Nevada air show death toll rises to 10

The death toll from a crash at an air race at Reno, Nevada, has risen to 10, one of the hospitals treating patients from Friday's accident said Monday.

Close to 70 people were injured in the incident, which occurred Friday.

National Transportation Safety Board member Mark Rosekind said investigators are looking at whether the plane's apparently damaged elevator trim tab - whose breaking apart was captured in a photograph - played a role in the nosedive crash. Authorities do not know why the aircraft went down.

A full investigation could take six to nine months, Rosekind said.

Investigators will be poring over a trove of spectators' videos and photos, he said.

"It seems there were a tremendous number of cameras and video that was captured," he said. "On the one hand, it's an excellent source of information, but on the other hand, there's not a lot of other specific components from the wreckage that at this point we can identify."

At the time of the crash, three NTSB investigators happened to be at the air show - a common practice - and one of them has been appointed investigator in charge, Rosekind said.

The board will look at safety oversight and the placement of the grandstands for the air race, Rosekind said.

People arent meant to fly. As a mormon I know and respect this fact. We are not birds or fish.

too nice..you are not a mormon, Latter Day Saints do not have any issues with flying and fly all of the time. John Huntsman senior and Junior have a fleet of airplanes. The LDS prophets fly all of the time.

      """People arent meant to fly."""

We're not birds or fish? So we're not meant to travel by boat, either? Maybe we're also not meant to travel faster than we can run? What exactly is your point?

People aren't meant to live past 30 years, either. But we do, and it's because of science.

First off the LDS faith as a whole is a farce. Joseph Smith...your prophet who found gold tablets from god....happened to stumble on them from a buddy of his in the shipping business who excavated the Mayan ruins in Tulum Mexico..where there just happens to be missing gold tablets with symbols that matched a lot of the "eye witness accounts" of Smith's followers...oh yea he was married to like 8 girls...10 women who had husbands..do some research.....also he never revealed the tablets without the guise and showmanship of an illusionist...thus creating an entire religion of his hallucinations

The fight plan was not above the crowd. The crowd is placed 1/4 mile off the track. This plane did some very unexpected manuver and with the pilot passed out, as I believe after watching the vids and seeing the pics, there was no way for him to correct the path of the plane. I know some people say he pulled up to avoid the crowd but after seeing it, it was just the way the plane was going anyways.

And he will be missed and accidents do happen. His wings were his life and he's given it all to sore hi in the sky forever at his side. Amen

I would agree that he would not want to take anyone with him, but if you look at the photos you would see he was not in control of the plane at all.

This was a a sad event for all involved, but all life comes with risk. If you live your live scared of everything, what fun would that be? I have been at Reno for the unlimited air races, and it is exhilarating to watch. I didn't have to attend, but I accepted the risk for the enjoyment. For those who claim it is too dangerous and scoff at those who attend, I have but one thing to say:

If you can't soar with the eagles, I guess you'll have to peck $h!t with the chickens!

    a. Aircraft do not overfly spectators at the Reno Air Races. b. First injuries or fatalities at this event in over 40 years. c. Unless the pilot was unconscious, he did try to miss the crowd. The fact that his aircraft was probably uncontrollable due to in-flight damage to one of the control surfaces makes his efforts even more heroic. Don't be so quick to criticize things you know nothing about.

Considering tens of thousands of commercial jets fly overhead in place like Seattle, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Atlanta and very few deaths are ever recorded at all, your point of 'flying over the crowd" is moot. Also, you realize planes travel at over two hundred miles an hour. Most need a hundred fifty at the bare minimum to even get any lift., let alone take off. A plane from the WWII era could break and veer completely off course and slam into a crowd in SPLIT SECONDS. One does not need to fly directly over a crowd, to suddenly have their plane careening towards them.

I think it's about time to put all air shows to rest. We need to start rethinking what we need as entertainment and what has the potential for needless accidents. Is this or any air show worth the risk?

    • Uh, yeah...

I agree!! We should start to rethink all entertainment – people falling trying to catch a foul ball, car crashes, broken limbs and torn achilles during football games, blisters from throwing darts, etc. Sit at home people...play checkers, but play safely. We should go back to the old days when entertainment was safe and fun...like in the days of gladiators...

More than half? If you want origin stories, most British, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Polish people came from the viking regions due to the Visigoth and Ostrogoth migrations. So not even a German is "originated from Germany." However, we are all Americans. And we speak Merriam-Webster English. It's good that you have learned it, but you need to elarn geographical, geopolitical, and historical population migrations before you spout some BS about "more than half of Americans originate elsewhere." My blood traces to the English and Germans since the 1750s. My "country of Origin" is a country my family helped make. As are many Americans who are here. if you consider yourself American? You originate from America. Otherwise, you're German, Chinese, Mongolian, Turkmenistani, Bangledeshi, Sikh, or where ever else you're from. And if you don't consider yourself America, why the bloody hell come here? Go back whence you came if you don't like us.

Risentroll, Keep your stories to yourself. What does it have to do with language, grammar and spelling? There are people in this country who don't even speak english, native americans who live here longer than you and not know grammar or how to wright properly. What is your point? Perhaps that you should go back to your racist moronic cave. You not part of us, you belong elsewhere.
