Pakistan to charge doctor who helped U.S. find bin Laden with treason

A commission is recommending treason charges against a doctor suspected of helping the CIA target Osama bin Laden, Pakistan's information ministry said Thursday.

"A case of conspiracy against the state of Pakistan and high treason is made" against Dr. Shakeel Afridi, the information ministry said, summarizing a commission's investigation into the death of the al Qaeda leader.

The recommendation is nonbinding and it is unclear whether the government will act on it.

Afridi is accused of helping the CIA use a vaccination campaign to try to collect DNA samples from people who lived in bin Laden's compound.

Enough is enough. Why are we putting up with this third rate country? Pull all economic help we are giving to them and take whatever action necessary to protect our interest in the area.

David R "whatever action" ! You mean invade another country which is the 6th largest in the world by population. Or tell them to cut off the supply routes for our troops in Afghanistan who get 80% of their supplies through 1200 miles long supply line which is protected only by Pakistani troops! are your really that ignorant or you get paid for anti-Pakistan propaganda?

This is proof that it is time for America to reconsider our friendship with pakistan. In addition, anybody that is helping us, should be brought here after helping us. This doc and the home owners NEVER should have been left there.
Perhaps we can buy their freedoms. If not, it is time to consider grabbing them.

I actually use to support Pakistan even when they seemed shadey because I knew how much they had risked in helping us stage for the invasion of Afghanistan. But now they have gone too far and it is time we send them a very clear message of what is and isn't acceptable. True.. we don't want a fight on yet another front but we pretty much already have it so let's engage our friends from India and say have at it and see how quickly the Pakistan issue is settled.

Really!!!!!!!!!! Obama has done a lot more to weaken the Al qaeda than any other president. Bin Laden and Al Awaki the two most wanted terrorists were eliminated under Obama's directions. I don't remember any notable terrorist Bush was able to get. And by the way this is not about partisan politics. This is about national security and about US commitment to people who helps this nation. We need to stand up for them and defeat the supporters of terrorism wherever they are hiding. And currently almost all of them are in Pakistan.

Everyone has mentioned things Obama has done to show he's not weak, but you're all forgetting the pirates. Don't forget the pirates, mateys. Anyone who says Obama has been weak on terrorists is a brainwashed fool. Obviously.

It is time we recognized Pakistan for what it is: state sponsor of terrorism. It is unbelievable that they would try a person for treason because he helped to eliminate the worst present day terrorist in the world. which they shelter known terrorists who have created havoc in neighboring countries, Europe and America. This is enough reason to label this country a sponsor of terrorism. Any country which supports fight against terrorism would have hailed this doctor as a hero. America and the civilized nations of this world cannot let this happen. The Pakistani leaders should be held accountable for their clear support of terrorism.

That was the only useful thing you ever did.

This sounds like trumped up charges drummed up by Pakistani anti-vaccination hysterics against a doctor whom the information minister can get political points by persecuting.

It's ridiculous to think the CIA would believe bin laden would show up to get vaccinated and even more ridiculous to think such a plan is what actually helped find him.

No one thought Bin Laden would show up for a vaccination – LOL – it is the story they used for the good Dr to get DNA samples from his siblings to match to BL's once he was dead.
