Gotta Watch: Flash mobs

They are a spectacle of choreographed, spontaneous dancing involving masses of people. Flash mobs take precision and planning to pull off, but when successful, they are a sight to be seen. Inspired by a recent flash mob wedding proposal that puts lots of other proposals to shame, we decided to take a look back at some of our favorite flash mob dance routines.

Flash mob proposal – Nam Tran pulled out all the stops when he proposed to his girlfriend, Trang Vu. Tran organized a flash mob of students and family members to bust a  move to Frankie Valli's "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You." The whole mob got down on one knee as he proposed on the campus of UCLA, where the couple first met.

Inmates dance for Jackson – Hardened criminals are probably the least likely group one would imagine bursting into choreographed dance. But inmates at one prison in the Philippines dedicated countless hours learning Michael Jackson's dance moves and even paid tribute to the performer shortly after his death.

Mall flash mob matrimony – Shoppers at a Massachusetts mall suddenly found themselves in the middle of a flash mob wedding. Family, friends and shoppers all gathered for the public wedding that was kicked off by a flash mob dance routine. The bride and groom even sent out instructions for the dance moves along with the wedding invitations.

Last, but not least, we thought we should include one more of our favorite flash mob scenes  from the ABC's "Modern Family."

I was involved in a flash mob two weeks ago in Los Angeles, for Courage Campaign California and it was, without a doubt, the COOLEST THING I've ever been involved with. It was fun and also for a good cause. I urge everyone, if given a chance, to do one of these!!!

Here's the link to the official video

There is no way in Hell that I gotta watch flash mobs. If I see one start, I'm going to do everything I can to screw it up.

I am right there with you Bimbo: I am sure nothing would ruin a Flash Mob performance quite like pulling the fire alarm within a few seconds of one starting. These things are so lame. 🙂

That would be selfish. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean you have to try and make everyone else not enjoy it. Just walk away. Flash mobs are about positive energy and unity.. so I'm sure no one will mind when you take your negative energy elsewhere.

Such hatred in response to one sarcastic comment. I thought you people were supposed to be all bubbly and cute. Such hatred.

They are all dancing for Ron Paul. They are so excited by his message that they can't help tapping their feet.

I didn't realize that the performances of the Philippines prisoners, which are publicly advertised weeks ahead of time, qualified as a flash mob. Do Broadway performances and music concerts count?

The inmate video was added over 4 years ago, Plus its not a flash mob, the prison does this as an activity to keep them occupied and keep moral up.

I read an article about this Thriller dance and many others performed by these inmates. From what I read, the warden makes these inmates do these dances and charges admissionn to outsiders to come watch them. If the inmates dont participate or screw up, they are put in confinement or beaten.

Blacks in Philthadelphia have turned the term into something completely different. You don't want to be anywhere near them when they break into THEIR little routine.
