Rights group: Bodies of 53 apparent Gadhafi loyalists found in Libyan hotel

The bodies of 53 people, believed to be supporters of ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, has been found in a hotel that was under the control of anti-Gadhafi fighters, Human Rights Watch said Monday.

The rights group said it found the bodies clustered together at Hotel Mahari in Sirte on Sunday. About 20 residents were putting the bodies in body bags to prepare them for burial when Human Rights Watch found them.

"We found 53 decomposing bodies, apparently (Gadhafi) supporters, at an abandoned hotel in Sirte, and some had their hands bound behind their backs when they were shot," said Peter Bouckaert, emergencies director of Human Rights Watch.

"This requires the immediate attention of the Libyan authorities to investigate what happened and hold accountable those responsible."

Officials with the National Transitional Council, Libya's new leadership, were not immediately available for comment.

The residents told Human Rights Watch investigators they found the bodies last week after the fighting in Sirte stopped and they returned home.

They identified some of the deceased as Sirte residents and Gadhafi supporters.

Sirte, Gadhafi's hometown, was one of the last cities to fall before the National Transitional Council declared the country liberated Sunday following Gadhafi's 42-year rule.

However, anti-Gadhafi fighters from Misrata had controlled the area of Sirte where the hotel is located since early October, Human Rights Watch said, citing witnesses.

Is this what Libyans fought for? Is this what Libyans died for? Is this what NATO bombed for? => Polygamy, purportedly for the sake of women: http://andreasmoser.wordpress.com/2011/10/24/libya-freedom-polygamy/

But that is strange. That's far more than evidence of human dead found at the mass graves laid at Gaddafi's door.

@yada, I think an English major or minnor is no loger required to be a reporter or a journlist any more, just so they can use a phone.

Blood lust of us humans is simply apalling. And we are given to rejoice over blood shed.
    @ Scottish Mama
Rightly said. War is just a manifestation of the dark side of humanity. Greed & lust for power the driving forces. Death , destruction & misery the result.

some very interesting facts (?) I came across about Libya under Ghaddafi. Though only a Libyan can say if all of this is correct.

There is no electricity bill, its free
there is no interest on loans for libyans
To own a Home is considered a human right
Newly weds recieve equiv. of $ 60,000 to buy an apartment to start their life together
Education & medical is free. Literacy rate is 83%
If a libyan wantsto get into a farming career he would recieve farming land, equipment, livestock, seeds etc for free including a farm house to kick start his career
To go abroad for higher education a libyan recieves funding plus $ 2'300. pm as accomodation & car allowance
Gas is 0.14 cents a litre
Libya has no external debt & reserves of $ 150 billion now frozen world wide
If a libyan cannot get employment after grad he/she gets equiv of average salary of the job they were looking for till they get employed
A portion of Libya's oil sales are directly credited to evry citizen's account
A Libyan woman gets $ 5000 when she gives birth to a child
can someone verify all this. I think a Libyan wouldn't on the pain of being shot in the head.

A libyan buys a car & the state subsidizes 50% of the cost

In 1969 when Qadaffy first came to power in Libya, saywhat, the litteracy rate in Libya was only 18% and now it's 83%. How will the right-wing news media explain that one away???
