Israel, Hamas: Gilad Shalit to be swapped for Palestinian prisoners

[Updated at 3:43 p.m. ET] Israeli Army Radio reports that the exchange could involve the release of 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, including women and children.

Israeli media are reporting that Hamas will soon announce the names of Palestinian prisoners that Israel will release in exchange for the return of captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

[Updated at 3:22 p.m. ET] Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at a cabinet meeting Tuesday that Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit - captured in Israel in June 2006 by Palestinian militants - will be returning to Israel in the next couple of days after a prisoner exchange with the Palestinians was brokered to release his freedom.

"We will return Gilad healthy and whole to his family and all of Israel," Netanyahu said. "The negotiations were difficult... we had to make difficult decisions but (the) correct one. With all the change taking place in the Middle East we did not know if a better deal or any deal would have been possible."

[Updated at 3:00 p.m. ET] A tweet from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says: "We have concluded ardeous negotiations with #Hamas to release #Gilad #Shalit. He will be coming home in the next few days."

A following tweet said: "the agreement to release #Shalit was signed in initials last Thursday and today was signed formally by the two parties."

[Updated at 2:54 p.m. ET] A deal has been brokered to exchange Palestinian prisoners for Gilad Shalit, Hamas military wing spokesman Abu Obeida confirmed to CNN.

[Posted at 2:23 p.m. ET] Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called a government meeting at 8 p.m. Tuesday to discuss the possible release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, an Israeli government official told CNN.

The official said Netanyahu would not have called such a meeting unless he thought that the proposals for Shalit's release were serious.

Click here for more about Shalit.

Shalit was captured in Israel in June 2006 by Palestinian militants after they tunneled into the Jewish state and attacked an Israeli army outpost killing two soldiers.

Since then, he has been held incommunicado by Hamas, the movement that controls the Palestinian territory of Gaza. There have been ongoing attempts to broker a deal to release Shalit, and they have failed. The Israeli government and Hamas have not agreed on the numbers and terms for the release of Palestinian prisoners held by Israel in exchange for Shalit. In October 2009, Hamas released a tape of Shalit to prove he was still alive in exchange for the release of a number of Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli jails.

@COUNTRYCOOK...you mean how Jesus referred to Jewish leaders as son's of Satan? Or how in all of Jesus' years of preaching christianity to the jews, only about 120 converted. The rest formed mobs and threw rocks at him. Even after he died, rich jews hunted christians for sport. The apostle Paul admitted that when he was a Jewish leader(Pharisee) he was one of the best at hunting-down and murdering christians for what they were saying. But he got converted, and finished exposing the jews, along with all others whose personal choices determine how God views them.

Paul's supposed conversion experience occurred while he was on the road to Damascus on a mission for whom? The high priest (Kohen Gadol). At this point in history, the office of high priest was controlled by the Sadducees, bitter enemies of the Pharisees. So who was Paul? Why would a Pharisee be working for the high priest at this time? Seems like he didn't know what he was talking about.

#1: The Christians were the ones who were hunting, burning and brutally murdering Jews for the fun of it; killing them in the cruelest of ways.
#2: Anti -Semitic, Anyone? Well, if there weren't Jews you wouldn't have a computer, neither a light bulb, or a religion.
Albert Einstein was Jewish...and so was Jesus...REMEMBER?
You are obviously an un-educated and anti-semitic, cold hearted Christian.
You know what's the funniest thing about all of this? You probably don't even bother dragging your big fat ass to church every Sunday.

Reading what has been posted, it sounds like children around 12 to 15 years old writing. Also, the postings are from people not from the USA.

One day, you will have to deal with your God (which is the same the Jewish people worship) and he will deal with you.

So, keep talking back Christian and Jews and the lord will see that you will have a very short life.

"All men are created equal"..."God has turned his attention to the nations[away from Israel] to call-out from them a people for his name."..."Vengeance is MINE sayeth the Lord[not Israel/USA's]"...."Those who live by the sword shall perish by the sword [of the Lord]"....need i continue to expose jews and phony christians who place their hopes for the future, not in God, but in Wars? Common sense should tell you these things.

That's a really weird thought. Do you mean to say that people who claim to obey a God who calls us all his children, should treat each other with kindness the way we want our kids to? You mean no killin' and stuff? Huh....

Funny how all the wealth in the M.E. and not a dime forthcoming form the arabs to invest in the Palestinian people. Sure, they'll ship tons of weapons into the region, why should they get their own hands dirty in the fight to eradicate Israel? Proxy wars are so much more convenient. Be honest now, if a couple of sheikhs decided to do the palestinians a solid and lend them a few billion do you think they would spend it on fixing their shi thole up a little? Hmmm, prolly not. I bet you'd soon find a lot more local bomb making factories around though...and some fancy new homicide bombing vests. Go palestine!

Well its good that Gilad Shalit would be home soon to be with his family. I am happy for them.
I just hope that a day like this also dawns for the thousands of palestinians including teenage boys, langushing in Israeli military jails.
That brave Israeli woman Naomi Lalo of the jewish Israeli group that monitors military courts would give you the harrowing details of 'experiences' that 12-14 years palestinian boys have to go through in Israeli military prisons wothout legal recourse.

well maybe the thousands of Palestinians are in jail for a reason? I GET IT....You aren't that SMART. But please, try and THINK, maybe get your facts right, and then talk about Palestinians in Israeli Jail.
I don't want to know What Gilad Shalit has gone through...screw the Palestinians, they are all crazy wack jobs who invest all their money in bombs to kill the Jews.

Once again, palestinianes prove that their lives are worth less than Israeli lives. The entire state of Israel came together to free one harmless soldier, and the entire palestinian leadership are prowd of a thowsand murderes who did nothing to inprove the state of their people.
Say what you will about this conflict – the Israelis will return to their cosy homes and continue to thrive, and the palestinians will still be in the same position.
The only thing is that they will never blame their rediculous leadership, only Israel.

  15. Women and children?? Give me a break

"Including women and children" – how biased can CNN get, using the first line of the article to present the Palestinian prisoners as innocent lambs, when in fact the reason it took so long to reach the deal is that Hamas insisted on releasing arch-murderers who planned suicide bombing inside Israel which killed hundreds of Israeli civilians – babies included. These prisoners are serving multiple life sentences for a very good reason – they're not innocent children!!!

    October 11, 2011 at 5:31 pm | Report abuse |
    • FAB

How can you consider that a bias? And how are children arch-murderers?

And in all seriousness, how can you legitimately take the stance that Palestinians are evil and Israelis are innocent? It is a fact that Palestinians are occupied, ALL, not just the few who are actively against Israel. Lets be fair now, sir.
