Apple on Tuesday unveiled the iPhone 4S, a faster version of its best-selling smartphone that includes a virtual "personal assistant" you can talk to. And, for the first time, the iPhone will be available on the Sprint wireless network, as well as AT&T and Verizon.
Like with many Apple-related stories, news of the release drew comments from Apple lovers and haters either singing the phone’s praises or pointing out what the phone lacks.
Mjj09 said, “You know, if they just put a Steve Jobs’ cutout holding an iPhone4S on stage... I bet Apple would sell 12 million phones tonight.”
Professorjaz said, “I am in. To all you nay-sayers, you don't have to buy one.”
Prle said, “What a joke. Well, at least I m not disappointed that just two weeks ago I bought the iPhone 4, but a friend of mine didn't want to buy; He was waiting for iPhone 5, oh well.”
madchadley responded, “At least he'll be able to buy the iPhone 4 cheaper than you though. Oh, well.”
mitzimae said, “I love how everyone is bitching about 4S vs. 5. It has all the specs everyone has been talking about with the exception of LTE and all you care about are two characters silk-screened on the case? LMAO.”
dcompart said, “Please, Apple. Bring something else besides the iPhone 4S. The boat is sinking and I'm about to Jump Ship! The iPhone 5 better have a different design, the glass back and reception issues kept me a way from upgrading to the iPhone 4 and this will put the nail in the coffin.”
fellows100 said, “I want it for the 8 megapixel camera alone. Cell phones are now officially as good as my actual camera. It’s like buying a new camera with a free cell phone and little computer attached. All for $200? Deal.”
Harrycarry said, “It was all a sham, shame on you apple. You could have released this three months ago and in 8 months you will have the iphone 5. Anyone buys this one is an Apple sucker and should wait for the true next gen in order to stick it to Apple.”
phila1776 said, “I can limp along with my iPhone 3G no longer (it is insanely slow on IOS4, which most apps require now). It was folly to bypass the 4 when I became eligible for a new phone at $199 this past Feb, but I kept hearing the iPhone 5 was right around the corner. First March, then April, then September...now this. It's good enough, but had I known it would be this little, this late, I'd have gotten the 4 and be more patiently waiting for the 5 right now. Perhaps they're not done announcing new iPhones today, but if the 5 isn't here, it's the 4s for me, which will have to keep me until the 6.”
toomanynames said, “Is it just me or is this a fairly major disappointment?”
yeshia said, “All this hype and waiting for a re-release of the IPhone 4 with a better battery... lame.”
fellows100 said, “You have to admit, nobody follows new Android releases. CNN has been following iPhone 5 rumors for months now. Apple really is a marketing genius.”
Harrycarry said, “And they expect to beat the iphone 4 sales of 1.5 million on the first day? I am a loyal iPhone user however I hope this one bites them in the butt. Three months longer then usual to release the same phone? They must think we are idiots or something.”

Y'know, I was hoping for a "5" on the back, just like everyone else. And yes, I'm a little crestfallen. I WANTED that little "5". But this is still a pretty amazing device.
And to all those people bragging about how the other mfg's phones are better, are those phones really innovating? Sure, maybe, here and there, and maybe Siri is the second girl to that particular party. But it's Apple (and Steve, rest his soul) that has been setting the targets. All these other guys have done, for the most part, is hit his targets–after he did it first.
The iPhone 4s is the iPhone 5 in all but name and screen size. Everything else anyone was guessing would be in the iPhone 5 is in there. Regarding the version number, that doesn't actually do anything to make the phone better. So that's a non-issue. As to the screen size, it may be that Apple understands that the optimum screen size is one that displays sufficient information while fitting both the hand and the pocket. Anything larger will not add value to the user, to the battery life, or to Apple's bottom line.
The Siri voice recognition/synthesis further degrades the value of a larger screen and might be worth more than people know. Imagine driving along in your car and you want to send or read a text message. This is not a good idea with existing phones. It could get you pulled over in some states or even dead (in any state). With the iPhone 4s you can both dictate text messages and listen to those you receive, hands free. Imagine that the phone rings. Today you have to take your eyes off the road to see who is calling. Not with the 4s. Siri: "You have a call coming in." You: "Who is it?" Siri: "Your boss. Should I put him on speaker?" You: "Yes, put him through. Hey boss, what's up?" This capability could save you from being distracted and that could save your life.

i love his old hairy balls
I have a 4 that's only 6 months old, so I'm not upgrading. On the other hand, my husband upgraded his 3G to the 4S, so I've gotten to play with it. Sure, we were disappointed that they didn't update the look (the glass back looks pretty, but is heavy and fragile), but the phone pretty much rocks, in every other way. Disappointed? No, not really.
At last! Someone who undetsarnds! Thanks for posting!
