Alaska faces one of its worst storms ever, forecasters say

Alaska is facing a life threatening winter storm with near hurricane force winds, more than a foot of snow and severe coastal flooding, the National Weather Service says.

"This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening storm which will be one of the worst on record over the Bering Sea and the west coast," NWS forecasters said in a bulletin Monday afternoon.

The storm was about 600 miles southwest of Shemya in the far western Aleutian Islands on Monday afternoon and was expected to move over the Bering Sea toward Alaska's west coast on Tuesday.

Winds near hurricane force of 74 mph were expected to generate seas as high as 25 feet in the northern Bering Sea, forecasters said. The winds were expected to raise sea levels as much as 9 feet in the Norton Sound. Those levels combined with the high waves were expected to cause significant coastal erosion and major flooding. The winds may also push sea ice on shore, adding to the dangers, NWS forecasters said.

Alaska's west coast could also see as much as 14 inches of snow in blizzard conditions, forecasters said. The storm was expected to last into Wednesday.

It's wacko/s like you that have no idea what makes and controls weather. The hype that Gore and the other Global warming idiots was for only one purpose to throw terror into the ill informed minds and cause major buying of their products to stuff their pockets with green. One Volcanic eruption puts out more carbon emmisions, dioxsides and other materials into the atmosphere than man has created since he set foot on the earth, do get informed before you play chicken little. Google up John Coleman Global warming and listen to the presentations from a person that actually knows Climatology.

Hi. My name is Stanton and I want to go back to the caveman days. Let's get rid of every internal combustion engine and heating device and electrically powered item and live under reindeer skins. Then we won't need companies and jobs and won't need government and won't need to pay taxes. Then everyone will be poor and equal. Just like in the old USSR. Oh, wait...they were all equal but their life sucked, and they did have electricity and jobs and govt. Oh, never mind.

Uh....... Don't know what your mental state is right now man. But everything will be OK. Sarah Palin is from Alaska. I'm sure she has a plan to deal with the weather. Think about it... She's protected us from those damn Canadians and Russians in the past. So dealing with a storm should be a walk in the park. All will be fine....

I agree with stanton...I find it funny how uninformed and uneducated most people are regarding the weather and climate change. 99% of scientists from all over the world agree the global warming is happening...oh wait, but I guess they all don't know what they're talking about. If you don't believe global warming is happening and is not man made, then perhaps you need to look at the evidence. You know, the satellite imagery of the disappearing ice shelves, the amount of CO2 levels...the evidence is there...but yeah, go ahead...keep turning the other's people that turn the other way who will be regretting it most.

Wow...I just read a few more comments; you can really see the level of education some of these people making comments have. Some of these comments actually sound like they were written by 1st graders! What's even funnier is that today's youth (children and all) probably understand better what's going on than some of the uneducated people commenting. Sad!

Joe Smoe, I'm not trying to offend's just sad that no one takes the time to even look at the facts behind it. Okay, so we may not know for sure what is happening, but can you honestly say that we're not contributing to it at all?

Its only an average storm, to point to it as an example of "climate change" you are discrediting yourself. If climate change is going to plague the earth with average weather I think we'll be OK.

I live in remote NE Arizona near the Four Corners Area. 26 million years ago this region was Tropical Forests. It's hot here in the summer and cold in the winter and mostly high country desert. Global Warming believers can think about that Truth for a few minutes and then stick their "Global Warming Caused By Man Theory" up their collect bung holes! And Mr. Horowitz, you sir are a Moron!

I don't know, they're pretty threatened by the changes now. My concern is that they will be forced to be among human population instead of being on their own little ice patch away from people. They're cute but extremely dangerous. I wouldn't want them killed just because they end up visiting your backyard because of the climate change.

The earth is in constant change with or withour Mankind doing anything. Any scientist will tell you that. However, only the radical socialist wealth-redistributors will claim Man is causing "climate change" which BTW, used to be known as "global warming" . Now that "global warming" has been ridiculed and debunked as BS, they renamed it "climate change". Either way, the world DOES NOT revolve around only Man and never will. But while we are here, just enjoy life as it is and stop trying to make it something else. There have untold number of warming and cooling periods over the life of earth, yet life still goes on. Read a science book or National Geographic (Oct 2011 is a good start). Millions of years ago the N & S poles were hot with NO ice. Yet here we are. 10,000 years ago the last Ice Age ended. Yet here we are. If climate change forces Mankind to change, so be it. I don't want to see all of America's wealth being redistributed to "poor" countries and scammed and stolen in the name of "protecting the earth from climate change." You can't change the weather and you can't turn lead into gold. And you cannot stop "climate change". Neither could the dinsoaurs. Get over your pompous selves.

The U.S., China and Russia all have the technology to control the weather: its called HAARP. These are freak storms for a SPECIFIC political reason. Either China or Russia (possibly even Iran) have done this to gain more power in the world. All of the major global military powers are jockeying for position in the new world order. These storms will continue and only get worse.

I see CNN still appeals to mostly left wing fanatics. The last time I watched CNN was at the airport. I had no choice but I must admit that I did find it interesting. It was like entering the mind of the ex USSR or Chinese propaganda minister. A paralel universe of sorts where people believe in all kinds of fanciful fans like man made global warming, forced abortion, and the sacred right of all people to be taken care of by their government from craddle to grave, to name a few. Oh, yes, I cannot forget the bogeyman, dressed as a conservative white male spitting poison like a cobra. I must return to the airport again one day to view this spectacle. It was so much fun.
