Police: Soldier escaped military custody, vanished after chase

State police in central New York are looking for a U.S. soldier who they say escaped military custody at Fort Drum, stole his parents' car and led police on a four-county chase.

Pfc. Russell Marcum, 20, of Morgantown, West Virginia, is considered armed and dangerous, state police said.

Marcum, who was in "unit custody" on the base after being arrested earlier in the week on suspicion of burglary, eluded officials on base Thursday night, got into an altercation with a fellow soldier and stole his parents’ 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche, state Trooper Jack Keller said.

He drove away from the area and led police on a chase, Keller said. The car eventually went over stop sticks that police had deployed in rural Otsego County, and Marcum lost control of the vehicle, according to Keller.

Marcum left the car and fled into a wooded area, and he hasn’t been seen since, Keller said.

Just hours before he left Fort Drum, Marcum’s parents bailed him out of the Jefferson County (New York) Jail, where he’d been held since Monday on burglary charges, Fort Drum spokeswoman Julie Cupernall said. He was placed into unit custody at Fort Drum after his parents posted bail, Cupernall said.

Marcum joined the Army in August 2010 and was deployed to Afghanistan from January to March, Cupernall said.

Recently i had seen a commericial stating that soilders above all pray for peace. that is the opposite of what i experienced in the military. just about every permanent party soilder had a coffee cup sporting the words /pray for war/ i was tuaght in the military that american soilders are the most intelligent criminals in the world. blood makes the grass grow & guts makes the grass grow green/ is just one chant used to pump up trainees.
the police liying about this soilder being armed & dangerous only shows some of the length the local authorities go. yes, the military does teach soilders that murder is ok as long as there on the winning team & every soilder in a high risk area comes back with ptsd especially soilders that are under 21 because they don't have a release like older soilders do such as alcohol. realistically if you can die for the fake freedoms of people you don't know & don't always agree with, why can't they have a release or a real relaxing down time like all the older soilders?

Because if the only way u can relax is alcohol, that's sad...I don't want the person next to me drunk & firing a weapon or driving a vehicle...get a clue

Mark, your comment is all I need to read and my blood is boiling... You claim to be serving our country and yet you then insult a the ancestry of many of our citizens. That's shameful behavior for someone representing our country. Do you feel the same way about the "Latinos" that are in the armed services?

everybody has there right to opinion. Its america. I would hope the we dont teach that in the military."Its kill or be kill on the lines.". Not murder is fun.Everybody is scared. Ptsd might be to blame cause there is no exact way to tell and how they will react to civilian life some act out differently. His case sounds fishy to me but it could be that its not for him.(political war) we dont fight for the reasons they tell us. He knows why we are fighting and he doesnt want to give his life for it. And yes he is a weapon. Once a man kills he is never the same. Killing is not wrong in his eyes now only the reason. Hes young. right and wrong are still in his head. He doesnt want to go back. And he did what he had to do to get out. In my eyes military and civilian life has become two different realities. Each have there own problems right now that need to be accessed and fix. Everything is primitive for being " the superior beings on this planet" war/hate/money. It shouldnt be this way if we were what we sayweare

He was there 3 months. I don't know what his MOS was or why he was sent home. I'm reasonably sure that it had to do with being found unfit for duty, unless of course he was injured. Not everyone in Afghanistan or Iraq goes outside the wire. And certainly not everyone comes home to burgle. PTSD isn't really known for normal criminal activities. I've been to both Iraq (2x) and Afghanistan (1) and do have PTSD. Finding an excuse for him lessens the actions of the men and women who serve so proudly and leads one to think that military service creates criminals. Sometimes a criminal gets into the military, which seems the most likely situation.

If the crime was off post, it's the police. He was remanded to military but would face trial and then probably a courts marshall by the military, then dishonorable discharge.
