Police: Soldier escaped military custody, vanished after chase

State police in central New York are looking for a U.S. soldier who they say escaped military custody at Fort Drum, stole his parents' car and led police on a four-county chase.

Pfc. Russell Marcum, 20, of Morgantown, West Virginia, is considered armed and dangerous, state police said.

Marcum, who was in "unit custody" on the base after being arrested earlier in the week on suspicion of burglary, eluded officials on base Thursday night, got into an altercation with a fellow soldier and stole his parents’ 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche, state Trooper Jack Keller said.

He drove away from the area and led police on a chase, Keller said. The car eventually went over stop sticks that police had deployed in rural Otsego County, and Marcum lost control of the vehicle, according to Keller.

Marcum left the car and fled into a wooded area, and he hasn’t been seen since, Keller said.

Just hours before he left Fort Drum, Marcum’s parents bailed him out of the Jefferson County (New York) Jail, where he’d been held since Monday on burglary charges, Fort Drum spokeswoman Julie Cupernall said. He was placed into unit custody at Fort Drum after his parents posted bail, Cupernall said.

Marcum joined the Army in August 2010 and was deployed to Afghanistan from January to March, Cupernall said.

This poor young man. I guess once you're out of the military you are on your own. I hope this young man finds the right path. At only 20 years old Russell can go to dental school and be a dental assistant. I know that working in people's mouth is not pleasant but it is a job of honor and pays well. He can also be off on weekends and enjoy his time off. I respect dentists and their assistants. They all work very hard. I'm sure Russell will do well whatever he chooses.

Apparently, he chose burglary. And he isn't out of the military. If he joined in 2010, he still has a ways to go. With room and board covered, he didn't need to steal.

He's a loser. Did you even read the article?

Look at that outstanding physical training at work. 20 year old in his prime isn't going to be caught on foot by a gaggle of obese cops.

Poor Russ should have just taken his licks for the burglary charge. Now he's just made a mountain out of a mole hill. Not only will local authorities be out to get him, but the US military is going to want to have their way with him also. I do not envy him at all.

The military sends him to a country on the other side of the earth and teaches him that murder for fun and profit is ok and then ship him home and can't understand why he doesn't know right from wrong anymore...Hmmmm...

Actually, he MADE that choice to join the Army. 2nd of all the military DOES NOT TEACH that it is perfectly okay to murder people like you just said.

I live in the area where he escaped from the vehicle. He has stated that he will not be taken alive by the State Police. Hopefully, he does not kill anyone else in an attempt for that to happen. He is in a rural part of NYS, pretty much farmland.

I live in the town of West Winfield, and the police supposedly "trapped" him in a swamp earlier, but now they're scanning everywhere with a infrared camera, nowhere near where he was "trapped".
they have no idea where this guy is and they also lied to us about him definitely having a 9mm pistol; now they say he probably isn't armed. make up your damned minds.
also if hes just going to jail for robbery, then why were there so many soldiers with machine guns? the entire town is crawling with officers and troops.... scary stuff eh?

  12. Assassinate suspects

This man is now a well-known suspect. President Obama will no-doubt be ordering a team of paid assassins to track this man down and kill him before he can reach the nearest courtroom and do some real damage.

This young man doesn't deserve what everyone is saying about him if you don't know you shouldn't put your two cents in. He knows he in trouble but what concern is it to youns. It should be with him and his parents and family. And what ever the court do the whole family will stand with him. So just please leave him be.. and don't be NASTY!!!!!

Srsly... did you really just type "youns?" Does that mean "you," or "yours?" Or did you really mean to type "youns?"

*shakes head* Evidently, he joined the army to complete his education but didn't get far enough to learn that theft was a crime. I will hope that this situation is resolved soon and without bloodshed. 🙁

After only 3 months overseas? There's no such thing as a 3 month deployment...more than likely he's an idiot and got himself sent home for being a problem child. No sympathy from me over this kid...he decides to commit burglary and then to top it off, he steals a car and flees from the authorities. Some of these posts must be from people who know him personally...and it's obvious you're all as mildly retarded as ol' Russell here!
