity anyway, so he won't miss it when it's gone. gn

Virtually everyone who has ever purchased insurance on thei car, boat, house, health, etc., has in fact called upon that insurance for protection. The same cannot be said of the billions spent defending against an 'credible but not for sure' threat. Besides, Lloyda of London, a foreign insurance corp. paid for virtually all of the 9/11 damage claims paid so far, even though Bush officially called 9/11 an act of war. Insurance does not cover war. The other claims nade ny 9/11 victims families vs. American Airlines, Bush's Securacom corp., The House of Saud, G-dub himself, etc., are still tied-up in uS courts, believe it or not, and after 10 years. So comparing personal insurance that we use with "national insurance" that we've never used is stupid...or at least ignorant of the facts 9/11.
