Man charged in California salon shooting

[Updated at 3:42 p.m. ET] Prosecutors will seek the death penalty against a 42-year-old southern California man charged Friday with murder in this week's mass shooting at a hair salon, Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said.

Scott Evans Dekraai of Huntington Beach, California, allegedly shot his ex-wife and seven other people to death at the Salon Meritage in the small, coastal community of Seal Beach, Rackauckas told reporters Friday. A ninth person was wounded.

Prosecutors formally filed charges of eight counts of first-degree murder and a felony count of attempted murder against Dekraai on Friday. The first-degree murder charges carry the special circumstance of multiple murder, the prosecutor said.

Dekraai and his ex-wife, Michelle Fournier, were in a custody battle over their 8-year-old son and the dispute was the motive in the shooting, Rackauckas said. The prosecutor called Dekraai "a methodical and merciless killer.

note: this post is about the *seal beach* shooting: if you want the truth seeking background story of WHY scott Dekraai went violent, google * "Piper Cameron tug boat accident" * and this article of 07' actually named (shooter)Scott Dekraai by name (4 years ago) as an accident victim and nearly had his right leg severed, PTSD of the horror/emotional pain he went thru. sad story. Thoughts and prayers to the victims.

That is just an excuse, he was screwed up before. don't let him use PTSD as and excuse, he was an unstable sociopath before.

'HORROR/EMOTIONAL PAIN' my ^&^&^^. The PTSD "EXCUSE" is given to much credit. Being involved in an accident (when it was not even his fault) is part of life, he had no control over the situation. 99.9999999999% of people would be able to live through it with 'NO EMOTIONAL SCARS'. He was just an idiot nut ball, pure and simple. His defense attorney will milk the PTSD angle for all it's worth though.

His leg wasn't severed. Articles stated the injury was 'severe', but that doesn't mean the leg was severed (it was only broken). Still, a broken leg is no excuse to murder 8 people in cold blood. I hope they do succeed in giving this guy the death penalty. Good riddance to another piece of crap this world doesn't need.

Seriously, you're giving this person who just murdered 8 people a pass due to tugboat PTSD? This is the dumbest comment I've read on the entire internet in a long time...and there are plenty of morons out there. You just happen to earn the number one spot.

The crimes this man committed weren't an accident. Animals or property wasn't the recepient of this man's violence. It was people. It's a huge leap to murder people. Victoria, I hope you never have to experience the pain and suffering the families are now experiencing due to this man, but if you do, then you can comment about excusing this man for his brutality. If you're a family member of one of those slain, then you can be in the position to forgive.

Seriously...your trying to "justify" or excuse this cretin's actions? Wow, I guess there really is NO personal responsibility for anything any longer.

Sure, tug boat accident and PTSD. The other guy in the tug boat accident died. People dying around him. Was it someone he knew and was "angry" at? Perhaps they should look into this "accident" too.

What an idiot. If you're upset with your wife, get her. You don't just mow down 7 innocent people who have nothing to do with your sorry ass situation. They should allow the families of the victims to execute this clown in a firing squad.

One family member from each victim should be allowed to take a gun and shoot him in a place where he can feel the paid but it doesn't kill him. The state will have lethal injection that will take care of that.

Most of the time guys who are hell bent on killing everyone they see wind up offing themselves. This guy quietly surrendered. Since he is in California he will spend the next 20 years on death row courtesy of the tax payers. When the case is as cut and dry as this, he should get one appeal, and a one way ticket to the death chamber.

I kept up with this story through the LATimes.com. He shot nine people and eight died. The nineth person was critical, she was a 73 yr. old mother of one of the stylists who had stopped in to say hi to her daughter. The daughter was killed. The wife of Randy Fannis, the owner of the salon, was mixing a treatment for her patron, and was not shot, her husband was killed. He was a much loved person in that area of Seal Beach, as were all of them. The killer shot his exwife second, the owner first, and kept shooting. The ex-wife and he were divorced and having a bad custody battle going on over their eight yr. old son. They had one son between them, and the shooter was again married with one child with his new wife. He evidently had mental issues and was not to carry guns. His grandparents were loved in this area and had a special memorial in a park close by at Seal Beach. The last article said all these people knew each other, because of living in area for many yrs. He also killed another stylist and friend of his murdered ex-wife who had been a wittness for the ex-wife. There were a lot of heros in this massacre, people helping people.
