Janitor finds mentally disabled people chained in basement; 3 arrested

Three suspects accused of chaining mentally disabled people and stealing their Social Security checks were arrested in Philadelphia.

They were arrested Friday after a janitor doing checks at a building found four victims - a 29-year-old woman, and three men, ages 31, 35 and 31 - locked up in a basement boiler room at a Philadelphia residence, said Lt. Ray Evers, a police spokesman. The janitor released the four and called police.

Authorities believe the victims had been trapped in the tiny room for up to a week. Evers said they suffered from bed sores and "injuries that are very, very hard to describe."

    Who was taking care of these mentally disabled people? Were they living on their own & why? Were the perps care takers too? That would make it even worse.

    @ Chrissy
    Chrissy forget about Philip, what about the video of Bayer distributing these HIV tainted Pharmaceuticals.
    Everyone should know about this, as I have watched the video just now. It's incredible, Bayer is actually doing this and getting away with it.

    @Denver Dave:
    Unfortunately, this is happening all over America due to budget cuts.
    One of the first things to go is help for the mentally ill.
    A pity, too, because SO many people need that help, and cannot get it.
    Although warehousing the mentally ill is not the answer, obviously chaining them to radiators aren't either...
    Are you in favor of legalizing pot?
    That would cut down on crime immensely.
    Slap a tax on it, and America solves a lot of it's debt problems, also.

    banasy, we have always had the mentally ill to deal with. But now we are being forced to house criminals who claim innocence because of being under the influence of prescription meds when they committed their crimes. our state hospitals aren't overcrowded with mentally challenged individuals. They are overcrowded with criminals who have found a way to go to hospital to await trial rather than going to jail to do so.

    Any mentally challenged individual requiring adult supervsion and power of attorney to conduct their affairs and assests should have an independent advocate to monitor the caregivers...c'mon people...
