Shark severely injures man near Cape Town

A British man was severely injured in an attack by a great white shark while swimming this week near Cape Town, South Africa.

Michael Cohen, 43, lost his right leg and suffered injuries to his left foot in Wednesday's incident near Fish Hoek Beach. He was in critical condition and under heavy sedation in an intensive care unit on Thursday.

According to city officials, the beach was closed when Cohen decided to go for a swim. Warning flags had been raised to alert beach goers that it was not safe to enter the water due to shark sightings.  Officials said it was not clear why Cohen ignored the warnings.

One eyewitness told city officials he watched the shark lunge toward Cohen and "shake him." He said the shark then let him go and swam away.

Two people told officials they rushed to the water to assist Cohen to shore.

Twelve shark attacks have been reported in Cape Town since 1998, according to city officials. In half of these cases, the city said, beach goers were warned that sharks had been spotted in the water.

Whaat?? How do you know he's white? How does this story warrant a race comment?

It's true. There's not a single Brit of any race other than Caucasian.

Not a case of a white man doing something stupid, a case of natural selection. The gene pool just got smarter.

More like a case of a (great) white shark who CAN do anything he wants.

Any race can do whatever they want...it's called "free will." If they are maimed, die or go to jail then so be it.

First, it doesn't say anything about race. He could be purple with green polkadots for all the article says.
Second, nature calls this Natural Selection.

Sounds like they need to make the warnings a little clearer. The "warnings" are just white flags on a pole. Unlikely an out-of-towner would have any idea what that means.

Minus the fact that there are signs that explain what the flags mean. And on the sign it states that if the white flag is up that means a shark has been sited, an alarm is sounding, and swimmers are urged to exit the water immediately.

Clearer?! A giant white flag with a picture of a shark on it with signs below the flag to further explain what that means. Yeah, very confusing. Plus he was a regular swimmer at the beach (which was CLOSED at the time), so I'm thinking he very well knew better. Ah, the invincibility complex...

Every time one of the million sharks in the ocean bites one of the billions of people in this world it becomes a news story. Why?
