Last rare rhinoceros in Vietnam killed by poacher, group says

Vietnam's rare Javan rhinoceros was declared extinct in that area after poachers killed the last remaining animal in the country for its horns, the World Wildlife Fund said.

“Vietnam must see this loss as another warning sign of its looming wave of species extinctions,” Dr. Barney Long, WWF’s Asian species expert, said in a statement. “The single most important action that is needed to save remaining threatened species like tigers and elephants is protection.”

The country had been struggling to keep the population alive amid widespread poaching that the WWF said was the cause of many Asian rhino species being brought to the "brink of extinction."

The WWF said people in certain parts of Asia believe the horns, when ground down and dissolved in boiling water, help treat typhoid fever or even cancer, the WWF said, noting that there has been no scientific proof of that.

The group said trying to bring the species back into the area won't work.

“Reintroduction of the rhinoceros to Vietnam is not economically or practically feasible," WWF’s Asian Elephant and Rhino Program Coordinator Dr. Christy Williams said.  "It is gone from Vietnam forever."

So now, the Javan rhino only exists in one area in the world, according to the WWF.

The Javan rhinoceros is in danger of becoming extinct.

The group reported that there is one population of less than 50 animals in the Ujung Kulon National Park in Java, Indonesia. Now, workers will turn their attention there, working with anti-poaching patrols to hopefully keep the species from going extinct.

“For the Javan rhino, we now have to focus entirely on one site in Indonesia where strengthened protection is needed along with fast-tracking the proposed translocation and habitat management,” Long said.

poachers discuss me, you people making jokes about killing wildlife discuss me. people killing and torturing animals for no reason discuss me. thanks to heartless mean humans all wildlife, no matter where, will soon be gone. humans are the animals, the animals are innocent. these type of people need to be tortured or killed the way they tortured or killed the animals and lets see how they like the feel of it. what goes around comes around.

Lisa, I believe you meant "disgusts" (makes you feel sick) rather than "discuss" (to talk about). Please pardon the snarky responses making fun of your comment, which I think is very valid. Poaching IS disgusting, and there are plenty of people who post outrageous comments here just to get a response, or because they can, or to be rude, or because of immaturity, or because of relative anonymity, or some combination of all of these (and MORE!).

It's incredibly sad to me that the extinction in yet another country of a large mammal could be a joke, but the Java rhino is now down to 50 individuals in Java, Indonesia. This is such a small population that genetic diversity cannot be preserved, and extinction in the wild is most likely inevitable in short order.

Re-introduction of the Java rhino in Vietnam makes no sense for the simple fact that the Vietnamese have indicated their unwillingness to p0rserve the species when it DID exist in the country. To work exhaustively to re-introduce a large animal species is a huge commitment of time, money, personnel and land - It also requires that the population commit to the protection of the species and forgo traditional remedies that sacrifice these endangered animals when scientific research has proven the traditional "cures" ineffective. The likelihood of the confluence of these factors in present-day Vietnam is virtually nil. Resources are better committed to preserving to 50 remaining Java rhinos in Java, Indonesia, and in captive breeding.

Hey, I heard that ground up human testacles, especially from those brave men engaged in poaching, can cure many diseases including asthma, pms, cancer, diabetes, and of course, erectile disfunction. Spread the word.

Chinese "witch" doctors have proof of that. It is a very effective treatment "poachers testicles as well as their eyes" when it is ground up and mixed with 100 proof medicinal Alcohol. Spread the word more effective than Viagra.

"Well, we can't afford blindness anymore. There are tens of thousands of thugs who loathe liberty and love death, and want to annihilate Western civilization".Tony Snow. The blindness that is displayed by the left on the current situation is truly astounding. It is not the banks. It is the government. Please research and look up DODD and Franks and the parts these two corrupt individual played in bringing down our financial system. It is not evil to make a profit. What is evil for a government to steal from one citizen and give to another.

just because the horns are being used to help "cure" illness doesn't mean that's the priority of the poachers. i'm pretty sure they just want to SELL the horns, not cure anyone

In you arrogance, a typical western liberal, who assumes that the west is superior to the rest of the world. How wrong you are. Many of our traditional medicines are far more effective than the junk that pours out of the labs of western society. I have seen white people travel to a small village in Korea, that have to be carried across the rice fields on a stretcher and able to walk out after seven days. He a wise old healer that demands no fee.
