Woman accused of trafficking 30 pounds of cocaine in cake mix boxes

An 18-year-old woman who was arrested after nearly 30 pounds of cocaine was found hidden in cake mix boxes in her suitcase will be charged as an adult, according to a Florida state attorney's office.

Ayesha Niles, who lives in London, was traveling from Jamaica to London with a stopover at Miami International Airport on Friday when she went through a routine luggage check.

"Twenty-four boxes of cake mix in your luggage," Ed Griffith, spokesperson Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office, told CNN. "It just seemed extremely unusual."

It was unusual enough that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agent sent Niles to the inspection area for a second screening.

According to the arrest affidavit the boxes of cake mix contained a total of "+/- 29.30 pounds of powder cocaine." According to the state attorney's office the estimated street value of the cocaine in London is $650,000.00.

The affidavit says Niles told law enforcement that the boxes were placed in her luggage in Jamaica but she was not aware of what the boxes contained.

Niles was arrested on charges of trafficking of cocaine and transporting of a control substance. Niles turned 18 this week and because of her age of majority and the seriousness of the crime the state attorney's office has filed notice that she will be charged as an adult. Niles, who is still in the juvenile system currently, could not be reached for comment.

"This is an extremely serious charge," Griffith said. "She is looking at minimum mandatory prison time upon a conviction."

If convicted Niles could be sentences up to 15 years in prison for each count.

    @war on drugs...notice that when this phony "war on drugs" was first declared, virtually everyone fell for it. And now, decades later, people hardly ever mention it...pretending that the situation has been handled so there's no need to discuss it further. Along the same lines is this phony "war on terror", as if the deadbolts on their doors were installed to keep Al Quida from gaining entry. Who knows what the next phony war will be? (hint: I do. But it sounds so foreign and crazy, people just laugh it off)

      The people who gave her the drugs are not the idiots who tried taking them over international borders. She knew what she was doing was illegal and she got caught. Too bad and I really have no sympathy for her. She got what she had coming!

    There pumping this poison into every concievable pore in this country trying to kill our kids and collapse our contry while getting rich. As you can see from this artical and the recent coast guard article with the 180 million in cocaine just intercepted the drug dealer will stop at nothing. 15 years for all that cocaine, referring to the 180 million catch, thats worth the risk to a poor person. Want to stop these killers from bringing this poison in.....Make it a capital punishment anything over a gram put them to death. Sounds drasctic well maybe you should take a close up look at this stuff in action. Get off the sofa, stop hiding behind a computer screen, go spend some time on the streets, in the hospitals, in the Morgues, and see if I'm to harsh. Bet that first teenager overdose that comes in will make you think. Its like rat poison to a rat, a slow painful eventual death.

      @Joeyjojo and @TomsofMaine

      thomas, you're either a cop, a rent a cop, or a kid who wants to be a cop, which is great! But your extremely ignorant and narrow viewpoint is really troubling and shows how naive you are. Either way, since both you and youre butt-bud jojo are so very aware and have put yourselves in charge of all that people should or shouldnt and obviously know every mechanism for how everything that's potentially destructive causes these terrible plagues on society!- well, kudos!

      I'm so pleased to hear that both of you measure every portion of every meal to ensure you follow all dietar requirements to a tee, and that you exercise for no less than the recommended amount and intensity without fail every day, and that neither of you has or will ever smoke a cigarette, pipe or cigar, and that neither of you will have a drink.

      Geez, come to think of it..it kind of sounds like you both live by somewhat facist, unflexible rules? Oh right, because that's what people like you who are so sure that they know what's best for everyone else are!! Thanks ids.

    Last week, new census data showed the nation's poverty rate rose to more than 15% , the highest level since 1993. More than 46 million Americans are now considered in poverty, how do they afford to pay for the crystal meth and the coke? One billion hits of crystal meth consumed in any given year in the USA, plus all that cocaine to make them feel invincible.
    No wonder they rage war, war war!

    We know this stuff does not belong to her, she is not smart enough, first of no one not even a baker buys that much cake mix in boxes, and they used her for her age, we need to stop with the foolishness yes she does deserve punishment yet what kind ? and she definitely does not deserve 15 years for the cocaine, it may not even be pure which is so funny that if all of the 29lbs only had 1 ounce or pure mixed in it , it would still be considered 29lbs, she may need to own up to knowing or believing it to be only a few ounces pure and the other boxes were a decoy , that way she can be charge for knowing of a few ounces that is the only way a judge can sentence her to lesser time on a mandatory, unless she becomes an informant which is like bs because if it doesnt net results they will not do anything for her, or she may be forced to lie on an innocent person or entrap someone.
