Alaska faces one of its worst storms ever, forecasters say

Alaska is facing a life threatening winter storm with near hurricane force winds, more than a foot of snow and severe coastal flooding, the National Weather Service says.

"This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening storm which will be one of the worst on record over the Bering Sea and the west coast," NWS forecasters said in a bulletin Monday afternoon.

The storm was about 600 miles southwest of Shemya in the far western Aleutian Islands on Monday afternoon and was expected to move over the Bering Sea toward Alaska's west coast on Tuesday.

Winds near hurricane force of 74 mph were expected to generate seas as high as 25 feet in the northern Bering Sea, forecasters said. The winds were expected to raise sea levels as much as 9 feet in the Norton Sound. Those levels combined with the high waves were expected to cause significant coastal erosion and major flooding. The winds may also push sea ice on shore, adding to the dangers, NWS forecasters said.

Alaska's west coast could also see as much as 14 inches of snow in blizzard conditions, forecasters said. The storm was expected to last into Wednesday.

Ahhh, ehhh, it's Alaska – is this any surprise? Have you ever watched "Deadliest Catch"? Have you ever driven a crappy sleigh powered by reindeer that is in bad need of repairs but not affordable due to the ongoing recession?

If this was in Texas, it would be news. It's not news around here.

Now you all be very, very good for the rest of the year or else Santa won't bring you any presents on Christmas!

If the headline said "Alaska's worst storm in Texas history," it wouldn't be news, but it says "Alaska faces one of it's worst storms ever." I know this may not mean much to us in the lower 48, and maybe Alaskans aren't caring much either, but after experiencing the CT storm a week and a half ago, I can say that we Connecticut people said the same thing..."It's Connecticut...maybe it's a little early, but we always get's no big deal." Well, we should have listened to the forecasters. Hundreds of thousands of people were underprepared because we didn't take the weather seriously. We had the most destructive winter storm in my 40 – year memory. I hope that you are right, and this is "just another storm," but if the forecasters are right, I pray for the population in Alaska to be safe.

"You're calling me Mother Earth? I got news for ya. You've only been here 200,000 years. The dinosaurs were here 825 times longer, for 165 million years – I'm their mother. They died by accident. You? You I'm just gonna kill myself." -Earth

If we are lucky, the storm will take Sarah with it. Oh Wait.. that would actually require her to be in AK. Last I checked she moved to AZ.

I used to live in Alaska...and I must say I'm proud and embarrassed that this made the news. No doubt the size of the storm is newsworthy, but it's also Alaska. From October to early May, we are covered in snow, with 90 mph winds off the Turnagain Arm (in the Anchorage area), 30 ft tides, extreme winds and cold in the interior, etc. Forest fires that occur every year in Alaska are often larger than the rest of the US combined. All in all, Alaska is a rough place to live, but the residents are used to it.
So again, nice to see the report because this happens and often people don't know/realize. But unnecessary at the same time because Alaskans are probably like "Oooh, fun."

And I must add...14 inches? It's a lot, but didn't the east coast have 2ft in a storm last year? Alaskans have sled dogs and's not like this is going to bury them.

True can't be a whiner... remember it's all just experience!!! In the end it probably won't much matter.
