Shark severely injures man near Cape Town

A British man was severely injured in an attack by a great white shark while swimming this week near Cape Town, South Africa.

Michael Cohen, 43, lost his right leg and suffered injuries to his left foot in Wednesday's incident near Fish Hoek Beach. He was in critical condition and under heavy sedation in an intensive care unit on Thursday.

According to city officials, the beach was closed when Cohen decided to go for a swim. Warning flags had been raised to alert beach goers that it was not safe to enter the water due to shark sightings.  Officials said it was not clear why Cohen ignored the warnings.

One eyewitness told city officials he watched the shark lunge toward Cohen and "shake him." He said the shark then let him go and swam away.

Two people told officials they rushed to the water to assist Cohen to shore.

Twelve shark attacks have been reported in Cape Town since 1998, according to city officials. In half of these cases, the city said, beach goers were warned that sharks had been spotted in the water.

Not really. What they don't mention in this article is that the flags are raised 50% of the time in cape town, and they're more of a liability waiver than a legitimate warning system.

A man lost his leg in a shark attack, weather he heeded the signs or not, should we just point at him and say "what an idiot" or be at least civilized and feel for the guy and his family, I think the later. Why has the world gotten so hateful and cynical. It's like the "Lord of the Flies" like screw that guy he just stupid, really people what if the guy was your Dad or your brother or your son. Without any feeling, remorse, or compassion the World is doomed to fail. Try being nice and compassionate, it's a much more worthy cause.

    • eda83 dad and/or brother would never go swimming in shark infested water, expecially if there were warning signs posted. Seriously, who does that? This guy deserved to be eaten and, furthermore, to be ridiculed for being stupid enough to put himself in a position where he might be eaten.

We trash him because now he's going to expect others to fix his problem. He will want free health care and rehab from this, free additions/alterations to his home, and will profit from selling a book that talks about his "courage through struggles". Meanwhile, people not STUPID enough to heed the warnings will go on as hard-working members of society required to work hard to have what they have. That's why

I'd like to say to all those offended people that if you were at a club talking to a cute little nurse, the way I was rubbin' up on that little nurse shark, and some guy jumped on top of you, you'd probably react in a hostile way. Besides, I was hungry.
