Alaska faces one of its worst storms ever, forecasters say

Alaska is facing a life threatening winter storm with near hurricane force winds, more than a foot of snow and severe coastal flooding, the National Weather Service says.

"This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening storm which will be one of the worst on record over the Bering Sea and the west coast," NWS forecasters said in a bulletin Monday afternoon.

The storm was about 600 miles southwest of Shemya in the far western Aleutian Islands on Monday afternoon and was expected to move over the Bering Sea toward Alaska's west coast on Tuesday.

Winds near hurricane force of 74 mph were expected to generate seas as high as 25 feet in the northern Bering Sea, forecasters said. The winds were expected to raise sea levels as much as 9 feet in the Norton Sound. Those levels combined with the high waves were expected to cause significant coastal erosion and major flooding. The winds may also push sea ice on shore, adding to the dangers, NWS forecasters said.

Alaska's west coast could also see as much as 14 inches of snow in blizzard conditions, forecasters said. The storm was expected to last into Wednesday.

For the natives up there, it's just another storm. I lived in Alaska for 6 years in the 70's; I went through storms like those. But now having said that, however, there is a problem with Arctic weather-temperatures are warming up, the ice cap in Greenland is melting, the permafrost is thawing out-and countries are starting to fight over new waterways being created by the warming weather. There used to be a 6 week window for ships to get in and out of the North Slope area during the summer before the ocean iced over. What do you mean there's no climate change? Wake up!!!

Global warming is a fact. The ozone layer is being punctured because of worldwide use of CFC's. The deforestation of the Amazon jungle is the main culprit for the greenhouse effect, and now the emerging countries of Asia are starting to chime in with their material waste. It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature, because she will exact her corrections on all of us. The "save the planet" mantra of the green movement is a money-making farce. You want to save the planet, don't drive cars, don't use air conditioners, and live without electricity. Since that will never happen, quit the hypocritical comments. Oh, BTW, this is just another typical Alaskan storm.

Not only is the deforestation of the rain forest a giant culprit, but also how many planes need to go from NYC to LA every hour? People travel too much, unnecessarily, for frivolous reasons.

      Global Warming !!!!!!! Blah, Blah,

Let me see, it's Nov. 8th, and Alaska is expecting a dangerous winter storm. Because of Global Warming? So it's unusual early season winter storms? It's global warming. Unusual warm winter weather? It's global warming. How convenient.

Um, warming is a fact. It's caused by the SUN. It's just a cycle. A cycle that is longer than our life time.
Dont' get your panties in a wad. What goes up, must come down and up and down and up and down.

Vietvet6869: Which side did you fight on? Let me guess- you worked in the motor pool mounting tires on Jeeps in Tokyo. Phoney POS. Love the attacks on the Tea Party and republicans. Proving you're a moron does not make Obama and the leftist democrats any less the losers and Marxists they are nor their policies any less of failures. Prepare to be further squashed in November 2012.
