Alaska faces one of its worst storms ever, forecasters say

Alaska is facing a life threatening winter storm with near hurricane force winds, more than a foot of snow and severe coastal flooding, the National Weather Service says.

"This is an extremely dangerous and life-threatening storm which will be one of the worst on record over the Bering Sea and the west coast," NWS forecasters said in a bulletin Monday afternoon.

The storm was about 600 miles southwest of Shemya in the far western Aleutian Islands on Monday afternoon and was expected to move over the Bering Sea toward Alaska's west coast on Tuesday.

Winds near hurricane force of 74 mph were expected to generate seas as high as 25 feet in the northern Bering Sea, forecasters said. The winds were expected to raise sea levels as much as 9 feet in the Norton Sound. Those levels combined with the high waves were expected to cause significant coastal erosion and major flooding. The winds may also push sea ice on shore, adding to the dangers, NWS forecasters said.

Alaska's west coast could also see as much as 14 inches of snow in blizzard conditions, forecasters said. The storm was expected to last into Wednesday.

Geez! It is nearly winter and Alaska is going to get a storm. Why does this seems to be getting much attention? Our news media will do anything to run a stupid story. Damned it, it's winter and we get storms in winter. Watch this storm fizzle out.

This hasn't been plastered all the national news. However, it is a story and people need to be aware. I think your overemphasizing in your comment.

@Paul – Hey, I have heard that Alaskan's are a hardy lot and according to Sarah Palin, don't need help from anybody, particularly the Federal Government. I think we should shut down NOAA, they are a Federal Agency you know, up there and let you all sort it out.

So, if it is so friggin' dangerous, then WAIT OUT THE STORM, knucklehead!

BoomerSooner – Oklahoma does not have 80 mph winds all the time. Maybe temporarily as fronts move through. Try 70+ mph sustained winds like we get here. And it doesn't say the worst storm ever.

IGee, there's going to be snow and storms in Alaska. In other earth-shattering front page news, Florida is hot in the summer. More at 11.

yeah, and there are hurricanes in the south, so, I don't think anyone needs to hear about one of those hitting next hurricane season. Oh, and tornadoes in the midwest, please stop reporting on those. If this system hits it's going to be more than a little "snow and ice" genius.

@Sammie Jo – If you don't think Sarah Palin is not attempting to influence the election, you are truly ignorant.

Again, let's close the Coast Guard up in Alaska because it is Federal Agency and according to her Sarahness, they don't need the big, bad, Ried, Pelosi, Obama government. Horrors!

Is that what she really said or are you making that up? Hmmm, a quick little search and tada...yes, you making it up or what I call lying. Nice work boy.

Not everyone in Alaska agrees with her opinions. We would need the Coast Guard as much as you need your welfare.

@am I'm here too – Actually, I pay more in taxes than most people earn annually so before you start talking about welfare, it is my tax dollars that pay for those services that save your State's sorry behind. And last I checked, you guys get checks from a trust fund. Give it it rest and face reality. And FYI, I work about 80 hours a week. What do yiou do?

we get dividends once a year from the interest made on oil revenues of which we, too have to pay taxes on, but, I'm not sure where you're going with that. It's not like we are dependent on that income. Sometimes that number is higher, sometimes it's lower. Yes, it's a nice little "boost" but, once again, not sure what your point is. Secondly, rest assured, that the State of Alaska does not depend on YOUR tax dollars to keep us going. Glad to know you're working hard, but, YOU don't "save our sorry state" as you put it. There are plenty of hard working Alaskans that do that without your help, but thanks.

Slightly off topic but just wanted to remind all you baggers and birthers out there that autographed copies of Sarah Palin's famous "crosshairs" poster are now on sale at Walmart gun and knife departments everywhere.

that stinks for those on the west side of the state. Hope they are prepared. Now, for the rest of you. You have no clue as you sit in your cozy little homes in the "lower 48" spouting off STUPID insults at Sarah Palin who has nothing to do with anything. SHUT UP already. You guys all care a lot more about her down there then we do up here, give it a freaking break already. NONE of you would survive living 5 minutes up here, let alone in one of the villages that is going to be affected by this storm. I can guarantee if this storm hits, it won't shut one thing down up here, meanwhile you guys would be shut down for days if the same thing happened in your area. A blizzard is nothing we can't handle.

I beg to differ with you, oh vainglorious one. I live in northern MN and if I can manage here I can certainly manage in Alaska.
As far as your former half-governor is concerned, most of us in the lower 48 could give a tinker's damn about her.

Tim, you must be thinking of the southern part of Alaska... Much mor eSouthern than most Alaskans live. Check your weather forecast again, Michigan has not got weather anywhere close to the northern parts. And most people from the lower 48 that I talk to – Palin is stil la big deal to them, regardless of how long it's been since she was governer.

I lived in ND for several years and MN and those northern states have nothing on Alaska, so, you can think again. When you guys have to close down EVERYTHING because of 4 inches of snow....well, then, I think you may have an issue living in Alaska. And, as far as Palin goes, if she is nothing, why do we keep hearing about her? Y'all sure like to bring her up .....A LOT. The only news she makes in Alaska is from big news sources like this one. UGH.

Well said! As a Native from one of the villages on the Being Strait, we will survive! We are all happy Sarah left our state and went to AZ where they should be worried! This is just another storm we will ride out. If this was else where in the US it would be big news, maybe even bigger, but to us its normal. Just as you said, I'd like to see 'outsiders' come to our region and try to live it out...hahahha!
