Alaska faces one of its worst storms ever, forecasters say

Alaska is facing a life threatening winter storm with near hurricane force winds, more than a foot of snow and severe coastal flooding, the National Weather Service says.

"This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening storm which will be one of the worst on record over the Bering Sea and the west coast," NWS forecasters said in a bulletin Monday afternoon.

The storm was about 600 miles southwest of Shemya in the far western Aleutian Islands on Monday afternoon and was expected to move over the Bering Sea toward Alaska's west coast on Tuesday.

Winds near hurricane force of 74 mph were expected to generate seas as high as 25 feet in the northern Bering Sea, forecasters said. The winds were expected to raise sea levels as much as 9 feet in the Norton Sound. Those levels combined with the high waves were expected to cause significant coastal erosion and major flooding. The winds may also push sea ice on shore, adding to the dangers, NWS forecasters said.

Alaska's west coast could also see as much as 14 inches of snow in blizzard conditions, forecasters said. The storm was expected to last into Wednesday.

Fine let just continue to increase all of our electricity cost, your fuel cost, your food cost, and send it to the Chicago climate traders and line the pockets of a few well connected idiots who will demand more and more and more. While china continues to pump more pollution into the atmosphere manufacturing the items we used to manufacture because of lower cost of doing business. Then as the wind blows the China produced pollution particulates into our communities our overpaid idiots in DC can require even more stringent regulations your employer has to over come. Will your job be safe?

wow the comments just prove that there are alot of paid sock puppets and really stupid people. Even the Koch Brothers paid stooge (University of California-Berkeley physicist Richard Muller) finally admitted global warming is real.!?via=siderec In the press release announcing the results, Muller said, "Our biggest surprise was that the new results agreed so closely with the warming values published previously by other teams in the US and the UK."

Stationed on Shemya, AK '74-75, and I have the greatest respect for these unpredictable storms. An experience long remembered also with an 8.1 earthquake there in Feb. -75., not with any storm as predicted now.

25foot seas? I've been out in the Bering, and 40mph will get you seas of 25ft. 75mph and you'll be on the worst and most dangerous roller coaster of your life.

WHO is it that sits around and creates this CRAZY DRAMA and sells it as actual ""news"". The "worst storm ever" described in this msm fairytale is a LAUGH. Out Loud if you choose. Alaska experiences weather events along the coastal areas that typically sustained winds of 70-80 mph with gusts of 90-100. And YES it does SNOW from time to time in Alaska. You msm DRAMA QUEENS really need to find something USEFUL to do with your wasteland of time.

What a beautiful state. And its hard to believe that Alaska is almost half the size of the main land of the United States.I think Russia blew it when they sold Alaska to the US especially with all the resources and naturak gas being produced today. Beautiful country!
