Woman accused of trafficking 30 pounds of cocaine in cake mix boxes

An 18-year-old woman who was arrested after nearly 30 pounds of cocaine was found hidden in cake mix boxes in her suitcase will be charged as an adult, according to a Florida state attorney's office.

Ayesha Niles, who lives in London, was traveling from Jamaica to London with a stopover at Miami International Airport on Friday when she went through a routine luggage check.

"Twenty-four boxes of cake mix in your luggage," Ed Griffith, spokesperson Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office, told CNN. "It just seemed extremely unusual."

It was unusual enough that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agent sent Niles to the inspection area for a second screening.

According to the arrest affidavit the boxes of cake mix contained a total of "+/- 29.30 pounds of powder cocaine." According to the state attorney's office the estimated street value of the cocaine in London is $650,000.00.

The affidavit says Niles told law enforcement that the boxes were placed in her luggage in Jamaica but she was not aware of what the boxes contained.

Niles was arrested on charges of trafficking of cocaine and transporting of a control substance. Niles turned 18 this week and because of her age of majority and the seriousness of the crime the state attorney's office has filed notice that she will be charged as an adult. Niles, who is still in the juvenile system currently, could not be reached for comment.

"This is an extremely serious charge," Griffith said. "She is looking at minimum mandatory prison time upon a conviction."

If convicted Niles could be sentences up to 15 years in prison for each count.

If she was really fat, I would not have considered it unusual.

I went to school with her, she was a really bright girl but she got into trouble, got expelled and ended up pregnant at 14. I was shocked to hear this, I really thought she would be smarter but I hope she doesn't do time, she made a mistake and it's not fair on her son. Honestly, I can't help but feel that she was forced or persuaded to do this, why would she risk so many years in prison?

  2. Largest Drug Bust in US History

The largest drug bust ever involved the DEA accidentlally busting the CIA importing cargo containers full of cocaine in Houston. DEA's by-laws require that the director of the DEA personally see to it that the drugs are disposed of at a federal disposal sight. The director boarded flight from Washington DC bound for Houston. His dead body washed-up on a Virginia beach 2 weeks later. (google keywords and read about it before you post your usual comtempt prior to investigation)

The least you could do is cite names or sources.

  3. Largest Drug Bust in US History

    * drug busts over a certain size, rather, must be disposed of while the DEA's director be personally there to witness.

This whole statement sounds very familiar, like a few looney conspiracy nuts reading a teleprompter, or just parroting each others amazing discoveries. I love that this particular conspiracy fan is completely unaware of the irony in distrusting one type of media only to completely put his faith into random and frequently anonymous Google and you tube postings. In fact, since this advice appears on CNN i should immediately distrust it. Damn this guy and his paradox.

Igor is clearing voting for Herman Cain. How do you live yourself being that dumb? It is a fact that the C.I.A imports cocaine and heroin, and has been since the 80's. Yeah everyone is out to get the poor U.S government. Right. Can I get some of that wasted air you are breathing?

This is just rediculous. This poor girl's life is ruined before it started. And for what? A bunch of people who were gonna do cocaine anyways just got it from somewhere else! New mules who will never hear Miss Niles' story are born EVERY DAY, so her punishment will NEVER be any kind of deterrent. Nothing was accomplished by this bust except for the giant cost to taxpayers to prosecute and incarcerate a young woman who had a bunch of powder on her. Law enforcement's priorities are so far off base it's scary! QUIT the war on drugs, QUIT the war in Iraq. START funding nutritional, healthcare, and educational programs to raise healthy, strong, and educated Americans. START funding alternative/sustainable energy resources. Use prison space for the truly depraved – child molesters! Oh wait, that makes too much sense...
