Man charged in California salon shooting

[Updated at 3:42 p.m. ET] Prosecutors will seek the death penalty against a 42-year-old southern California man charged Friday with murder in this week's mass shooting at a hair salon, Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said.

Scott Evans Dekraai of Huntington Beach, California, allegedly shot his ex-wife and seven other people to death at the Salon Meritage in the small, coastal community of Seal Beach, Rackauckas told reporters Friday. A ninth person was wounded.

Prosecutors formally filed charges of eight counts of first-degree murder and a felony count of attempted murder against Dekraai on Friday. The first-degree murder charges carry the special circumstance of multiple murder, the prosecutor said.

Dekraai and his ex-wife, Michelle Fournier, were in a custody battle over their 8-year-old son and the dispute was the motive in the shooting, Rackauckas said. The prosecutor called Dekraai "a methodical and merciless killer.

This saddens me so much. This selfish jerk not only deprived 8 people of their lives, but he has also deprived his 8 year old son of both parents. How horrible!

This senseless act is just one more example of why the government should stop the private ownership of firearms. The Federal Government should forcibly take from all citizens any firearms they are recorded to have. Why should anyone have the need for a gun? Guns are only meant to kill people. Throughout history governments have shown that they are very good stewards at taking care of their citizens. Great examples are Hitler and his Nazi regime during WWII. When he first took power he said why does anyone need guns? The German people will be much safer without guns. Also look at Stalin with his control of people in the USSR. Hey wait a minute! Hitler and Stalin's governments killed millions of their own citizens. Okay well forget the idea of disarming everyone. Okay how about the police. Yeah that is it! The police can protect us. But wait a minute by the time they arrived at the Salon everyone was already shot.
Ohhhh. The police can't protect us. Well I want someone to protect me! Gee I guess I am stuck having to take care of myself. But how can I protect myself? Well ultimately I will need to own a firearm and learn how to use it. If everyone in the Salon were legally carrying concealed firearms they could have stopped this nut much earlier and reduced the numbers killed. But wait a second? Gov Gerry Brown has outlawed the carrying of even unloaded weapons in public. He would not have to worry about such things if people were able to carry concealed legally like in most states of the US. Sadly most people have the mindset they need the police to protect them and can't do it themselves. Plus many people think the state has the right to tell them what they can and can't do regarding firearms and the 2nd Amendment.
Do you know the police among themselves call the public Chattle meaning sheep. Do not trust your government to tell you what you can and can't do for self protection. Take care of yourselves people and fight back for your rights. Don't vote for anti-self protection judges, politicians, etc. Fight back and vote for those who will protect your rights!!!

      BOB MORGAN!!!!!! READ!!!!!!

you and all the others who feel that there should be no guns allowed are retards....if all the law abiding people give up their guns.....do you think all the thugs will give them up too? I bet not, that’s why they are criminals....they break the laws. So you would have just the bad guys having guns and the cops. You see where that got these nice people in the salon....dead. To bad one of those nice people did not have a concealed weapons license....and had the weapon on them, they might have been able to save some lives. I carry and have a shoot gun by my bed, my kids know how to handle them and if someone breaks into my house.......they won't be victims like the rest of you would......you libs need to learn to be much more self reliant....take care of you and your own....don't be afraid of the big bad world....:o)

@ Bob Morgan: What the he!! are you talking about? Your whole nonsensical rant is contradictory and goes nowhere. You sound a little like the loose cannons who pull tragic stunts like this. There are reasons for- and against-citizens owning guns. For one thing, it is our right to protect ourselves and from your rant, I'd have reason to worry about protecting myself from delusional bipolar people like you.

They should make it more difficult to get and own guns, but possible for smart, law abiding people and increase punishment for illegal ownership of them.

um... i think bob morgan was being slightly sarcastic. you people calling him an idiot have missed the point, as idiotic as all the points any of you is attempting and failing to make, it is nonetheless pretty obvious when he starts talking about hitler and stalin as being good stewards of the people. duh.

Couple of things – Reading a post long as Bob's is more than a lot of folks will do on a thread, so they missed his sarcasm in the beginning of the post.

Of course the nimrod who referred to Bob as a liberal is either a moron or an idiot or someone who wasn't willing to read the entire post but felt compelled to comment any way – OR all 3...

the death penalty in California means nothing. He'll languish in prison & the case will be appealed over & over. Meanwhile, the tax payers will be shelling out not only the $40,000 a year to subsidize his prison existence, but to keep the appeals process churning. It's an abomination. Essentially, he'll have gotten away with murder & be accommodated with food/housing during a tough economy.

At least the advocates of the "right to bear arms" should shut up for a least a week to let this cool down. They are on the radio at once making sure that all of us can have our dozen or so guns in our houses. Geesh!

You misunderstand the concept of a right to bear arms actually it does not go as far as it should people should be able to carry weapons openly but only after a seriously in depth psychological evaluation and thorough training with refresh training and psychological evaluations at regular intervals.

The problem with jerks like this is that no matter what gun laws are in effect, they will always find a weapon, legally or illlegally. Does anyone really believe that this guy gave two thoughts about gun use before he blew 8 people away? Guaranteed it was the last thing on his mind.

I like your proposal I would add that (since this is a gun related crime) first he must perform service to our country carrying a weapon and manning a post on the front line of whatever war we are fighting. If he is wounded he is patched up and sent back to the front until his 10 years of service on the front line expires or he is killed then (if he survives) sent to the labor camp you discuss.

Pondering what the outcome would have been if our societal norms were that most people (out and about in the community in public) carry fire arms and are trained to use them. My guess is he would have settled his grievance another way in private away from the public.
On a side note if I were one of the victims surviving relatives I would be looking at what medications the perpetrator was taking and talking directly to those who are responsible for monitoring his well being while on the prescribed meds. My guess is (if he is even taking any meds) that he is not managed properly and his meds have been switched multiple times. Just a guess.

He should feel really stupid right about now. Not only has he taken the life of his child's mother, but 8 other innocent people as well..... and to boot he still will not have custody because the idiot will be in prison!!.I can understand why the mother was no longer married to this fool...just once I would like for people to think before they act. Really sad!!!!

By the accounts in the media the ex wife was afraid and had insight into this act as pending and it would seem not many took her seriously. So my take is that people in general are afraid to confront those in our society that have gone wrong and are either afraid or clueless on how to take measures to take risky people off the streets. I'll give you a hint in today's society you can't do anything now days without getting sued and law enforcement cannot budge until an act has been committed and a law has been broken. So basically we have a "reactive" based system of consequences.

"Anybody", that is because we live in a free society in which one cannot be locked up simply because they "might" cause a crime. What you are proposing is very Orwellian. Our founding fathers felt it was better to let a dozen guilty people free than to incarcerate or execute even one innocent person. This is the very core of the American way. You may want to move to a country in the middle east where they regularly convict and execute people before they commit a crime, just because they believe differently and therefore might be a threat later on. Just don't be surprised when they throw you in prison because you might do something.

I'm with you banasy. If the situation in his messed up mind was so bad that he needed to shoot her why everyone else? Unless he was so intent on pulling the trigger by the time he got there anything in his brain that would stop him from shooting others was trumped. Hopefully an in-depth psych profile will be done so we can better understand.

Agreed! His issue was with his ex. His rage should have been contained between those two.
Unfortunately, innocent victims were senselessly killed and their child is the real loser in this, too.

This guy was caught basically red-handed. He definitely had the motive. He was seen fleeing the scene. They found the guns in his car and gun powder residue on his hands. This guy should be put to death tomorrow but I'm sure the trial will go one forever and then there will be appeal after appeal. Finally, maybe in 20 years he will finally get what he deserves.

we all know exactly what happens when a bunch of rednecks get together with guns.. it's called a militia, dummy! ever heard of Waco? and your comparisons to stalin and hitler are far removed for many reasons... it's sad how you right wing nuts always compare everybody to hitler...
