Last rare rhinoceros in Vietnam killed by poacher, group says

Vietnam's rare Javan rhinoceros was declared extinct in that area after poachers killed the last remaining animal in the country for its horns, the World Wildlife Fund said.

“Vietnam must see this loss as another warning sign of its looming wave of species extinctions,” Dr. Barney Long, WWF’s Asian species expert, said in a statement. “The single most important action that is needed to save remaining threatened species like tigers and elephants is protection.”

The country had been struggling to keep the population alive amid widespread poaching that the WWF said was the cause of many Asian rhino species being brought to the "brink of extinction."

The WWF said people in certain parts of Asia believe the horns, when ground down and dissolved in boiling water, help treat typhoid fever or even cancer, the WWF said, noting that there has been no scientific proof of that.

The group said trying to bring the species back into the area won't work.

“Reintroduction of the rhinoceros to Vietnam is not economically or practically feasible," WWF’s Asian Elephant and Rhino Program Coordinator Dr. Christy Williams said.  "It is gone from Vietnam forever."

So now, the Javan rhino only exists in one area in the world, according to the WWF.

The Javan rhinoceros is in danger of becoming extinct.

The group reported that there is one population of less than 50 animals in the Ujung Kulon National Park in Java, Indonesia. Now, workers will turn their attention there, working with anti-poaching patrols to hopefully keep the species from going extinct.

“For the Javan rhino, we now have to focus entirely on one site in Indonesia where strengthened protection is needed along with fast-tracking the proposed translocation and habitat management,” Long said.

We should capture poachers and let them loose in the wild with rhinos and tigers. Ok, let them loose with the Komodo dragons. More dramatic that way. Soon, poaching business will be extinct.

$4000 per ounce is powerful incentive for those who struggle to survive. Between this and shark fin soup and other nonsense humans have dreamed up, we are effectively extinguishing numerous species. 40 million, yes, million, sharks are killed solely for their dorsal fins. THAT is obscene.

Then why the current controversy in China over the baby that was run over in the street repeatedly and left to die until a passerby rescued him. He later died in hospital. Much soul searching in China now, and the driver was caught on a security cam and is now under arrest. We should watch the trial. Look again at Viet-Nam, which DID stop the genocides in Cambodia by Pol Pot's murderous gang. That took four hundred thousand troops and several months to do it. For Viet Nam to do this was a supreme sacrifice of their taxpayers' money, a sacrifice for which they recieved NO thanks from the world.

The child killed was female, Chester. In my opinion that was why the toddler was ignored by Chinese people walking by. By their own culture, females have little to no value. Good thing this child wasn't male, the people who ran "him" over multiple times would probably been summarily put against a wall and shot, and the executed persons family would have had to pay the Gov't the cost of the rounds needed.

      Nice country, huh?

It's easy to forget all the atrocities that occur here in America when we are so diluted with so much information, but I seem to recall in a few hospitals mind you, that injured and needy people were left in the waiting rooms with no care being administered, and they were allowed to die. To me that seems a little cruel and inhumane, here we are arguing about abortion issues (the right to life), and everyone is willing to forget about the elderly in the expiring times of their lives like their's was of little to no value so take away their retirement funds, their healthcare and in some cases thier utlities so they can freeze during the winter for the inability to pay bills with meager incomes. We all need to do better!

It's a problem all over the world, but there is no question misinformation that is not being corrected in Asian countries regarding these foolish beliefs in medicinal benefits of horns/tusks is a heavy burden for animals across the globe. If it's incredibly rare and on the verge of extinction (such as elephants and tigers in many parts of the world), the Asian population wants to grind down their parts and consume them. What can you do?

Given the choice between feeding your family and the life of an animal – even if said animal is rare, I can think of where 90% of would choose. These aren't rich folks looking for more $. It's basic survival – for most of these folks. Target the rich folks that buy this stuff – a rhino horn probably costs ALOT as do shark fins, and other rare animal parts.

You can get rhino horn powder for pennies in most of these Asian countries. They aren't killing for food ,that I could understand, they are killing for profit. The fact that small change is big money for these people is where the problem lay.

You know if the environmentalists really wanted to SAVE these animals you must remove the cause. These animals are hunted because they believe the horn to get them "up" if you will. Send a ton of affordable Viagra to these countries and get them to switch over. That would save thousands of animals.

I think we can all come up with examples of human depravity for any race. Especially against animals. To label an entire race as "not giving a crap about life" is an inflammatory and racist comment. There certainly seems to be a need for more teaching about environmental and animal issues and adoption of stricter laws in that respect in Asia. We all have our faults. There are many great things about the Asian culture that Western culture could stand to adopt and vice versa. So let's put away the name calling, and act like adults.
