Nevada air show death toll rises to 10

The death toll from a crash at an air race at Reno, Nevada, has risen to 10, one of the hospitals treating patients from Friday's accident said Monday.

Close to 70 people were injured in the incident, which occurred Friday.

National Transportation Safety Board member Mark Rosekind said investigators are looking at whether the plane's apparently damaged elevator trim tab - whose breaking apart was captured in a photograph - played a role in the nosedive crash. Authorities do not know why the aircraft went down.

A full investigation could take six to nine months, Rosekind said.

Investigators will be poring over a trove of spectators' videos and photos, he said.

"It seems there were a tremendous number of cameras and video that was captured," he said. "On the one hand, it's an excellent source of information, but on the other hand, there's not a lot of other specific components from the wreckage that at this point we can identify."

At the time of the crash, three NTSB investigators happened to be at the air show - a common practice - and one of them has been appointed investigator in charge, Rosekind said.

The board will look at safety oversight and the placement of the grandstands for the air race, Rosekind said.

Look son, the burden of proof is on you for supporting a broad generalizations like that. Recess is now over.

Naaaaah. If this guy survived he should have been put on trail for murder. He could have lived out his last few weeks thinking of the innocents he brutally murdered while tring to pretend he is a 20 year old. That old guy was one creepy looser.

Maintaining choice to continue to fly in or witness air shows means population reduction certainty which is always good. I have never been to one of these shows and I guarantee I will go toes up without ever getting anywhere near one of these death traps. I have personally known two men who flew in and died at airshows which is two more than death by lightening.

This was a tragic accident at the reno air races and that's all. Racing in many events is dangerous to both the participants and the audience. I have been to more than 12 reno air races and have seen a few bad accidents and fatalities. When you go to these races you instinctively know they're dangerous. if you are alert and can read there are signs posted making you aware of this. As a lover of flying and racing I was fortunate to become friends with some of a pilot's and crew over the years which gave me the opportunity to sit in those very boxes. To be that close to the sound of the roaring engines and planes whizzing by is throwing an exciting

Nothing like a tragedy to bring out the sick minds and comments. Nothing can match the sound and thrill of a Rolls-Merlin going past at full boost (plus). It shakes the sky, earth and the spectators to the core. Words cannot describe the experience and total rush !!

Oh crap, I hate smartphone touch screens. Thrilling and exciting and I would sit in those boxes again. I believe the chances of being killed or hurt at an airshow is probably less likely than being struck by lightning.

All it take on a WWII fighter is for some cables to snap and control is lost.

All it takes for a modern fly-by-wire aircraft is an electronic module or servo to fail. Heck, even modern small aircraft use cables and are extrememly safe. Rather rare for a control cable failure.

There are millions of starving people and this guy is allowed to have a private plane. I think all private plane ownership should be banned. No one person should be allowed to have that much money.

No one should be allowed that much money? So you work in an auto body shop fixing cars. We take away the owner's money and then what does he pay you with? Poor people don't open auto body shops. Also, that plane owner is supporting many people. He needs a part made so he pays a local shop to make it. He pays rent to house the plane and taxes on it. People who own planes SPEND lots of money

Obviously your an idiot who has nothing to show for your own hard work, or do you. If so, you've spent your money as you've seen fit, kinda like, rewarding yourself. And, I;m sure you have your own form of entertainment. Just because your not smart enough to find a way to wealth don't begrude others.

Unplug yours and give it away. My suggestion to you is to move to say...Cuba, North Korea....get the point?

There is already evidence that the plane was significantly modified and not thoroughly tested before the Air Show.
The finger of blame will eventually rest on the pilot, however he died also. If you are stupid enough to attend these shows,
and there are accidents EVERY year in America at them, then you take the risk. If you go to these shows for "excitement"
    you were not disappointed.

Sometimes planes (or cars) crash into homes and kill those who didn't take any 'stupid' chances and stayed safely at home on the couch.

Before all of you uninformed post negative comments about banning air racing,,,stop to consider how many drivers and spectators have died or been injured at car races. Yep, well into the hundreds,, so where is the cry to ban auto races?? Just about any one can learn to drive, it takes skill, brains, training and money to get your pilot's license and you have to be certified physically and mentally fit. The Reno air races are totally awsome, I even met Pappy Boyington there back in the 1970's. Ban the trolls, keep the races.
