Memorial service celebrates life of racer Dan Wheldon

The racing sanctioning body IndyCar held a public memorial service, punctuated by laughter and tears, Sunday to celebrate the life of two-time Indianapolis 500 champ Dan Wheldon.

Those at the memorial, held at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, recalled Wheldon not only as a successful driver, but remembered his winning charm, his sense of humor, and his devotion to his family and his fans.

Wheldon, 33, was near the back of a 34-car field at the Las Vegas Indy 300 on October 16 when he got mixed up in a crash that saw several cars spin out of control and burst into flames, spewing smoke and debris. He died of head injuries.

"The victories and the accolades, they didn't define him," said IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard. "His strong character, his enthusiastic approach to life, and the love of family, friends and fans did."

  3. My heart leaks when they die.

Not when they're alive though! Ain't got a clue about them other than what I've been told.when they're alive. Take Gadhafi, for example. He was one of the worst dictators for many years just like Dan Wheldon was one of the best drivers for many years, yet few of us regular "news bloggers" have much to say about how their carreers began or what exactly sustained their top-level performances during their chosen careers. But when these men die it's either "ding dong the witch is dead" by mentally challened munchkins, or "Awe, so sad. So very very sad. Hope his family is ok" by the same munchkins posing as wise men. Either way, munchkins compelled to show a public face of sorrow for the oppressed while pretending to be among them, or happiness at the news of a complete strangers death they never took the time to find-out about. You don't knoweither of these men at all in reality, yet in fantasy land, you think that you know them well enough to crash their funerals! (look for this one on your CNN 'post of the day

  4. Funeral Crashers

Do not strangers attending a funeral sit in the back and keep their mouth's shut amd listen to those who knew the man well speak? Not on these "news blogs". Do people listening in on Presidential debates not do the same, given the fact that the vast majority only know what they've been told about the men on stage, and so shut their mouths as these men speak. But now we have 'town hall' style "debates" where the moderator is a dummy making way for the other dummies to speak their mindless BS. Get a clue before you open that piehole. (Who is "you"? If the shoe fits, wear it by taking these words personal)

  7. Mmmmm

Well, let us not forget he made his life contribution as a public figure in the entertainment industry as a car racer. It is a good thing to bury the dead and it is also a good thing if a stranger attends, not in curiosity, but with condolences, support, and prayers...it is an act of charity and mercy to do so...it is ignorant and in poor taste to scorn those acts...
