Lt. governor: Texas needs disaster declaration from Obama

Texas needs an immediate disaster declaration from President Barack Obama allowing access to heavy equipment and other assistance to help battle wildfires burning across the state, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said.

The White House has not responded to the state's previous request, Dewhurst contends, and "we need help yesterday."

There was no immediate response from the White House.

A disaster declaration would give the state access to heavy equipment, personnel, supplies and other support that would help it respond after nearly 300 consecutive days of wildfires, Dewhurst said.

Obama has approved a limited disaster declaration for fires in April and May.

"But this problem has been ongoing since January," Dewhurst said. "And if anything it's gotten worse."

@Yeddo. Perry isn't the one who declares it a disaster duh, all he can do is ask for Federal assistance it's then up to the President to declare it a disaster area.

Interesting, Perry rants and raves about federal involvement in a states internal affairs. Both Rand and Perry said "Personal Responsibility" now with this horrific fire situation. Perry cries out to the very federal government he deplore. Hypocrisy in action!

Perhaps Perry and Dewhurst should tap the state's $9 billion Rainy Day Fund. You know, the fund that they refused to use to fully fund public education in Texas over the next two years. Or do they just intend to hold onto this taxpayer money indefinitely when the state needs the funding put to good use? When one continually thumbs his nose at the federal government the way Rick Perry does, then you get what you get when you come crying for help: you're SOL, as they say.

@Dave have another look, he's waiting for Eric Cantor and congress to decide what to cut to send the money, I guess there is no limit to the make Obama look bad. Go google it. How long will it take, as long as the republicans have the purse strings.

They pulled out when the Hurricane hit. They are still working in Joplin. But FEMA was cut by Congress as other "needless organizations " by republicans. The clean air, water and land government is also on the blocks. Wheeeeeeeee let's cut our government. Watch it isn't government, it's programs for us Dave.

Perhaps if Mr. Perry had not cut volunteer fire department funding by 75% this year (yes, you read that righ), we might have the funds to fight our own damn fires. Shame on him for taking credit for cutting the budget on one hand and begging for federal money with the other hand.

@Alan Kachin; and I suppose you'd let the Federal Government come right on in to your State and allow them to do whatever they want as long as you could still live off the government dole. Ha, right. I bet you're one of those that complained about the Feds wire tapping possible terrorists. You probably also complain about the security screenings at airports and the Feds watching internet activity among other things. Must be nice being such a hypocrite.

Jim, your comment doesn't qualify a response. I just believe " Say what you mean and mean what you say" Perhaps if you stepped back from your political tribal mentality and believe in the inclusive country so many fought and died for. I'm 70 I've heard the same Republican Mantra from every Republican politician since I first voted 49 years ago. Here is the "BIG SECRET" I'll let it out of the hat. PRIVATIZE EVERYTHING, Deregulate Everything, and perhaps a Few Crumbs will fall to the masses. remember as you wrote "Dole" The Republican concept is The poor, sick, elderly, unemployed are all Lazy on drugs and Democrats.
