Quakes hit off Cuba, Japan and New Zealand

[Updated at 10:39 a.m. ET] The U.S. Geological Survey has revised downward the magnitude of Thursday morning's earthquake off Cuba to magnitude 5.1 from magnitude 6.0.

[Updated at 5:20 a.m. ET] A magnitude 6.0 earthquake hit off the southeastern coast of Cuba early Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake was centered 77 miles north of Montego Bay, Jamaica, and 370 miles southeast of Havana, Cuba. It hit at 4:43 a.m.

Forty-three minutes earlier, a magnitude 6.2 earthquake rumbled off the east coast of Japan, the USGS reported.  No tsunami warning was issued.

Both quakes were shallow, striking at a depth of six miles.

And seven minutes before the Japan quake, a magnitude 6.0 quake was recorded off the coast of New Zealand, according to the USGS.

like i said if civilization goes 80% of you will go with it. somebody said well us doctors and scientists will be among the ones to bring it back. how? all you know is modern medicine and most of you professionals wouldnt last without cops protecting you. if you disagree then go and hang with the gang bangers and biker clubs and see how well you make friends. i guess some will be made usefull but it wont be you calling the shots. nothing is probably gonna happen but this is a fun blog to read all the mumbo jumbo.

Yes we have so much technology, kill off too many and it will collapse, do you know how to startup or run a power plant, drive a train, turn oil into gas, diesel, can you fix a cell phone tower, or internet server, or your local electricity grid, water supply system, run a hospital, setup up a government, bring in supplies? Most of us could figure out some things if their were manuals left behind, but the system, the world we know now would be gone probably forever.

@ Chis, I hope you are right, but I know the time can not be much longer. And don't worry, you are not setting any time, it is that you and others like you can see the signs of the times. And I think the signs were more for the unbeliever than the believer so they will be without excuse. You know, like the parent who warns the child [the unbeliever] that if he does something wrong there will be consequenses to pay.

Why would CNN headline that the quake hit off Cuba (over 200 miles away) when it actually hit off Jamaica (70 miles away) ? No wonder there are all these strange people theorizing about what GOD is doing. They don't don't even know what SHE was doing on 9/11. Instead of "blessing" us (America), SHE was probably busy elsewhere in the "universe." And to think all these religious speculators are going to vote in the US presidential election next year. Ummm, flip a coin Sarah wins, no matter what happens.

Ha! I posted the same thing on here earlier about the proximity of the quake to Jamaica vs Cuba earlier. Made no sense to me, unless Jamaica paid CNN not to use their name in the headline so as to not scare tourists away. Very possible, I suppose. I thought CNN was fairly objective, but maybe not!!!

As a Christian, please accept my apology for some of those posting here who use this term so loosely. Most of us with a sound Orthodox Christian worldview don't take the time to post on such ridiculous threads, but please know that those who do are a small minority among Christians. Please read the Bible to learn about the person of Jesus, not what someone else says about Him.

Thank you Karen for your apology, not that you have any connection to the bizarre posts by others, but this is probably the only post here written in the spirit a Christian.

Hey Oh No!, if Job did not say flat, maybe that is made up, and what about Isaiah 40: 22? And as for Psalms 104: 5, that scripture goes hand in hand with scriptures like Ec 1:4 "the earth is standing to time indefinite" these are references, or promises that the earth was created to last forever. Another example, at Genesis 11: 1 how the whole earth was one language, obviously the earth cannot talk, but we can discern that it means all the language spoken was of the same dialect. The Bible has been proven more times true and accurate, then false, only the matters of faith is it ever challenged, and maybe that is because man refuses to believe in what he cannot see.

    • Oh no!

It has been challenged on content and proven incorrect numerous times. For reference, please take a theology class at your local (not Christian-based) college or university. There are far too many examples to cite here. It's also pretty amazing that 2000 years ago, pretty much everything that came from the sky or the land was an act of God. As science improved, less and less needs to be explained that way. As technology improves, the societial basis or need for a religion declines. The only reason religion continues in our society to this day is indoctrination and social conditioning. I have some very intelligent friends that are believers. We talk science, politics... we know better than to discuss religion.
