Alaska faces one of its worst storms ever, forecasters say

Alaska is facing a life threatening winter storm with near hurricane force winds, more than a foot of snow and severe coastal flooding, the National Weather Service says.

"This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening storm which will be one of the worst on record over the Bering Sea and the west coast," NWS forecasters said in a bulletin Monday afternoon.

The storm was about 600 miles southwest of Shemya in the far western Aleutian Islands on Monday afternoon and was expected to move over the Bering Sea toward Alaska's west coast on Tuesday.

Winds near hurricane force of 74 mph were expected to generate seas as high as 25 feet in the northern Bering Sea, forecasters said. The winds were expected to raise sea levels as much as 9 feet in the Norton Sound. Those levels combined with the high waves were expected to cause significant coastal erosion and major flooding. The winds may also push sea ice on shore, adding to the dangers, NWS forecasters said.

Alaska's west coast could also see as much as 14 inches of snow in blizzard conditions, forecasters said. The storm was expected to last into Wednesday.

The only 1st world country where the issue of climate change is a political issue is the US. Everywhere else it is an agreed fact. it is an agreed fact amongst 98% of refereed scientific paper by climatologists in the US as well,
Why the "confusion" in the US. Willful ignorance paid for by Big Energy and pushed by Fixed Noise and congresscritters on the take.

Our climate has been changing for millions of years. Thankfully, there is nothing man can ever do to change it, if Man could we would likely screw it up. We can't even protect our most precious gift in this Country.

Wait, what happened to 'Global Warming'? Your leaders told you to use the new term 'Climate Change' and you, lemming-like, follow orders.

      Intelligent, thinking people? Hahaha.

There has been no disagreement among researchers and scientists that the earth's climate is in a state of ongoing change, nor have any parties – skeptics included – ever suggested we haven't experienced a lengthy warming trend. I doubt you will find any scientist either here or abroad who is in doubt of either of these points.

The discussion centers instead on a premise that these changes are, first, man-made and, second, that rising levels of carbon dioxide are the primary agent. On neither of these questions can it be said the science is settled, or that the greatest number of researchers has taken up one side or the other. It's a continuous process of postulate, research and review – which is to say it hasn't and won't achieve a final status any time soon.

Skepticism is the engine of science. The idea of some position having become widely accepted by the public is not at all unusual, but any suggestion that scientists – apart from some benighted minority – have settled some question forever is simply and entirely foreign to science itself.

"an agreed fact." Exactly, you have all agreed to lie about the fact that weather changes. All day, every day, every year, for all of existance. Instead you want to blame it on me. It 's not you it's someone else.

Stop drinking the Kool-Aid and you will get well eventually.

@John - Actually, the reason it changed from "Global Warming" to "Climate Change" is because people like you evidently couldn't read beyond those two words to fully understand the theory. "Global Warming" has, since its first introduction to the mainstream in the early 80s, always called initially for a period of more extreme weather - both heat AND cold - ultimately resulting in increased temperatures across the globe.

Sir, please do yourself a favor and get some education about the climate, try out and get some real scientific information about the climate. To follow blindly what the scientific / political group is saying is not good for you to follow blindly. Please educate yourself before you stake out a position.

To look at this storm as an example of "climate change" all you are doing is discrediting yourself. This storm is an average winter storm for the Bering. If climate change is going to cause average weather then we'll be OK. So if you think your informed and think this storm is a really be deal your not well informed.

Just in case you wondering if it really is a severe storm, it definitely is. Take a look at that map and the lows around is above 1000 mb the other one is at 992 mb. A storm with a low of that depth is an extra tropical system with almost hurricane like abilities.........really this article should read that Alaska is faced with a near hurricane. If that doesn't sound ridiculous to you please take into account the fact that the major reason that hurricanes form in the Atlantic is because of great conditions and extremely warm waters. This storm has formed without the benefit of such things...a very remarkable storm. I hope everyone stays safe.

Those isobars look real scary. Here in New England we get similar storms in the winter. The NWS needs a new term to call these Cat one cold hurricanes. We call them Notheasters, but that name does not do it justice. Hurricane force winds, storm surge and two feet of snow is in a category by itself.

AJ, Good point. In checking the NOAA website they are predicting winds to 80 MPH seas to 40 feet! It would be incredible to see four story high waves, but not fun to be on them!

The Lows that you are referrencing are not significantly intense, and are actually one system. It has two lows due to it being a "double-barrel" occluded it's downstream. The system this article is referring to is the Low located in the Bering Sea (between Russia and Alaska). It's current Low center of 949mb is somewhat stronger than most hurricanes that make landfall in the U.S. You are right in the fact that it is an impressive storm. I'm currently in Afghanistan and wish we had a system like this pushing through. Kind regards, and have a burger with a beer on my behalf. Cheers!

A winter storm of this in the Bering is only an average sized storm. I've sailed in worse in the Bering, I think its silly when there is new report like this and everyone that reads it thinks this storm is something special. And Scotty 40 foot seas are fun, I have friends underway in the Bering now and their pumped up and loving it, well the ones that don't get sea sick.

Thank you AJ. I live in the Norton Sound, this is such a terrible storm. It is the worst we Alaskans have seen in 30 years. Expected power outages. School has already been cancelled today. This is serious bussiness, life-threatening. The stores have been packed for the past day assembling kits for this. Winds are howling, and the excitement is running through the town preparing.

Lower atmosphere is hotter (causing bigger clouds and more of them) while upper atmosphere is colder (thinner ozone layer caused by manmade pollution). Might be a factor in this massive storm. In my opinion, the conservative think tanks' promotion of misinformation about climate change is a crime against mankind. In every other country other than the USA, the debate is over and the climate scientists have won and people are cutting far back on fossil fuel consumption.

    November 8, 2011 at 8:55 am | Report abuse |
    • John

China is one of the biggest users of fossil fuels and no they have not cut back on its use. Where do you get your information? This is mainly a US trumped up creation. You think big oil manipulates facts. Just look at the Green initiative.
They are doing exactly like big oil trying to manipulate facts for their own gain. Its no different. Don't think any country can just walk away from fossil fuels and don't think its going to dramatically change our weather. You would be wrong on both.
Weather changes no matter how they are affected happen over decades and centuries and even if fossil fuels are affecting it. It would take very much the same amount of time to even begin to reduce these effects if indeed they are being affected by the burning of fossil fuels.

ALL other countries are reducing fossil fuel consumption??? I wonder why China, India and Brasil were specifically excluded form the Kyoto Protocol? Could it be that as recently as 3-4 years ago, China and India were together bringing a new coal power plant on-line every 10 days?
A few millenia ago, the Earth cooled and ice covered the land. Then (without the benefit of SUVs and power plants) the Earth warmed and the ice retreated. The Earth's climate is not a constant system. Is the climate changing? Yes – because it always has done so.

So what happened to global warming?

      November 8, 2011 at 4:27 pm | Report abuse |

The official position of the World Natural Health Organization in regards to global warming is that there is NO GLOBAL WARMING! Global warming is nothing more than just another hoax, just like Y2K and the global freezing claims in the 1960's and 70's were. Global warming is being used to generate fear and panic. Those behind this movement are using it to control people's lives and for financial gain.

There are not many individuals, groups, or organizations willing to stand up against this fraud that is being perpetuated for fear of being persecuted, harassed, and ostracized by those who support global warming within the scientific and other communities. But fortunately, a few have decided to do the right thing and take a stand against this evil, proving just how unscientifically founded global warming is and exposing those who are behind it. Below, you will find links to information and articles showing the proof that global warming is nothing more than just a bunch of hot air (pun intended).

More at the first link above.

Global warming is a sham, the scientests that discovered it were exposed as using false science. Polar bears are not going extinct, there are way more of them according to the real numbers than they talk about publicly. The climate changes twice a year, we used to call it spring and fall. I used to be an avionics tech in Galeena and a storm almost blew the whole river across our runway – about 12 feet of ice that took three days for a caterpiller to clear. This was in 1978. Storms happen. The earth changes. Man can't change those last two facts. Get a job.

The Berkley Earth Surface Temperature Study (BEST) just completed analyzed 2% of 1.6 billion temperature recordings from around the world and determined that Global Warming is real but stopped 13 years ago. This is at a time that CO2 levels are spiking. This flys in the face of the Man-made global warming crowds theory that it is the result of "greenhouse gas" production. Facts are hard things for the liberals to deal with.
