Bottle of whisky sells for $200,000

It may be the most expensive drink ever.

A Chinese businessman has put down a deposit of $79,400 ($100,000 Singapore) on a bottle of Scotch whisky that goes for $200,000 ($250,000 Singapore). The 62-year-old bottle of Dalmore single malt is one of only 12 produced, according to a report on ChannelNewsAsia.com.

The $200,000 bottle price amounts to about $12,000 per serving, the report said.

The bottle of whisky is still on display at a duty-free shop in Singapore's Changi Airport. The businessman put down the deposit with a bank transfer, an airport spokesman told ChannelNewsAsia.

The price breaks the retail record set by another bottle of the same brand three months ago, according to the Moodie Report. That bottle of Dalmore 64 sold in London for $188,000.

Vijay Mallya , chairman of Whyte & Mackay and United Spirits, which owns the Dalmore brand, told the Moodie Report that whisky is a good investment.

“The record breaking Dalmore 62 is an absolute bargain in my mind. The owner of this fabulous bottle now owns one of the rarest and most exclusive whiskies in the world. It’s a fantastic investment, rising in value by £100,000 ($157,000)  in 10 years. How much will it be worth in another 10 years?" Mallya is quoted as saying.

The Dalmore 62 was first offered for sale in 2002 at $39,000, according to the Moodie report.

Must be the only whiskey in the world that helps you keep the yang up. I used to drink it before I snuck into Banasy's bedroom at nite.

This is one of those cases where fools and their money come into play. I wonder if the taste/experience difference is worth the $199980 he's paying extra over a bottle JD Black label??!!!

I'm not really whiskey drinker, so I can't tell a difference between a taste of a $200,000 whisky from a $4.00 whisky bottle. Anyways, not until I get the bill.

Depends on the size of the bottle. I've got a $4 bottle of whiskey in my liquor cabinet. Of course, it is a 1.75 oz bottle.

But the rich can't pay their fair share in taxes, or they will be destroyed along with our jobs. What malarky.

First, goofball , the "rich" guy in question here is Chinese. He pays ZERO US taxes. And the reason he has this much money to spend on whiskey is because of all of the Americans who don't think twice about buying Chinese products.

Second, he just helped keep the company Whyte and Mackay in business and helped to preserve the jobs of their employees. Unfortunately for us in the US, it is a Scottish company, but good for them! Rich people buying luxury items keep many people around the globe in jobs.

Good thing it's from the duty-free shop or else it would have been expensive.

A few other people said this aswell, the rich cant pay their share in taxes but can squander money on this, i hope this man knows that he will go to hell for his spending......he could have saved starving children with his money or helped someone in need. Buy a house for peats sake.......buying a bottle of whisky for that price is just asking for damnation from god on your idol posessions

I agree with the taxes, but i think he should spend the rest of his bank account on whatever he wants. as long as it is legal.

He's CHINESE. He doesn't pay US taxes. Besides, he just helped preserve the jobs of all of the employees of Whyte and Mackay, the distiller who made the whisky. Would you prefer that they go out of business, and end up among the starving, so he can give them handouts instead of rewarding them for producing an exquisite whisky? Rich people make wonderful customers. They buy things with big profit margins that help keep companies in business. This is a good thing.

BTW, since he's Chinese, there is a pretty decent chance he doesn't believe in hell.

Seems the author had too much "whiskey" before writing the article... When you can't spell 'whiskey' properly and your math is showing a savings of $1500 for the luck buyer... it is time to stay home!

      Scotch Whisky... correct spelling

Actually its Scotch whisky, a whisky made in Scotland, which outside Scotland is commonly abbreviated as "Scotch". So "whisky" is correct...

Scotland and Canada both spell it "Whisky"
The US and Ireland both spell it "Whiskey"
The most appropriate spelling is to consider the country of origin of the drink in question and use their spelling in that context. So "Scotch Whisky", "Canadian Whisky", "Bourbon Whiskey", and "Irish Whiskey", are the most correct spelling.

Since this is an article about a bottle of Scotch Whisky (which, IMO, is the only REAL kind heh) I applaud the author for the correct nuanced approach, and I somewhat deride you for not already knowing all this, despite your claim to be a "Whiskey Lover"... my guess would be you're talking primarily about Jack Daniels 🙂
